    Constructing topological models by symmetrization: A PEPS study

    Symmetrization of topologically ordered wavefunctions is a powerful method for constructing new topological models. Here, we study wavefunctions obtained by symmetrizing quantum double models of a group GG in the Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) formalism. We show that symmetrization naturally gives rise to a larger symmetry group G~\tilde G which is always non-abelian. We prove that by symmetrizing on sufficiently large blocks, one can always construct wavefunctions in the same phase as the double model of G~\tilde G. In order to understand the effect of symmetrization on smaller patches, we carry out numerical studies for the toric code model, where we find strong evidence that symmetrizing on individual spins gives rise to a critical model which is at the phase transitions of two inequivalent toric codes, obtained by anyon condensation from the double model of G~\tilde G.Comment: 10 pages. v2: accepted versio

    Editorial: Regulation of Pollen Tube Growth

    In angiosperms, the pollen tube is a simple system composed of the vegetative cell and the two sperm cells which, nevertheless, accomplishes a very important process, essential for the life of flowering plants on Earth, i.e., sexual reproduction. In its simplicity, the pollen tube allowed plants to reproduce on land, even in the absence of water. Therefore, it is a very critical evolutionary factor. In the last 30 years, the pollen tube has been the object of study for many researchers around the world because of a number of reasons; apart from its biological importance, the pollen tube is a highly valuable cell model by which to analyze many aspects of plant cell biology (except for photosynthesis). The time course of cell wall deposition, the role of calcium ions in driving the apical growth of pollen tube, the action of signal transduction intermediates, the cell-cell communication, the mechanism of cell shape control by exocytosis/endocytosis are just some of the aspects on which it is possible to find articles in the scientific literature dealing with the pollen tube. Not to forget that the study of pollen tubes also has practical implications because the control of the reproductive process of plants also involves the study of genes, proteins and metabolites that promote or prevent the growth of pollen tubes. Therefore, controlling pollen tube growth can impact seed and fruit yields. Due to all these considerations, the Research Topic “Regulation of pollen tube growth” was meant to highlight some of the above aspects with updated considerations and special focus. These include contributions related to human health, pollen-pistil interaction, the growth of pollen tubes by exocytosis/endocytosis, and the rejection of the pollen tube in self-incompatibility processe

    An equatorial ultra iron-poor star identified in BOSS

    We report the discovery of SDSS J131326.89-001941.4, an ultra iron-poor red giant star ([Fe/H] ~ -4.3) with a very high carbon abundance ([C/Fe]~ +2.5). This object is the fifth star in this rare class, and the combination of a fairly low effective temperature (Teff ~ 5300 K), which enhances line absorption, with its brightness (g=16.9), makes it possible to measure the abundances of calcium, carbon and iron using a low-resolution spectrum from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We examine the carbon and iron abundance ratios in this star and other similar objects in the light of predicted yields from metal-free massive stars, and conclude that they are consistent. By way of comparison, stars with similarly low iron abundances but lower carbon-to-iron ratios deviate from the theoretical predictions.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Deposition of SiNx : H thin films by the electron cyclotron resonance and its application to Al/SiNx : H/Si structures

    We have analyzed the electrical properties and bonding characteristics of SiNx:H thin films deposited at 200 degrees C by the electron cyclotron resonance plasma method. The films show the presence of hydrogen bonded to silicon (at the films with the ratio N/Si<1.33) or to nitrogen (for films where the ratio N/Si is higher than 1.33). In the films with the N/Si ratio of 1.38, the hydrogen content is 6 at. %. For compositions which are comprised of between N/Si=1.1 and 1.4, hydrogen concentration remains below 10 at. %. The films with N/Si=1.38 exhibited the better values of the electrical properties (resistivity, 6x10(13) Omega cm; and electric breakdown field, 3 MV/cm). We have used these films to make metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) devices on n-type silicon wafers. C-V measurements accomplished on the structures indicate that the interface trap density is kept in the range (3 - 5) x 10(11) cm(-2) eV(-1) for films with the N/Si ratio below 1.38. For films where the N/Si ratio is higher than 1.3, the trap density suddenly increases, following the same trend of the concentration of N-H bonds in the SiNx:H films. The results are explained on the basis of the model recently reported by Lucovsky [J. Vac. Sci. Technol. B 14, 2832 (1996)] for the electrical behavior of (oxide-nitride-oxide)/Si structures. The model is additionally supported by deep level transient spectroscopy measurements, that show the presence of silicon dangling bonds at the insulator/semiconductor interface (the so-called P-bN0 center), The concentration of these centers follows the same trend with the film composition of the interface trap density and, as a consequence, with the concentration of N-H bonds. This result further supports the N-H bonds located at the insulator/semiconductor interface which act as a precursor site to the defect generation of the type . Si=Si-3, i.e., the P-bN0 centers.     Caveolin-1 is a risk factor for postsurgery metastasis in preclinical melanoma models

