Confinement in a Double Barrier Structure in the Presence of an Electric Field
The effect of electric field on the electron resonant tunnelling into a
double barrier structure is studied. We show for particular field strengths an
increase of the tunnelling time which leads us to explain the Stark-ladder
localization and Bloch oscillations in superlattices and to discuss the

No surviving evolved companions to the progenitor of supernova SN 1006
Type Ia supernovae are thought to occur as a white dwarf made of carbon and
oxygen accretes sufficient mass to trigger a thermonuclear explosion. The
accretion could occur slowly from an unevolved (main-sequence) or evolved
(subgiant or giant) star, that being dubbed the single-degenerate
channel, or rapidly as it breaks up a smaller orbiting white dwarf (the double-
degenerate channel). Obviously, a companion will survive the explosion
only in the single-degenerate channel. Both channels might contribute to
the production of type Ia supernovae but their relative proportions
still remain a fundamental puzzle in astronomy. Previous searches for remnant
companions have revealed one possible case for SN 1572, though that has
been criticized. More recently, observations have restricted surviving
companions to be small, main-sequence stars, ruling out giant
companions, though still allowing the single-degenerate channel. Here we report
the result of a search for surviving companions to the progenitor of SN
1006. None of the stars within 4' of the apparent site of the explosion
is associated with the supernova remnant, so we can firmly exclude all giant
and subgiant companions to the progenitor. Combined with the previous results,
less than 20 per cent of type Iae occur through the single degenerate channel.Comment: Published as a letter in Nature (2012 September 27
No surviving companion in Kepler's supernova
We have surveyed Kepler's supernova remnant in search of the companion star
of the explosion. We have gone as deep as 2.6 solar luminosities in the stars
within 20% of the radius of the remnant. We use FLAMES at the VLT-UT2 telescope
to obtain high resolution spectra of the stellar candidates selected from HST
images. The resulting set of stellar parameters suggests that these stars come
from a rather ordinary mixture of field stars (mostly giants). A few of the
stars seem to have low [Fe/H] (< -1) and they are consistent with being
metal-poor giants. The radial velocities and rotational velocities vrot sin i
are very well determined. There are no fast rotating stars as vrot sin i < 20
km/s. The radial velocities from the spectra and the proper motions determined
from HST images are compatible with those expected from the Besan\c{c}on model
of the Galaxy. The strong limits placed on luminosity suggest that this
supernova could have arisen either from the core-degenerate scenario or from

Functional, genetic and bioinformatic characterization of a calcium/calmodulin kinase gene in Sporothrix schenckii
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Sporothrix schenckii </it>is a pathogenic, dimorphic fungus, the etiological agent of sporotrichosis, a subcutaneous lymphatic mycosis. Dimorphism in <it>S. schenckii </it>responds to second messengers such as cAMP and calcium, suggesting the possible involvement of a calcium/calmodulin kinase in its regulation. In this study we describe a novel calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase gene in <it>S. schenckii, sscmk1</it>, and the effects of inhibitors of calmodulin and calcium/calmodulin kinases on the yeast to mycelium transition and the yeast cell cycle.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using the PCR homology approach a new member of the calcium/calmodulin kinase family, SSCMK1, was identified in this fungus. The cDNA sequence of <it>sscmk1 </it>revealed an open reading frame of 1,221 nucleotides encoding a 407 amino acid protein with a predicted molecular weight of 45.6 kDa. The genomic sequence of <it>sscmk1 </it>revealed the same ORF interrupted by five introns. Bioinformatic analyses of SSCMK1 showed that this protein had the distinctive features that characterize a calcium/calmodulin protein kinase: a serine/threonine protein kinase domain and a calmodulin-binding domain. When compared to homologues from seven species of filamentous fungi, SSCMK1 showed substantial similarities, except for a large and highly variable region that encompasses positions 330 – 380 of the multiple sequence alignment. Inhibition studies using calmodulin inhibitor W-7, and calcium/calmodulin kinase inhibitors, KN-62 and lavendustin C, were found to inhibit budding by cells induced to re-enter the yeast cell cycle and to favor the yeast to mycelium transition.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study constitutes the first evidence of the presence of a calcium/calmodulin kinase-encoding gene in <it>S. schenckii </it>and its possible involvement as an effector of dimorphism in this fungus. These results suggest that a calcium/calmodulin dependent signaling pathway could be involved in the regulation of dimorphism in this fungus. The results suggest that the calcium/calmodulin kinases of yeasts are evolutionarily distinct from those in filamentous fungi.</p

