    Epidermis foliar de trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) en relación al genotipo y al espaciamiento entre surcos

    El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar el efecto del genotipo y del espaciamiento entre hileras sobre las características epidérmicas de la hoja bandera, en cultivares de trigo. Se sembraron cultivares comerciales, PROINTA Oasis (Oa) y Las Rosas INTA (Ri), y líneas experimentales (T7 y T24) a 2 distancias entre surcos (15 y 30 cm).  Las variables consideradas fueron frecuencia estomática (FE), índice estomático (IE), frecuencia de pares sílico-suberosos (FSS), frecuencia de aguijones (FA), ancho (AE) y largo (LE) de estomas. LE fue la única variable en la que se evidenció interacción significativa distancia-cultivar. Con respecto algenotipo, se encontraron diferencias sicnificativas entre cultivares en FE, FA y AE, mientras que no afectó IE ni FSS. En relación a FA, Ri presentó mayor respuesta promedio que Oa y que T24 . Para AE, mostró O a una media significativamente mayor que la de los restantes, mientras que para FE, T7 tuvo una media significativamente menor que la de los cultivares comerciales . Coincidiendo con otros autores, se puede considerar la FE como un criterio a tener en cuenta en la selección de nuevos cultivares

    Direct Speech Reconstruction From Articulatory Sensor Data by Machine Learning

    This paper describes a technique that generates speech acoustics from articulator movements. Our motivation is to help people who can no longer speak following laryngectomy, a procedure that is carried out tens of thousands of times per year in the Western world. Our method for sensing articulator movement, permanent magnetic articulography, relies on small, unobtrusive magnets attached to the lips and tongue. Changes in magnetic field caused by magnet movements are sensed and form the input to a process that is trained to estimate speech acoustics. In the experiments reported here this “Direct Synthesis” technique is developed for normal speakers, with glued-on magnets, allowing us to train with parallel sensor and acoustic data. We describe three machine learning techniques for this task, based on Gaussian mixture models, deep neural networks, and recurrent neural networks (RNNs). We evaluate our techniques with objective acoustic distortion measures and subjective listening tests over spoken sentences read from novels (the CMU Arctic corpus). Our results show that the best performing technique is a bidirectional RNN (BiRNN), which employs both past and future contexts to predict the acoustics from the sensor data. BiRNNs are not suitable for synthesis in real time but fixed-lag RNNs give similar results and, because they only look a little way into the future, overcome this problem. Listening tests show that the speech produced by this method has a natural quality that preserves the identity of the speaker. Furthermore, we obtain up to 92% intelligibility on the challenging CMU Arctic material. To our knowledge, these are the best results obtained for a silent-speech system without a restricted vocabulary and with an unobtrusive device that delivers audio in close to real time. This work promises to lead to a technology that truly will give people whose larynx has been removed their voices back

    An approach to the toxicity and toxicokinetics of aflatoxin B1 and ochratoxin A after simultaneous oral administration to fasted F344 rats

    Humans are exposed to the hepatotoxic aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and nephrotoxic ochratoxin A (OTA) through diet. However, kinetic and toxicological data after their co-administration are scarce. In this study, a single oral dose of AFB1 (0.25mg/kg bw)+OTA (0.5mg/kgbw) was administered to fasted F344 rats. Blood, liver and kidney were harvested at different timepoints for mycotoxins quantification, relative weight calculation, clinical biochemistry and histopathology analysis. Toxicity parameters pointed to acute toxicity in liver due to AFB1. No remarkable toxicity was observed in kidneys or immunological organs. Maximum observed concentrations in plasma (C(max)) were at 10min and 2h for AFB1 and OTA, respectively. AFB1 plasma concentration could indicate a rapid absorption/ metabolism of the mycotoxin; and AFB1 liver and kidney concentrations were lower than LOQ and LOD, respectively. For OTA, C(max) was 4326.2μg/L in plasma. In kidney and liver C(max) was reached at 8h and concentrations were very similar between both organs at all timepoints. Due to the low levels of AFB1, the effect of OTA on AFB1 kinetics could not be assessed. However, AFB1 seems not to affect OTA kinetics, as its profile seems very similar to kinetic studies performed only with OTA in similar conditions

    The muscle-bone unit in adolescent swimmers

    Most researchers adjust bone by lean mass when comparing swimmers with controls. This adjustment is done under the assumption that lean affects bone similarly in both groups. Nonetheless, we found that the muscle-bone association is uncoupled in swimmers, and consequently, researchers should avoid this adjustment when evaluating swimmers’ bone. Introduction: To examine the functional and structural muscle-bone unit in adolescent swimmers. Methods: Sixty-five swimmers (34 girls/31 boys) and 119 controls (51 girls/68 boys) participated in the study. Muscle cross-sectional area (MCSA), bone mineral content (BMC), and polar strength-strain index (SSIPOL) were measured in the non-dominant radius by peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). Subtotal BMC and lean mass were evaluated with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Handgrip and isometric knee extension (IKE) tests were performed to determine muscle force. The effect of MCSA, lean and force on SSIPOL, and BMC were tested, and the functional and structural muscle-bone ratios of swimmers and controls were compared. Results: Both muscle size (MCSA and lean) and muscle force (handgrip and IKE) influenced BMC and SSIPOL in swimmers and controls similarly. Swimmers presented normal MCSA and lean values for their height, but when compared with controls, swimmers presented a higher amount of lean and MCSA for the same BMC or SSIPOL (structural muscle-bone unit). For the functional muscle-bone unit, different results were found for the lower and upper limbs, as no differences were found for the upper limbs, while for the lower limbs, swimmers presented higher muscle force for the same amount of BMC. Conclusions: The contradictory results regarding BMC in swimmers found in previous studies could partly be explained with the findings of the present study that reinforce the idea that swimming is not an effective sport to practice regarding bone mass and that the muscle-bone unit is different in swimmers than in controls

