Industrial activities are the most common cause of water contamination by heavy metals, which endanger the quality of water resources and human health, due to their bioaccumulation capacity and consequent biomagnification. For this reason, the removal of metals from e uents before their discharge into the receiving water bodies is of crucial importance. This is why, in the present investigation, the biosorption processes of Cd (II) and Pb (II) in Phaseolus vulgaris L. (bean) agricultural residues (stems, leaves and leaf sheaths) were optimized. The influence of pH, biosorbent doses and initial concentration levels of metallic ions was evaluated using the response surface methodology (RSM). Quadratic models were developed for the percent removal of Cd (II) and Pb (II). Optimal biosorption conditions were attained at pH = 4.3, a 7.4 g/L biosorbent dose and an initial 9.14 mg/L concentration of each metal, achieving percent removals of 87.70 and 95.58% for Cd (II) and Pb (II), respectively. The FT-IR characterization showed that the functional groups involved in adsorption would be in the range of 2300 to 2400 cm-1. The biosorption kinetics were described by the pseudo first order model and the equilibrium data was adjusted to the Freundlich isotherm. An approximate desorption of 98% of Cd (II) and Pb (II) was achieved. The Phaseolus vulgaris L. residue showed a great biosorption capacity of Cd (II) and Pb (II) simultaneously.
Campus Arequip
Spin-Glass State in
Magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat and positive muon spin
relaxation (\musr) measurements have been used to characterize the magnetic
ground-state of the spinel compound . We observe a spin-glass
transition of the S=1/2 spins below characterized
by a cusp in the susceptibility curve which suppressed when a magnetic field is
applied. We show that the magnetization of depends on the

Kubo-Toyabe expression reflecting that the spin freezing process in results Gaussian distribution of the magnetic moments. By means of
Monte-Carlo simulati we obtain the relevant exchange integrals between the spins in this compound.Comment: 6 pages, 16 figure
HST/STIS Observations of the Optical Counterpart to GRB 970228
We report on observations of the fading optical counterpart of the gamma-ray burst GRB 970228, made on 4~September~1997 using the STIS CCD on the Hubble Space Telescope. The unresolved counterpart is detected at V=28 +/- 0.25, consistent with a continued power-law decline with exponent -1.14 +/- 0.05. No proper motion is detected, in contradiction of some earlier claims. The counterpart is located within, but near the edge of, a faint extended source with diameter ~0."8 and integrated magnitude 25.7 +/- 0.25. Comparison with WFPC2 data taken one month after the initial burst and NTT data taken on March 13 shows no evidence for fading of the extended emission. After adjusting for the probable Galactic extinction in the direction of GRB 970228 of A_v=0.7, we find that the observed nebula is consistent with the sizes of galaxies of comparable magnitude found in the Hubble Deep Field and other deep HST images, and that only 2% of the sky is covered by galaxies of similar or greater surface brightness. Therefore, the extended source observed about GRB 970228 is most likely a galaxy at moderate redshift, and is almost certainly the host of the gamma-ray burst

Ex vivo culture of intact human patient derived pancreatic tumour tissue
The poor prognosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is attributed to the highly fibrotic stroma and complex multi-cellular microenvironment that is difficult to fully recapitulate in pre-clinical models. To fast-track translation of therapies and to inform personalised medicine, we aimed to develop a whole-tissue ex vivo explant model that maintains viability, 3D multicellular architecture, and microenvironmental cues of human pancreatic tumours. Patient-derived surgically-resected PDAC tissue was cut into 1-2 mm explants and cultured on gelatin sponges for 12 days. Immunohistochemistry revealed that human PDAC explants were viable for 12 days and maintained their original tumour, stromal and extracellular matrix architecture. As proof-of-principle, human PDAC explants were treated with Abraxane and we observed different levels of response between patients. PDAC explants were also transfected with polymeric nanoparticles + Cy5-siRNA and we observed abundant cytoplasmic distribution of Cy5-siRNA throughout the PDAC explants. Overall, our novel model retains the 3D architecture of human PDAC and has advantages over standard organoids: presence of functional multi-cellular stroma and fibrosis, and no tissue manipulation, digestion, or artificial propagation of organoids. This provides unprecedented opportunity to study PDAC biology including tumour-stromal interactions and rapidly assess therapeutic response to drive personalised treatment.John Kokkinos, George Sharbeen, Koroush S.