Improved Performance of an Epoxy Matrix as a Result of Combining Graphene Oxide and Reduced Graphene
We present an easy and effective way to improve the mechanical properties of an epoxy matrix by reinforcing it with a combination of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). These nanocomposites were prepared with different load of nanofillers: 0.1, 0.4, 0.7, 1.0 wt% and a neat epoxy. Ratios of graphene oxide and reduced graphene (GO : RGO) employed were: 0 : 1, 0.25 : 0.75, 0.5 : 0.5, 0.75 : 0.25, and 1 : 0. Results show that with only 0.4 wt% and a ratio 0.2 : 0.75 of GO : RGO, tensile strength and tensile toughness are 52% and 152% higher than neat epoxy while modulus of elasticity was improved ~20%. The obtained results suggest that it is possible achieve advantageous properties by combining graphene in oxidized and reduced conditions as it shows a synergic effect by the presence of both nanofillers
Comparação da temperatura do ar obtida por estação meteorológica convencional e automática.
Este trabalho teve como objetivos comparar os dados da temperatura do ar (temperatura média e extrema), obtidos em uma Estação Meteorológica Convencional com os de uma Estação Meteorológica Automática, e avaliar as estimativas da temperatura média diária do ar por diferentes métodos. As estações meteorológicas estavam localizadas na Estação Agroclimatológica de Pelotas, Capão do Leão (31º52? S, 52º21? W e 13,2 m), Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. A série de cada elemento foi obtida simultaneamente na Estação Automática e na Estação Convencional durante o período de 22/12/2005 a 21/12/2006. Existe alta equivalência para as medidas das temperaturas extremas e das estimativas das temperaturas médias entre as Estações Meteorológicas Convencional e Automática, independente do método utilizado para o cálculo da temperatura média do ar. O termohigrógrafo mede, com alta precisão, as temperaturas extremas do ar. Verificam-se pequenas diferenças nos horários de ocorrência das temperaturas mínimas e máximas entre as Estações Meteorológicas Convencional e Automática. A análise dos dados indica que a substituição da Estação Meteorológica Convencional pela Estação Meteorológicas Automática, na região Sul do Rio Grande do Sul, não acarreta mudanças significativas na série de dados de temperatura do ar
Stellar Population gradients in galaxy discs from the CALIFA survey
While studies of gas-phase metallicity gradients in disc galaxies are common,
very little has been done in the acquisition of stellar abundance gradients in
the same regions. We present here a comparative study of the stellar
metallicity and age distributions in a sample of 62 nearly face-on, spiral
galaxies with and without bars, using data from the CALIFA survey. We measure
the slopes of the gradients and study their relation with other properties of
the galaxies. We find that the mean stellar age and metallicity gradients in
the disc are shallow and negative. Furthermore, when normalized to the
effective radius of the disc, the slope of the stellar population gradients
does not correlate with the mass or with the morphological type of the
galaxies. Contrary to this, the values of both age and metallicity at 2.5
scale-lengths correlate with the central velocity dispersion in a similar
manner to the central values of the bulges, although bulges show, on average,
older ages and higher metallicities than the discs. One of the goals of the
present paper is to test the theoretical prediction that non-linear coupling
between the bar and the spiral arms is an efficient mechanism for producing
radial migrations across significant distances within discs. The process of
radial migration should flatten the stellar metallicity gradient with time and,
therefore, we would expect flatter stellar metallicity gradients in barred
galaxies. However, we do not find any difference in the metallicity or age
gradients in galaxies with without bars. We discuss possible scenarios that can