    Voice restoration after laryngectomy based on magnetic sensing of articulator movement and statistical articulation-to-speech conversion

    © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.In this work, we present a silent speech system that is able to generate audible speech from captured movement of speech articulators. Our goal is to help laryngectomy patients, i.e. patients who have lost the ability to speak following surgical removal of the larynx most frequently due to cancer, to recover their voice. In our system, we use a magnetic sensing technique known as Permanent Magnet Articulography (PMA) to capture the movement of the lips and tongue by attaching small magnets to the articulators and monitoring the magnetic field changes with sensors close to the mouth. The captured sensor data is then transformed into a sequence of speech parameter vectors from which a time-domain speech signal is finally synthesised. The key component of our system is a parametric transformation which represents the PMA-tospeech mapping. Here, this transformation takes the form of a statistical model (a mixture of factor analysers, more specifically) whose parameters are learned from simultaneous recordings of PMA and speech signals acquired before laryngectomy. To evaluate the performance of our system on voice reconstruction, we recorded two PMA-and-speech databases with different phonetic complexity for several non-impaired subjects. Results show that our system is able to synthesise speech that sounds as the original voice of the subject and also is intelligible. However, more work still need to be done to achieve a consistent synthesis for phonetically-rich vocabularies

    A silent speech system based on permanent magnet articulography and direct synthesis

    In this paper we present a silent speech interface (SSI) system aimed at restoring speech communication for individuals who have lost their voice due to laryngectomy or diseases affecting the vocal folds. In the proposed system, articulatory data captured from the lips and tongue using permanent magnet articulography (PMA) are converted into audible speech using a speaker-dependent transformation learned from simultaneous recordings of PMA and audio signals acquired before laryngectomy. The transformation is represented using a mixture of factor analysers, which is a generative model that allows us to efficiently model non-linear behaviour and perform dimensionality reduction at the same time. The learned transformation is then deployed during normal usage of the SSI to restore the acoustic speech signal associated with the captured PMA data. The proposed system is evaluated using objective quality measures and listening tests on two databases containing PMA and audio recordings for normal speakers. Results show that it is possible to reconstruct speech from articulator movements captured by an unobtrusive technique without an intermediate recognition step. The SSI is capable of producing speech of sufficient intelligibility and naturalness that the speaker is clearly identifiable, but problems remain in scaling up the process to function consistently for phonetically rich vocabularies

    Towards an intraoral-based silent speech restoration system for post-laryngectomy voice replacement

    © Springer International Publishing AG 2017,Silent Speech Interfaces (SSIs) are alternative assistive speech technologies that are capable of restoring speech communication for those individuals who have lost their voice due to laryngectomy or diseases affecting the vocal cords. However, many of these SSIs are still deemed as impractical due to a high degree of intrusiveness and discomfort, hence limiting their transition to outside of the laboratory environment. We aim to address the hardware challenges faced in developing a practical SSI for post-laryngectomy speech rehabilitation. A new Permanent Magnet Articulography (PMA) system is presented which fits within the palatal cavity of the user’s mouth, giving unobtrusive appearance and high portability. The prototype is comprised of a miniaturized circuit constructed using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and is implemented in the form of a dental retainer, which is mounted under roof of the user’s mouth and firmly clasps onto the upper teeth. Preliminary evaluation via speech recognition experiments demonstrates that the intraoral prototype achieves reasonable word recognition accuracy and is comparable to the external PMA version. Moreover, the intraoral design is expected to improve on its stability and robustness, with a much improved appearance since it can be completely hidden inside the user’s mouth

    Effect of Lifestyle Intervention in the Concentration of Adipoquines and Branched Chain Amino Acids in Subjects with High Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes: Feel4Diabetes Study

    Introduction: The global prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is increasing rapidly, especially in low- and middle-income countries and has a high number of associated comorbidities. Plasmatic concentrations of branched chain amino acids (BCAA) and retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) have been shown to be elevated in T2D subjects in cross-sectional studies. However, the effect of lifestyle community-based interventions on BCAA and RBP4 concentrations has not yet been analyzed. Material and methods: The Feel4Diabetes study is a school and community-based intervention that identified 360 European families with a high risk of developing T2D according to the FINDRISC questionnaire. Families were randomized in control and intervention groups were followed-up from 2016 to 2018. In the Spanish families, the concentration of BCAA and RBP4 was determined in 266 subjects (115 control and 151 intervention group) that attended the three time-point assessments by colorimetric and ELISA reaction, respectively. Results: Baseline BCAA levels showed positive correlations with the FINDRISC score and glucose impairment (baseline glucose, insulin, and glycated hemoglobin), body mass index, and body weight. The participants receiving the community-based intervention showed a significant decrease in glycated hemoglobin and BCAA levels compared to the control group (p = 0.011 and p < 0.001, respectively). However, baseline RBP4 did not show significant correlations with anthropometric and glycemic parameters, and no significant change was observed in anthropometric parameters and RBP4 concentrations throughout the follow-up. Conclusion: A community-based intervention on lifestyle led to a significant reduction in BCAA levels regardless of weight loss. These findings suggest that this interventional approach could be promising in T2D prevention
