Moving a Library Can Be Easy, but Planning and Project Management Is Key

    Get PDF
In the summer of 2007, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) received 48 million dollars to plan and build a new library. Planning for the moving of the collection began shortly thereafter. This paper details specific collections projects completed by UTC Library faculty and staff that resulted in a flawless move that took only 11 days to complete. The luxury of time to complete a collection inventory and accurate measurement was key, but so was selecting the right people for the project

COLD CASE INVESTIGATIONS WITHIN FAIRFAX COUNTY: TURNING THE LIABILITY OF TIME INTO AN ASSET

No department or individual involved in the investigation of homicides is ever going to have a 100% closure rate. Therefore, many departments will be faced with a situation where another homicide happens before they are finished handling the previous one. How does one manage these open cases; how often are they reviewed; and who is responsible once the assigned detective is either transferred or leaves the unit or department? Someone has to be able to answer questions from the family, media and anyone else who might inquire about the case. Based on the number of unsolved homicide cases within Fairfax County, the concept of a “Cold Case Squad” was explored. During January 1995, the Fairfax County Police Department implemented a Cold Case Squad consisting of one supervisor, three veteran detectives, two auxiliary police officers and one cadet. The Cold Case detectives inherited approximately 75 unsolved homicides which occurred in Fairfax County, Virginia, from 1964 through December 31, 1994. More than half of the unsolved homicides (42) have occurred in the past nine years. The hypothesis for this thesis was: The formulation of a Cold Case Squad would measurably reduce the number of unresolved homicides within Fairfax County. The primary evaluation factor for the thesis was the Cold Case Squad’s “close-ability” rate. The thesis identified and evaluated nine solvability factors utilized by the Cold Case Squad Supervisor. The solvability factors are considered when prioritizing case investigation, assigning personnel to an investigation and suspending investigate efforts. One of the goals for utilizing solvability factors is to develop a clear profile of cases with the most potential for close-ability. The study population for this thesis is the 42 unsolved homicides which have occurred in Fairfax County, Virginia, between January 1, 1986, and December 31, 1994. Solvability factor work sheets were completed and computated for the study population. The hypothesis has been proven as there is a measurable reduction in the number of unsolved homicides. From the study population, two cases have been closed by arrest, one case closed by exceptional means and one case is pending approval from the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to obtain arrest warrants. These four cases represent a 9.5% reduction of unsolved cases within the study population. A copy of this thesis was given to the Cold Case Squad Supervisor for review and application. It is hoped the research from this thesis will be applied to the Cold Case Squad so it will become more effective and continue to turn the liability of time into an asset

CAREER DEVELOPMENT FOR MUSIC TEACHERS THROUGH INTERNATIONAL DISTANCE DISTANCE-LEARNING MEDIA

New technologies have developed quickly during the last two decades, creating new opportunities and challenges for educational providers and their students. The means by which these have been met fall into two categories, exemplified here by case studies from two institutions. In the University of Reading, an existing distance-learning programme developed on traditional lines, was able to broaden its impact and the geographical constituency from which it recruits by incorporating e-Learning techniques into its means of delivery. By contrast, a new project at the University of São Paulo was initiated specifically to research and develop innovative distance-learning media in music education. The processes by which these two complementary developments arrived at their current position are presented in this article, along with a collective response to some of the new opportunities they jointly identify as a consequence of collaborating with one another in the future.

Mesenchyme homeobox 2 regulation of fetal endothelial progenitor cell function

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)In the United States, 10% of pregnancies are complicated by diabetes mellitus (DM). Intrauterine DM exposure can have long-lasting implications for the fetus, including cardiovascular morbidity. Previously, we showed that fetal endothelial colony forming cells (ECFCs) from DM pregnancies have decreased vessel-forming ability and increased senescence. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for this dysfunction remain largely unknown. The objective of this thesis was to understand how Mesenchyme Homeobox 2 (MEOX2) interacts with pathways that regulate cell cycle progression and migration, and how this interaction results in impaired vasculogenesis in DM exposed ECFCs. We tested the hypothesis that upregulated MEOX2 in DM-exposed ECFCs decreases network formation through impairments in senescence, cell cycle progression, migration, and adhesion. MEOX2 is a transcription factor which inhibits angiogenesis by upregulating cyclin dependent kinase inhibitors. Here, data show that nuclear MEOX2 is increased in DM-exposed ECFCs. Lentiviral-mediated overexpression of MEOX2 in control ECFCs increased network formation, altered cell cycle progression, increased senescence, and enhanced migration. In contrast, MEOX2-knockdown in DM-exposed ECFCs decreased network formation and migration, while cell cycle progression and senescence were unchanged. Adhesion and integrin expression defects were evaluated as mechanisms by which MEOX2 altered ECFC migration. While MEOX2-overexpression did not alter adhesion or cell surface integrin levels in control cells, MEOX2 overexpression in DM-exposed ECFCs resulted in an increase in α6 integrin surface expression. Similarly, MEOX2-knockdown in DM-exposed ECFCs did not alter adhesion, though did reduce α6 integrin surface expression and total cellular α6 mRNA and protein levels. Together, these data suggest that alterations in cell cycle progression and senescence are not responsible for the disrupted vasculogenesis of DM-exposed ECFCs. Importantly, these data suggest that altered migration may be a key mechanism involved and that altered cell surface levels of the α6 integrin may modify migratory capacity. Moreover, these data suggest that the α6 integrin may be a previously unrecognized transcriptional target of MEOX2. Ultimately, while initially believed to be maladaptive, these data suggest that increased nuclear MEOX2 in DM-exposed ECFCs may serve a protective role, enabling vessel formation despite exposure to a DM intrauterine environment
