Galactic conformity measured in semi-analytic models
We study the correlation between the specific star formation rate of central
galaxies and neighbour galaxies, also known as 'galactic conformity', out to 20
Mpc/h using three semi-analytic models (SAMs, one from L-GALAXIES and other two
from GALFORM). The aim is to establish whether SAMs are able to show galactic
conformity using different models and selection criteria. In all the models,
when the selection of primary galaxies is based on an isolation criterion in
real space, the mean fraction of quenched galaxies around quenched primary
galaxies is higher than that around star-forming primary galaxies of the same
stellar mass. The overall signal of conformity decreases when we remove
satellites selected as primary galaxies, but the effect is much stronger in
GALFORM models compared with the L-GALAXIES model. We find this difference is
partially explained by the fact that in GALFORM once a galaxy becomes a
satellite remains as such, whereas satellites can become centrals at a later
time in L-GALAXIES. The signal of conformity decreases down to 60% in the
L-GALAXIES model after removing central galaxies that were ejected from their
host halo in the past. Galactic conformity is also influenced by primary
galaxies at fixed stellar mass that reside in dark matter haloes of different
masses. Finally, we explore a proxy of conformity between distinct haloes. In
this case the conformity is weak beyond ~ 3 Mpc/h (<3% in L-GALAXIES, <1-2% in
GALFORM models). Therefore, it seems difficult that conformity is directly
related with a long-range effect.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Pyroclasts of the first phases of the explosive-effusive PCCVC volcanic eruption: physicochemical analysis
The morphology, texture, grain size and other physicochemical characteristics of pyroclastic material from the first phases of the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic complex (PCCVC) eruption, (Southern Andes, Chile), can be associated to the model recently reported for the magma storage and its ascent conditions. The eruption started June 4th 2011, and the studied volcanic material corresponds to that collected in Argentine territory at different distances from the source, between 4 and 12 June 2011. The explosive-effusive volcanic process of the first days occurred with the simultaneous emplacement of lava flows and the venting of pyroclastic material, ejecting two well differentiated types of particles. The more abundant was constituted by rhyolitic and light color pumice fragments, characterized by a typical vesicular texture, easy fragmentation and absence of occluded crystalline phases. Particles found in minor proportion were dark color, different in shape and texture and rich in Fe and Ti. They seemed to be more effective for the interaction with emitted gases in the upper part of the column, for this reason, they appeared partially covered by condensation products. The ascent conditions of the magma affected its rheological behavior through variations in the degassing, viscosity and fragmentation. On the other hand, distance to the source, depositional time, volcanic evolution and environmental conditions are factors that affect the chemical composition of collected ash. So, the SiO2/FeO ratio not only increases with the distance but also with the deposition time and volcanic activity. The work was done with the aid of several techniques such as a laser-sediment analyzer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analysis (bulk and surface), SEM microscopy and Raman “microprobe” spectroscopy. On the other hand, the physicochemical behavior of the pyroclastic material allows us to suggest eventual applications
Not Hydro: Using Neural Networks to estimate galaxy properties on a Dark-Matter-Only simulation
Using data from TNG300-2, we train a neural network (NN) to recreate the
stellar mass () and star formation rate (SFR) of central galaxies in a
dark-matter-only simulation. We consider 12 input properties from the halo and
sub-halo hosting the galaxy and the near environment. predictions are
robust, but the machine does not fully reproduce its scatter. The same happens
for SFR, but the predictions are not as good as for . We chained neural
networks, improving the predictions on SFR to some extent. For SFR, we
time-averaged this value between and , which improved results for
. Predictions of both variables have trouble reproducing values at lower
and higher ends. We also study the impact of each input variable in the
performance of the predictions using a leave-one-covariate-out approach, which
led to insights about the physical and statistical relation between input
variables. In terms of metrics, our machine outperforms similar studies, but