    Melanomas are highly lethal skin tumours that are frequently treated by surgical resection. However, the efficacy of such procedures is often limited by tumour recurrence and metastasis. Caveolin-1 (CAV1) has been attributed roles as a tumour suppressor, although in late-stage tumours, its presence is associated with enhanced metastasis. The expression of this protein in human melanoma development and particularly how the presence of CAV1 affects metastasis after surgery has not been defined. CAV1 expression in human melanocytes and melanomas increases with disease progression and is highest in metastatic melanomas. The effect of increased CAV1 expression can then be evaluated using B16F10 murine melanoma cells injected into syngenic immunocompetent C57BL/6 mice or human A375 melanoma cells injected into immunodeficient B6Rag1−/− mice. Augmented CAV1 expression suppresses tumour formation upon a subcutaneous injection, but enhances lung metastasis of cells injected into the tail vein in both models. A procedure was initially developed using B16F10 melanoma cells in C57BL/6 mice to mimic better the situation in patients undergoing surgery. Subcutaneous tumours of a defined size were removed surgically and local tumour recurrence and lung metastasis were evaluated after another 14 days. In this postsurgery setting, CAV1 presence in B16F10 melanomas favoured metastasis to the lung, although tumour suppression at the initial site was still evident. Similar results were obtained when evaluating A375 cells in B6Rag1−/− mice. These results implicate CAV1 expression in melanomas as a marker of poor prognosis for patients undergoing surgery as CAV1 expression promotes experimental lung metastasis in two different preclinical models

    Human embryonic and neuronal stem cell markers in retinoblastoma

    Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common intraocular tumor of early childhood. The early onset of RB, coupled with our previous findings of cancer stem cell characteristics in RB, led us to hypothesize that subpopulations of RB tumors harbor markers and behaviors characteristic of embryonic and neuronal origin. Our RB sources included: human pathological tissues, and the human RB cell lines Y79 and WERI-RB27. Microarray screening, single and dual-label immunocytochemistry and RT-PCR were performed to detect embryonic and neuronal stem cell markers, such as Oct3/4, Nanog, CD133, and Musashi-1. To test for functional evidence of stem cell behavior, we examined RB cells for their ability to form neurospheres and retain BrdU label as indicators of self-renewal and slow cell cycling, respectively. Microarray comparisons of human RB tumors with normal retinal tissue detected upregulation of a number of genes involved in embryonic development that were also present in Y79 cells, including Oct3/4, Nanog, Musashi-1 and Musashi-2, prominin-1 (CD133), Jagged-2, Reelin, Thy-1, nestin, Meis-1,NCAM, Patched, and Notch4. Expression of Musashi-1, Oct3/4 and Nanog was confirmed by immunostaining and RT-PCR analyses of RB tumors and RB cell lines. CD133 expression was confirmed by PCR analysis. Y79 and WERI-RB27 contained populations of Hoechst-dim/ABCG2-positive cells that co-localized with embryonic stem cell markers Oct3/4-ABCG2 and Nanog-ABCG2. Subpopulations of Y79 and WERI-RB27 cells were label-retaining (as seen by BrdU incorporation) and were able to generate neurospheres, both hallmarks of a stem cell phenotype. Small subpopulation(s) of RB cells express human embryonic and neuronal stem cell markers. There are also subpopulations that demonstrate functional behavior (label retention and self-renewal) consistent with cancer stem cells. These findings support the hypothesis that RB is a heterogeneous tumor comprised of subpopulation(s) with stem cell-like properties

    Airborne Pollen, Allergens, and Proteins: A Comparative Study of Three Sampling Methods

    Nowadays, there is a wide range of different methods available for the monitoring of pollen and allergens, but their relative efficiency is sometimes unclear, as conventional pollen monitoring does not thoroughly describe pollen allergenicity. This study aims to evaluate airborne pollen, allergen, and protein levels, associating them with meteorological and chemical parameters. The sampling was performed in Bologna (Italy) during the grass flowering period, with three different devices: a Cyclone sampler (CS), a Dicothomous sampler (DS), and a Berner impactor (BI). Total proteins were extracted from aerosol samples, and grass allergens Phl p 1 and Phl p 5 were quantified by ELISA. Airborne Poaceae pollen concentrations were also evaluated, using a Hirst-type trap. Proteins and allergens collected by CS resulted about ten times higher than those collected by the other two instruments, possibly due to their different cut-offs, while DS and BI results appeared consistent only for the total proteins collected in the fine fraction (1.3 vs. 1.6 mu g/m(3)). Airborne proteins correlated neither with Poaceae pollen nor with its aeroallergens, while aeroallergens correlated with pollen only in the coarse particulate, indicating the presence of pollen-independent aeroallergens in the fine particulate, promoted by high wind speed

    New records of recently described chemosymbiotic bivalves for mud volcanoes within the European waters (Gulf of CĂĄdiz)

    Chemosymbiotic bivalves are important members of cold seep communities and information on their distribution in theEuropean waters is still quite scarce. This study reports the presence of living populations and shell remains of some recently described bivalves such as Lucinoma asapheus, Solemya elarraichensis and Acharax gadirae as well as Bathymodiolus sp. in the mud volcanoes of the Spanish Atlantic waters. Living populations of these species were thus far only found in Anastasya, Aveiro and AlmazĂĄn mud volcanoes, together with other chemosymbiotic metazoa (Siboglinum spp.), suggesting the presence of moderate seepage activity. In other mud volcanoes (Albolote, Gazul), the benthic communities are dominated by sessile filter feeders on authigenic carbonates (chimneys, slabs) and only the shell remains of some chemosymbiotic bivalves were found, indicating earlier or very low seepage conditions. The present study elaborates on the known distribution of L. asapheus and S. elarraichensis to the European waters of the Gulf of CĂĄdiz
