    Report of MIRACLE team for Geographical IR in CLEF 2006

    The main objective of the designed experiments is testing the effects of geographical information retrieval from documents that contain geographical tags. In the designed experiments we try to isolate geographical retrieval from textual retrieval replacing all geo-entity textual references from topics with associated tags and splitting the retrieval process in two phases: textual retrieval from the textual part of the topic without geo-entity references and geographical retrieval from the tagged text generated by the topic tagger. Textual and geographical results are combined applying different techniques: union, intersection, difference, and external join based. Our geographic information retrieval system consists of a set of basics components organized in two categories: (i) linguistic tools oriented to textual analysis and retrieval and (ii) resources and tools oriented to geographical analysis. These tools are combined to carry out the different phases of the system: (i) documents and topics analysis, (ii) relevant documents retrieval and (iii) result combination. If we compare the results achieved to the last campaign’s results, we can assert that mean average precision gets worse when the textual geo-entity references are replaced with geographical tags. Part of this worsening is due to our experiments return cero pertinent documents if no documents satisfy de geographical sub-query. But if we only analyze the results of queries that satisfied both textual and geographical terms, we observe that the designed experiments recover pertinent documents quickly, improving R-Precision values. We conclude that the developed geographical information retrieval system is very sensible to textual georeference and therefore it is necessary to improve the name entity recognition module

    MIRACLE at ImageCLEFanot 2007: Machine Learning Experiments on Medical Image Annotation

    This paper describes the participation of MIRACLE research consortium at the ImageCLEF Medical Image Annotation task of ImageCLEF 2007. Our areas of expertise do not include image analysis, thus we approach this task as a machine-learning problem, regardless of the domain. FIRE is used as a black-box algorithm to extract different groups of image features that are later used for training different classifiers in order to predict the IRMA code. Three types of classifiers are built. The first type is a single classifier that predicts the complete IRMA code. The second type is a two level classifier composed of four classifiers that individually predict each axis of the IRMA code. The third type is similar to the second one but predicts a combined pair of axes. The main idea behind the definition of our experiments is to evaluate whether an axis-by-axis prediction is better than a prediction by pairs of axes or the complete code, or vice versa. We submitted 30 experiments to be evaluated and results are disappointing compared to other groups. However, the main conclusion that can be drawn from the experiments is that, irrespective of the selected image features, the axis-by-axis prediction achieves more accurate results not only than the prediction of a combined pair of axes but also, in turn, than the prediction of the complete IRMA code. In addition, data normalization seems to improve the predictions and vector-based features are preferred over histogram-based ones

    La identidad determina nuestra forma de ser y de actuar. El objetivo de este trabajo es conocer la percepción de los estudiantes que serán, en un trabajo futuro, los profesores de la enseñanza secundaria, y cómo crean su identidad profesional en su formación inicial. Así, mediante un cuestionario, se recogieron pruebas que nos llevan a observar, entre otras cosas, que, por un lado, el grado de estudio de origen determina mucho el papel de los docentes y sus argumentos, lo que refuerza la opinión disciplinar de esta etapa. Por el otro, están recibiendo formación didáctica que les lleva a conocer más y a formar mejor su identidad profesional. Y, por último, a pesar de los requisitos administrativos, los estudiantes se sienten poco capacitados para enseñar en otro idioma.The identity determines our way of being and acting. The aim of this work is to know the students’ perception who will be teachers in secondary education on their future work, and how they create their professional identity in their initial training. Thus, using a questionnaire, we collected evidence that lead us to observe, among other things, that on the one hand, the study degree of origin determines much the role of teachers and their arguments, reinforcing the view discipline of this stage. On the other, they are receiving didactic training that leads them to learn more and better to form their professional identity. And lastly, that, despite the administrative requirements, students feel few qualified to teach in another language

    MIRACLE at ImageCLEFannot 2008: Classification of Image Features for Medical Image Annotation

    This paper describes the participation of MIRACLE research consortium at the ImageCLEF Medical Image Annotation task of ImageCLEF 2008. A lot of effort was invested this year to develop our own image analysis system, based on MATLAB, to be used in our experiments. This system extracts a variety of global and local features including histogram, image statistics, Gabor features, fractal dimension, DCT and DWT coefficients, Tamura features and coocurrency matrix statistics. Then a k-Nearest Neighbour algorithm analyzes the extracted image feature vectors to determine the IRMA code associated to a given image. The focus of our experiments is mainly to test and evaluate this system in-depth and to make a comparison among diverse configuration parameters such as number of images for the relevance feedback to use in the classification module

    Report of MIRACLE team for the Ad-Hoc track in CLEF 2007

    This paper presents the 2007 MIRACLE’s team approach to the AdHoc Information Retrieval track. The work carried out for this campaign has been reduced to monolingual experiments, in the standard and in the robust tracks. No new approaches have been attempted in this campaign, following the procedures established in our participation in previous campaigns. For this campaign, runs were submitted for the following languages and tracks: - Monolingual: Bulgarian, Hungarian, and Czech. - Robust monolingual: French, English and Portuguese. There is still some room for improvement around multilingual named entities recognition

    An essential tool for natural heritage management: The geomorphological map of Valderejo Natural Park