the main discoveries in this work are not linked with the quality of the
predictions themselves, but to how the predictions relate to the input
variables. We find that previously studied relations between physical variables
are meaningful to the machine. We also find that some merger tree properties
strongly impact the performance of the machine. %We highlight the value of
machine learning (ML) methods in helping understand the information contained
in different variables, since with its help we were able to obtain useful
insights resulting from studying the impact of input variables on the resulting
behaviour of galaxy properties. We conclude that ML models are useful tools to
understand the significance of physical different properties and their impact
on target characteristics, as well as strong candidates for potential
simulation methods.Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, to be published in MNRA

Benthic diatoms are cultured usually under laboratory conditions to be used as a food source for other organisms, ofaquaculture interest or for biotechnological applications. Laboratory experiments demonstrate the incidence of the physicaland chemical variables on abundance and growth rates of diatoms. While macronutrients are usually selected and dosed intocommon culture mediums to meet the general requirements of a wide range of diatoms, the availability and optimizationof micronutrients are more susceptible to each organism’s particular physiological conditions. The aim of this study was tocharacterize the growth of two species of benthic diatoms isolated from the Salar de Huasco in batch cultures at differentconditions of temperature (10, 15 and 20 °C), light intensity (40, 80 and 120 ?mol m-2 s-1) and concentrations of silica (1.06x 10-4 M Na2SiO3 x 9H2O and 2.12 x 10-4 M Na2SiO3 x 9H2O) and selenium (10-8 M H2SeO3) in f/2 medium, on a lightdarkcycle of 18:6 h. Both Nitzschia epithemioides Grunow in Cleve & Grunow (1880) as Nitzschia sp. showed highermaximum cell densities (692800 ± 107704 and 649600 ± 68942 cells ml-1, respectively) and exponential growth rates(1.80±0.56 and 0.97±0.32 div. d-1, respectively) at the highest temperature (20°C). The light intensity to which the cultureswere exposed had no effect on cell density and exponential growth rate in both taxa. Regarding to nutrients, an increasein silicates concentrations on the culture medium could promote the growth of N. epithemioides and Nitzschia sp. since atendency was observed to higher cell densities (1.08 x 106 ± 84,639 and 1.32 x 106 ± 109,038 cells ml-1, respectively) andexponential growth rates (1.98 ± 0.44 and 0.95 ± 0.18 div. d-1, respectively) with respect at the normal f/2 medium and f/2medium plus selenium. Simultaneous addition of silicate and selenium to the culture medium increased the maximum celldensity of the two strains under study, but this increase was significant (p = 0.05) only for N. epithemioides and amongthe normal f/2 medium (719200 ± 116895 cells ml-1) and the f/2 medium with double the amount of silicate and selenium(1498800 ± 209599 cells ml-1). However, the exponential growth rates were not significantly different when comparedto those of the control (without the addition of silicate and selenium). In conclusion both N. epithemioides and Nitzschiasp shown an increased cell density and exponential growth rate at 20 °C. The different light intensities not significantlyinfluenced the growth of both taxa. An increase in the concentration of silicates or simultaneous increase in silicatesand selenium in the culture medium can be considered as possible strategy to increase cell density of benthic diatom N.epithemioides in batch cultures.de alimento de otros organismos de interés acuícola o para aplicaciones biotecnológicas.
Masonry mortars, precast concrete and masonry units using coal bottom ash as a partial replacement for conventional aggregates
Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade da Coruña/CISUG[Abstract:] Granular coal combustion products are problematic waste materials whose use as aggregates in concrete has been extensively studied. However, its integration into other non-structural materials and elements has not been so widely documented. Masonry mortars, precast concrete and masonry units with different ratios of coal bottom ash replacing conventional aggregates have been studied. With the incorporation of coal bottom ash in the mortars, the workability, density and strength decrease whereas the porosity, the weight loss and the drying shrinkage increase. However, low replacement ratios have slight effects. The use of coal bottom ash as an internal curing water reservoir is proposed as the most promising future line of research.
Q = * e (-KIP) Budyko
Q = P — [P/(1 + ( PI K)2)°’51 Turc-Pike
Q=Pj1—e”j Pizarro
