    New Evidence on Regucalcin, Body Composition, and Walking Ability Adaptations to Multicomponent Exercise Training in Functionally Limited and Frail Older Adults

    Background: Regucalcin, or senescence marker protein-30 (SMP30), is a Ca2+-binding protein with multiple functions reported in the literature. Physical exercise has been shown to improve aging markers; nevertheless, SMP30 in humans has not been extensively researched. Older adults experience a decline in functional capacity and body composition. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a multicomponent training (MCT) program on SMP30 and its regulation of walking ability and body composition in functionally limited, frail, and pre-frail older adults. Methods: A total of 34 older adults (aged 80.3 +/- 6.1 years) were divided into an intervention group (IG = 20) and control group (CG = 14). The IG performed a supervised MCT (strength, endurance, balance, coordination, and flexibility) program for 6 months, 3 days per week, whereas the CG continued their normal lives without any specific physical training. SMP30 was analyzed in plasma after 3 and 6 months of MCT, while some physical fitness variables (Timed Up and Go (TUG) and 6-min walk test (6MWT)) and body composition (fat mass and lean mass) were measured at baseline, as well as after 3 months and 6 months of MCT. Results: No significant changes were observed in SPM30 between the IG (877.5 a.u. to 940.5 a.u., respectively) and CG (790.4 a.u. to 763.8 a.u., respectively). Moreover, no SMP30 differences were found between groups after 3 and 6 months of MCT. The IG improved significantly in the 6MWT after 3 months (472.2 +/- 84.2 m) compared to baseline (411.2 +/- 75.2 m). The IG also significantly enhanced their TUG performance after 3 months (7.6 +/- 1.6 s) and 6 months (7.3 +/- 1.8 s) of training compared to baseline (9.3 +/- 3.2 s) (all, p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in body composition between the IG and CG through the 6 months of MCT. Conclusions: The present study suggests that MCT did not change SMP30 levels from 3 to 6 months, where there were changes in neither walking ability nor body composition; however, MCT was effective in improving 6MWT and TUG performance from baseline to 3 months

    The OTELO survey: A case study of [O III] lambda 4959,5007 emitters at z=0.83

    Context. The OSIRIS Tunable Filter Emission Line Object (OTELO) survey is a very deep, blind exploration of a selected region of the Extended Groth Strip and is designed for finding emission-line sources (ELSs). The survey design, observations, data reduction, astrometry, and photometry, as well as the correlation with ancillary data used to obtain a final catalogue, including photo-z estimates and a preliminary selection of ELS, were described in a previous contribution. Aims. Here, we aim to determine the main properties and luminosity function (LF) of the [O III] ELS sample of OTELO as a scientific demonstration of its capabilities, advantages, and complementarity with respect to other surveys. Methods. The selection and analysis procedures of ELS candidates obtained using tunable filter pseudo-spectra are described. We performed simulations in the parameter space of the survey to obtain emission-line detection probabilities. Relevant characteristics of [O III] emitters and the LF ([O III]), including the main selection biases and uncertainties, are presented. Results. From 541 preliminary emission-line source candidates selected around z = 0.8, a total of 184 sources were confirmed as [O III] emitters. Consistent with simulations, the minimum detectable line flux and equivalent width in this ELS sample are ∼5 × 10−19 erg s−1 cm2 and ∼6 Å, respectively. We are able to constrain the faint-end slope (α = −1.03 ± 0.08) of the observed LF ([O III]) at a mean redshift of z = 0.83. This LF reaches values that are approximately ten times lower than those from other surveys. The vast majority (84%) of the morphologically classified [O III] ELSs are disc-like sources, and 87% of this sample is comprised of galaxies with stellar masses of M⋆ <  1010 M⊙

    Detection of a Corrugated Velocity Pattern in the Spiral Galaxy NGC 5427

    Here we report the detection, in Halpha emission, of a radial corrugation in the velocity field of the spiral galaxy NGC 5427. The central velocity of the Halpha line displays coherent, wavy-like variations in the vicinity of the spiral arms. The spectra along three different arm segments show that the maximum amplitude of the sinusoidal line variations are displaced some 500 pc from the central part of the spiral arms. The peak blueshifted velocities appear some 500 pc upstream the arm, whereas the peak redshifted velocities are located some 500 pc downstream the arm. This kinematical behavior is similar to the one expected in a galactic bore generated by the interaction of a spiral density wave with a thick gaseous disk, as recently modeled by Martos & Cox (1998).Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Power device losses in two-level converters with direct current controllers for grid connected applications

