    Resonance phenomena of a solitonlike extended object in a bistable potential

    We investigate the dynamics of a soliton that behaves as an extended particle. The soliton motion in an effective bistable potential can be chaotic in a similar way as the Duffing oscillator. We generalize the concept of geometrical resonance to spatiotemporal systems and apply it to design a nonfeedback mechanism of chaos control using localized perturbations.We show the existence of solitonic stochastic resonance.Comment: 3 postscript figure

    Improving Cognitive Visual-Motor Abilities in Individuals with Down Syndrome

    Down syndrome causes a reduction in cognitive abilities, with visual-motor skills being particularly affected. In this work, we have focused on this skill in order to stimulate better learning. The proposal relies on stimulating the cognitive visual-motor skills of individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) using exercises with a gestural interaction platform based on the KINECT sensor named TANGO:H, the goal being to improve them. To validate the proposal, an experimental single-case study method was designed using two groups: a control group and an experimental one, with similar cognitive ages. Didactic exercises were provided to the experimental group using visual cognitive stimulation. These exercises were created on the TANGO:H Designer, a platform that was designed for gestural interaction using the KINECT sensor. As a result, TANGO:H allows for visual-motor cognitive stimulation through the movement of hands, arms, feet and head. The “Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA)” was applied to both groups as a pre-test and post-test in its four reference sections: visual comprehension, visual-motor sequential memory, visual association, and visual integration. Two checks were made, one using the longitudinal comparison of the pre-test/post-test of the experimental group, and another that relied on comparing the difference of the means of the pre-test/post-test. We also used an observational methodology for the working sessions from the experimental group. Although the statistical results do not show significant differences between the two groups, the results of the observations exhibited an improvement in visual-motor cognitive skills

    Graphite Oxide: A Simple and Reproducible Synthesis Route

    The synthesis of graphite oxide (GrO) by oxidation of graphite has been carried out by different procedures. In this chapter, we describe a simple synthesis route based on Hummers’ method without the usage of NaNO3 achieving nearly the same outcomes, and this methodology is directed toward high-quality scale production of GrO with similar properties compared with GrO obtained with traditional and improved Hummers’ methods. The GrO was obtained in a series of batch reactions and characterized by different techniques, and the results showed identical interlayer d-space, type and content of oxygen functionalities, and ID/IG ratio. The high reproducibility of this methodology offers an efficient alternative for the large-scale production of graphene oxide

    Modelling of bismuth segregation in InAsBi/InAs superlattices: Determination of the exchange energies

    InAsBi dilute alloys are potential new candidates for the improvement of infrared optoelectronic devices such as photodetectors or lasers. In this work, InAsBi/InAs superlattices (SLs)with Bi contents ranging between 1 and 3% were grown by molecular beam epitaxy with different Bi fluxes and growth temperatures to analyze Bi segregation by cross sectional transmission electron microscopy techniques. Bi segregation profiles have been described layer-by-layer using a three-layer fluid exchange mechanism, extracting the values of the As/Bi exchange energies (E 1 , 1.26 ± 0.01 eV and E 2 , 1.36 ± 0.02 eV). A relationship to calculate the activation energies for exchange from the binding energies in III–V alloys is proposed, which would allow predicting them for other hitherto unknown compounds

    Finite axisymmetric charged dust disks in conformastatic spacetimes

    An infinite family of axisymmetric charged dust disks of finite extension is presented. The disks are obtained by solving the vacuum Einstein-Maxwell equations for conformastatic spacetimes, which are characterized by only one metric function. In order to obtain the solutions, it is assumed that the metric function and the electric potential are functionally related and that the metric function is functionally dependent of another auxiliary function, which is taken as a solution of Laplace equation. The solutions for the auxiliary function are then taken as given by the infinite family of generalized Kalnajs disks recently obtained by Gonz\'alez and Reina (MNRAS 371, 1873, 2006), which is expressed in terms of the oblate spheroidal coordinates and represents a well behaved family of finite axisymmetric flat galaxy models. The so obtained relativistic thin disks have then a charge density that is equal, except maybe by a sign, to their mass density, in such a way that the electric and gravitational forces are in exact balance. The energy density of the disks is everywhere positive and well behaved, vanishing at the edge. Accordingly, as the disks are made of dust, their energy-momentum tensor it agrees with all the energy conditions.Comment: Submitted to PR

    Homologue expression of a fungal endo-1,4-β-Dxylanase using submerged and solid substrate fermentations

    The xyn5 gene, which encodes an endo-β-1,4-xylanase (Xyn5), in Aspergillus niger GS1 was cloned into an expression cassette under the control of constitutive glyceraldhehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene promoter. The expression system was designed to produce the recombinant enzyme containing a six-histidine peptide fused to the carboxyl end of the protein. The efficiency of Xyn5 production under submerged (SmF) and solid-state (SSF) fermentation was investigated using the homologous cotransformed A. niger AB4.1. A productivity of 17.1 U/(l·h) was estimated for SSF and 3.2 U/(l·h) for SmF calculated at peak value of enzyme titers. Recombinant Xyn5 obtained by SSF on polyurethane fiber, was purified 5.1-fold by anion exchange and immobilized metal affinity chromatography, with 35.7% recovery. The purified recombinant enzyme showed an apparent molecular weight of 30 kDa and optimal activity (522 U/mg protein) at pH 5.5 and 50°C.Key words: Aspergillus niger GS1, xylanolytic activity, solid-state fermentation, homologue expression, polyurethane fiber
