High Order Multistep Methods with Improved Phase-Lag Characteristics for the Integration of the Schr\"odinger Equation
In this work we introduce a new family of twelve-step linear multistep
methods for the integration of the Schr\"odinger equation. The new methods are
constructed by adopting a new methodology which improves the phase lag
characteristics by vanishing both the phase lag function and its first
derivatives at a specific frequency. This results in decreasing the sensitivity
of the integration method on the estimated frequency of the problem. The
efficiency of the new family of methods is proved via error analysis and

Ultraviolet Complete Quantum Gravity
An ultraviolet complete quantum gravity theory is formulated in which vertex
functions in Feynman graphs are entire functions and the propagating graviton
is described by a local, causal propagator. The cosmological constant problem

Indirect techniques in nuclear astrophysics. Asymptotic Normalization Coefficient and Trojan Horse
Owing to the presence of the Coulomb barrier at astrophysically relevant
kinetic energies it is very difficult, or sometimes impossible, to measure
astrophysical reaction rates in the laboratory. That is why different indirect
techniques are being used along with direct measurements. Here we address two
important indirect techniques, the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC)
and the Trojan Horse (TH) methods. We discuss the application of the ANC
technique for calculation of the astrophysical processes in the presence of
subthreshold bound states, in particular, two different mechanisms are
discussed: direct capture to the subthreshold state and capture to the
low-lying bound states through the subthreshold state, which plays the role of
the subthreshold resonance. The ANC technique can also be used to determine the
interference sign of the resonant and nonresonant (direct) terms of the
reaction amplitude. The TH method is unique indirect technique allowing one to
measure astrophysical rearrangement reactions down to astrophysically relevant
energies. We explain why there is no Coulomb barrier in the sub-process
amplitudes extracted from the TH reaction. The expressions for the TH amplitude

The mental health of university students in the United Kingdom
There are increasing concerns globally about the mental health of students (Kadison,& Digeronimo, 2004). In the UK, the actual incidence of mental disturbance is unknown, although university counselling services report increased referrals (Association of University & College Counselling, 2011). This study assesses the levels of mental illness in undergraduate students to examine whether widening participation in education has resulted in increases as hypothesized by the UK Royal College of Psychiatrists (2003, 2011). Patterns of disturbance across years are compared to identify where problems arise. Students (N = 1197) completed the General Health Questionnaire-28 either on day one at university or midway through the academic year for first, second and third year students. Rates of mental illness in students equalled those of the general population but only 5.1% were currently receiving treatment. Second year students reported the most significant increases in psychiatric symptoms. Factors contributing to the problem are discussed
Winnowing Wheat from Chaff: The Chunking GA
In this work, we investigate the ability of a Chunking GA (ChGA) to reduce the size of variable length chromosomes and control bloat. The ChGA consists of a standard genetic algorithm augmented by a communal building block memory system and associated memory chromosomes and operators. A new mxn MaxSum fitness function used for this work is also described. Results show that a ChGA equipped with memory capacity equal to or greater than the minimal size of an optimal solution naturally eliminates unexpressed genes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004
Low-energy excitations in the three-dimensional random-field Ising model
The random-field Ising model (RFIM), one of the basic models for quenched
disorder, can be studied numerically with the help of efficient ground-state
algorithms. In this study, we extend these algorithm by various methods in
order to analyze low-energy excitations for the three-dimensional RFIM with
Gaussian distributed disorder that appear in the form of clusters of connected
spins. We analyze several properties of these clusters. Our results support the
validity of the droplet-model description for the RFIM.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Constraining the dark energy dynamics with the cosmic microwave background bispectrum
We consider the influence of the dark energy dynamics at the onset of cosmic
acceleration on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) bispectrum, through the
weak lensing effect induced by structure formation. We study the line of sight
behavior of the contribution to the bispectrum signal at a given angular
multipole : we show that it is non-zero in a narrow interval centered at a
redshift satisfying the relation , where the
wavenumber corresponds to the scale entering the non-linear phase, and is
the cosmological comoving distance. The relevant redshift interval is in the
range 0.1\lsim z\lsim 2 for multipoles 1000\gsim\ell\gsim 100; the signal
amplitude, reflecting the perturbation dynamics, is a function of the
cosmological expansion rate at those epochs, probing the dark energy equation
of state redshift dependence independently on its present value. We provide a
worked example by considering tracking inverse power law and SUGRA Quintessence
scenarios, having sensibly different redshift dynamics and respecting all the
present observational constraints. For scenarios having the same present
equation of state, we find that the effect described above induces a projection
feature which makes the bispectra shifted by several tens of multipoles, about
10 times more than the corresponding effect on the ordinary CMB angular power

Charged-Particle Multiplicities in Charged-Current Neutrino-- and Anti-Neutrino--Nucleus Interactions
The CHORUS experiment, designed to search for
oscillations, consists of a nuclear emulsion target and electronic detectors.
In this paper, results on the production of charged particles in a small sample
of charged-current neutrino-- and anti-neutrino--nucleus interactions at high
energy are presented. For each event, the emission angle and the ionization
features of the charged particles produced in the interaction are recorded,
while the standard kinematic variables are reconstructed using the electronic
detectors. The average multiplicities for charged tracks, the pseudo-rapidity
distributions, the dispersion in the multiplicity of charged particles and the
KNO scaling are studied in different kinematical regions. A study of
quasi-elastic topologies performed for the first time in nuclear emulsions is
also reported. The results are presented in a form suitable for use in the
validation of Monte Carlo generators of neutrino--nucleus interactions.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure
Maternal distress and perceptions of infant development following extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and conventional ventilation for persistent pulmonary hypertension
Neurodevelopmental outcome and concurrent maternal distress were examined for infants who suffered persistent pulmonary hypertension at birth and were treated with either extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) ( n = 19) or conventional ventilation (CV) ( n = 15). Mothers were asked to complete inventories assessing their infant's (mean age 8.74 months) developmental growth as well as their own psychological health. Relevant sociodemographic and treatment parameters were also entered into the analysis. The results indicated that ECMO and CV infants did not differ on developmental indices and impairment rates were 15â23% respectively, similar to previous reports, in addition, ECMO and CV mothers did not differ in their reports of psychological distress. Correlational analyses revealed that length of treatment for ECMO but not CV infants significantly predicted developmental delay and maternal distress. For CV mothers, maternal distress was associated with the perception of delayed language. The results are discussed in terms of the limited morbidity associated with ECMO and CV interventions and the possible role of a âvulnerable child syndromeâ in understanding the maternal-infant relationship following ECMO therapy.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73367/1/j.1365-2214.1995.tb00410.x.pd