    Direct current controllers have been widely used in grid-tied applications and electric drives. Direct controllers select the switching states of the converter without the intervention of a modulation stage. In comparison with PWM based controllers, direct controllers have a faster dynamic response to reference-tracking and disturbance rejection. The different control strategies can affect the total converter losses and device loss distribution; hence it is important to evaluate them when novel control methodologies are presented and compare them to the conventional PWM current controllers. To this end, fully electrothermal simulations can be paramount. Using a grid connected two-level converter, this paper evaluates the power device losses and the resulting junction temperatures excursions of the power semiconductors chips when a direct current controller is used and compares the results to those obtained with PWM controllers working at the same operating points

    High Prevalence of Systemic Autoimmune Diseases in Patients with Menière's Disease

    BACKGROUND: Autoimmunity appears to be associated with the pathophysiology of Meniere's disease (MD), an inner ear disorder characterized by episodes of vertigo associated with hearing loss and tinnitus. However, the prevalence of autoimmune diseases (AD) in patients with MD has not been studied in individuals with uni or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). METHODS AND FINDINGS: We estimated the prevalence of AD in 690 outpatients with MD with uni or bilateral SNHL from otoneurology clinics at six tertiary referral hospitals by using clinica criteria and an immune panel (lymphocyte populations, antinuclear antibodies, C3, C4 and proinflammatory cytokines TNFα, INFγ). The observed prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) was higher than expected for the general population (1.39 for RA, 0.87 for SLE and 0.70 for AS, respectively). Systemic AD were more frequently observed in patients with MD and diagnostic criteria for migraine than cases with MD and tension-type headache (p = 0.007). There were clinical differences between patients with uni or bilateral SNHL, but no differences were found in the immune profile. Multiple linear regression showed that changes in lymphocytes subpopulations were associated with hearing loss and persistence of vertigo, suggesting a role for the immune response in MD. CONCLUSIONS: Despite some limitations, MD displays an elevated prevalence of systemic AD such as RA, SLE and AS. This finding, which suggests an autoimmune background in a subset of patients with MD, has important implications for the treatment of MD

    Accuracy and Precision of the COSMED K5 Portable Analyser

    The main aims of this study were to determine the accuracy of the portable metabolic cart K5 by comparison with a stationary metabolic cart (Vyntus CPX), to check on the validity of Vyntus CPX using a butane combustion test, and to assess the reliability of K5 during prolonged walks in the field. For validation, measurements were consecutively performed tests with both devices at rest and during submaximal exercise (bicycling) at low (60 W) and moderate intensities (130–160 W) in 16 volunteers. For the reliability study, 14 subjects were measured two times during prolonged walks (13 km, at 5 km/h), with the K5 set in mixing chamber (Mix) mode. Vyntus measured the stoichiometric RQ of butane combustion with high accuracy (error &lt;1.6%) and precision (CV &lt;0.5%), at VO2 values between 0.788 and 6.395 L/min. At rest and 60 W, there was good agreement between Vyntus and K5 (breath-by-breath, B×B) in VO2, VCO2, RER, and energy expenditure, while in Mix mode the K5 overestimated VO2 by 13.4 and 5.8%, respectively. Compared to Vyntus, at moderate intensity the K5 in B×B mode underestimated VO2, VCO2, and energy expenditure by 6.6, 6.9, and 6.6%, respectively. However, at this intensity there was an excellent agreement between methods in RER and fat oxidation. In Mix mode, K5 overestimated VO2 by 5.8 and 4.8%, at 60 W and the higher intensity, respectively. The K5 had excellent reliability during the field tests. Total energy expenditure per Km was determined with a CV for repeated measurements of 4.5% (CI: 3.2–6.9%) and a concordance correlation coefficient of 0.91, similar to the variability in VO2. This high reproducibility was explained by the low variation of FEO2 measurements, which had a CV of 0.9% (CI: 0.7–1.5%) combined with a slightly greater variability of FECO2, VE, VCO2, and RER. In conclusion, the K5 is an excellent portable metabolic cart which is almost as accurate as a state-of-art stationary metabolic cart, capable of measuring precisely energy expenditure in the field, showing a reliable performance during more than 2 h of continuous work.