    Producción CientíficaThis study supports the usefulness of geomorphological mapping as a tool for gaining an understanding of the landscape and assessing natural heritage. Mapping provides an essentially scientific document with great potential for the diffusion of geomorphological knowledge in that it provides a guide to the user of natural protected areas as well as serving as a tool for its management regarding geotourist itineraries, geodiversity, and geomorphosites. The example of the Valderejo Natural Park is presented, which is located in Álava (Spain) and whose geomorphology has been mapped following a methodology based on fieldwork, desktop work, and the use of Geographic Information Systems.     Modelling and Terrestrial Laser Scanning Methodology (2009–2018) on Debris Cones in Temperate High Mountains

    Producción CientíficaDebris cones are a very common landform in temperate high mountains. They are the most representative examples of the periglacial and nival processes. This work studies the dynamic behavior of two debris cones (Cone A and Cone B) in the Picos de Europa, in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. Their evolution was measured uninterruptedly throughout each August for 10 years (2009–2018) using the Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) technique. The observations and calculations of the two debris cones were treated independently, but both showed the same behavior. Therefore, if these results are extrapolated to other debris cones in similar environments (temperate high mountain), they should show behavior similar to that of the two debris cones analyzed. Material falls onto the cones from the walls, and transfer of sediments follows linear trajectories according to the maximum slope. In order to understand the linear evolution of the two debris cones, profiles were created along the maximum slope lines of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of 2009, and these profile lines were extrapolated to the remaining years of measurement. In order to determine volumetric surface behavior in the DEMs, each year for the period 2009–2018 was compared. In addition, the statistical predictive value for position (Z) in year 2018 was calculated for the same planimetric position (X,Y) throughout the profiles of maximum slopes. To do so, the real field data from 2009–2017 were interpolated and used to form a sample of curves. These curves are interpreted as the realization of a functional random variable that can be predicted using statistical techniques. The predictive curve obtained was compared with the 2018 field data.     Surface photometry of radio loud elliptical galaxies from the B2 sample

    V-band CCD imaging is presented for 72 galaxies from the B2 radio sample (Colla et al.; Fanti et al.), with redshifts up to 0.2 and radio powers P408=1023-1026.5 W Hz-1. According to the morphology on the optical images 57 galaxies are classified as ellipticals, 6 as spirals and 7 as irregular. Surface photometry of the sample of ellipticals was obtained fitting ellipses to the light distribution. The light profile of these galaxies generally follows a de Vaucouleurs law, although in three cases the profiles show large excesses relative to the r1/4 law at large radii. The fitted μe and re parameters for the de Vaucouleurs galaxies are given in the paper. Three of the ellipticals show a bright nucleus. One of them is a known broad line radio galaxy (B2 1833+32) and the remaining two are Markarian galaxies, classified in the literature as BL Lac objects (B2 1101+38 and B2 1652+39). The radial profiles for ellipticity, position angle, and B4 term of the Fourier analysis are presented in the paper, and the morphological peculiarities of the ellipticals are described, including the presence of shells, tails, nuclear dust, isophote twisting, off-centering, and boxiness or diskness of the isophotes. Only one of the galaxies in this work is included in the subsample of B2 radio galaxies with well-defined jets (Parma et al.). In this sense the present sample complements the sample of 24 radio galaxies with well-defined radio jets in Parma et al. for which a similar study was presented in González-Serrano et al.). The irregular galaxy B2 0916+33 appears to be misclassified, and we suggest that the right identification of the radio source is a nearby point like object with V=18.45 mag. The spiral galaxy associated with B2 1441+26 is also misclassified. A point-like optical object with V=18.88 mag, located at arcsec from the original identification and coincident with the radio core is the most probable counterpart

    Environmental education and landscape leisure. Geotourist map and geomorphosites in the Picos de Europa National Park

    Picos de Europa National Park is the oldest and most extensive National Park in Spain, a symbol of conservationism and management of Iberian nature. The present day use is defined by abandoned ancient traditional structures, summer livestock and mainly tourism in and around the National Park, and over the last forty years the visitors of the National Park has grown until 2 million per year. The context of the map it framed in the next questions, which places are most frequented by visitors?, what places are the most interesting to visitors?, what are visitors looking for?, and who visits the National park? The main type of visitors are mountaineers (1,5%), hikers (5), active tourists (10%), recreational tourists (66%) and students (16%). Hikers and active tourist represent the 18% of visitors to the National Park, over 120,000 visitors per year. They are, joint the monitors and teachers guiding students groups, the main objective of documents and geotouristic maps. The map has five levels of reading (planimetry, altimetry, geomorphology, human uses and tourist routes), the elements are represented by areas, patterns and symbols in colours, and the selected significant elements represent the topography, geomorphological features (glacial, karst, nivation, landslide) and human remains (mining, grazing) and routes between geomorphosites and more representative scenic view points. The interpretative geotouristic maps are useful tools to develop an approach to tourist activity and for interpret nature and landscapes from direct knowledge of the field but also they are a powerful tool for environmental educationin National Parks and Natural Protected Areas.This work was funded by the projects OAPN 053/2010 (Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Environment, Spain) and the support of the Picos deEuropa National Park

    MIRACLE’s Ad-Hoc and Geographical IR Approaches for CLEF 2006

    This paper presents the 2006 Miracle team’s approaches to the Ad-Hoc and Geographical Information Retrieval tasks. A first set of runs was obtained using a set of basic components. Then, by putting together special combinations of these runs, an extended set was obtained. With respect to previous campaigns some improvements have been introduced in our system: an entity recognition prototype is integrated in our tokenization scheme, and the performance of our indexing and retrieval engine has been improved. For GeoCLEF, we tested retrieving using geo-entity and textual references separately, and then combining them with different approaches
