Compression principle and Zipf’s Law of brevity in infochemical communication

    Get PDF
Compression has been presented as a general principle of animal communication. Zipf’s Law of brevity is a manifestation of this postulate and can be generalized as the tendency of more frequent communicative elements to be shorter. Previous works supported this claim, showing evidence of Zipf’s Law of brevity in animal acoustical communication and human language. However, a significant part of the communicative effort in biological systems is carried out in other transmission channels, such as those based on infochemicals. To fill this gap, we seek, for the first time, evidence of this principle in infochemical communication by analysing the statistical tendency of more frequent infochemicals to be chemically shorter and lighter. We analyse data from the largest and most comprehensive open-access infochemical database known as Pherobase, recovering Zipf’s Law of brevity in interspecific communication (allelochemicals) but not in intraspecific communication (pheromones). Moreover, these results are robust even when addressing different magnitudes of study or mathematical approaches. Therefore, different dynamics from the compression principle would dominate intraspecific chemical communication, defying the universality of Zipf’s Law of brevity. To conclude, we discuss the exception found for pheromones in the light of other potential communicative paradigms such as pressures on successful communication or the Handicap principle.

[EN] The main purpose of the proposed work is the study of hydrogen as a fuel, analyzing its main differences with other conventional fuels when it is introduced in a MCIA given its peculiar properties. For this purpose, the different possibilities of introducing hydrogen in engines will be considered, making an analysis of how some properties vary once the hydrogen is introduced into the engine, that is to say, what effect compression has on relevant properties of the air-fuel mixture. The hydrogen combustion reaction must be considered, and then the combustion of a hydrogen-air mixture inside an engine is considered, estimating the performance, heat release and emissions produced in the engine and their control.

Emergence of linguistic laws in human voice

    Get PDF
Linguistic laws constitute one of the quantitative cornerstones of modern cognitive sciences and have been routinely investigated in written corpora, or in the equivalent transcription of oral corpora. This means that inferences of statistical patterns of language in acoustics are biased by the arbitrary, language-dependent segmentation of the signal, and virtually precludes the possibility of making comparative studies between human voice and other animal communication systems. Here we bridge this gap by proposing a method that allows to measure such patterns in acoustic signals of arbitrary origin, without needs to have access to the language corpus underneath. The method has been applied to sixteen different human languages, recovering successfully some well-known laws of human communication at timescales even below the phoneme and finding yet another link between complexity and criticality in a biological system. These methods further pave the way for new comparative studies in animal communication or the analysis of signals of unknown code.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Carbo vegetabilis at 30 HC, a homeopathic remedy, and Belacol 100, were economic and clinically compared in treating piglets with diarrhea. A sample of eighty 10-day old animals with an initial mean weight of 2.6 kg distrib- uted into two groups was studied. Group I received ten sublingual drops of Carbo vegetabilis at 30 HC every 12 hours for five days, while Group II was orally administered 260 mg/kg of Belacol 100 for five days. A chi-square test of 5 % significance and an analysis of variance (ANOVA) were performed. Piglet appetite showed no significant differences on the third and fifth days under treatment; however, weight gain was highly significant (P < 0.001) in those homoeopathically treated. On the other hand, this therapy proved to be more economic than the conventional one

Permanent cardiac sarcomere changes in a rabbit model of intrauterine growth restriction

    Get PDF
Background: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) induces fetal cardiac remodelling and dysfunction, which persists postnatally and may explain the link between low birth weight and increased cardiovascular mortality in adulthood. However, the cellular and molecular bases for these changes are still not well understood. We tested the hypothesis that IUGR is associated with structural and functional gene expression changes in the fetal sarcomere cytoarchitecture, which remain present in adulthood. Methods and results: IUGR was induced in New Zealand pregnant rabbits by selective ligation of the utero-placental vessels. Fetal echocardiography demonstrated more globular hearts and signs of cardiac dysfunction in IUGR. Second harmonic generation microscopy (SHGM) showed shorter sarcomere length and shorter A-band and thick-thin filament interaction lengths, that were already present in utero and persisted at 70 postnatal days (adulthood). Sarcomeric M-band (GO: 0031430) functional term was over-represented in IUGR fetal hearts. Conclusion: The results suggest that IUGR induces cardiac dysfunction and permanent changes on the sarcomere

A clinical assay phase II, open, non-sequential and randomized was carried out on suffering swine dysentery fattening pigs at the Swine raising Center in Ciego de Avila, with the objective of assessing the clinical evolution, dehydration and appetite during treatment with China officinalis 6 CH and Tylobel-DHS, and estimating the economical effects on the diarrheas produced by the disease. The sample was distributed in two groups, each one of 40 animals: (1) treated with 5 sublingual drops of China officinalis 6 CH, every 12 hours the first day and every 24 h during the rest of the days up to seven, and Ringer solution (100-300 mL intra-peritoneal) according to the evaluated dehydration; (2) treated with Tylobel-DHS every 24 hours for seven days via intramuscular (1 mL/kg de peso) and Ringer solution the same as in group 1. Comparing the clinical evolution and dehydration, significant differences (p<0.05) between both groups were not observed. The appetite showed significant differences (p<0.05) favoring the homeopathically treated animals. It was demonstrated that the assayed homeopathic technique was more effective and economically feasible than the conventional one what gives the possibility of reducing the use of Tylobel-DHS in the therapy of swine dysentery.

Indirect estimation of overhead line ampacity in overhead lines integrating wind farms

    Get PDF
Ampacity techniques have been used by Distributor System Operators (DSO) and Transport System Operators (TSO) in order to increase the static rate of transport and distribution infrastructures, especially those who are used for the grid integration of renewable energy. In some cases, especially when the overhead lines are used to evacuate energy from wind farms, there is a direct correlation between the ampacity of the overhead lines and the active power produced by the wind farms. This papers analyses this correlation considering the most important weather parameters like wind, ambient temperature and solar irradiation. This work was supported by the Spanish Government under the R+D initiative INNPACTO with reference IPT-2011-1447-920000
