As culturas produzidas nos dias atuais necessitam cada vez mais de herbicidas eficazes para o manejo e controle de plantas daninhas nos mais diversos sistemas produtivos integrados. Portanto, torna-se necessário soluções inovadoras que possibilitam o aumento da produtividade com pouco impacto ao agroecossistema. Influence of the Tungurahua eruption on the ice core records of Chimborazo, Ecuador
International audienceThe comparison of two shallow ice cores recovered in 1999 and 2000 from the same place on the Chimborazo summit glacier revealed the influence of the coincident Tungurahua volcanic eruption on their stable isotope and chemical records. The surface snow melting and water percolation induced from the ash deposition caused a preferential elution and re-localization of certain ionic species, while the stable isotope records were not affected. Additionally, the comparison of the ionic amount and some selected ion ratios preserved along the ice core column reports under which processes the chemical species are introduced in the snow pack, as snow flake condensation nuclei, by atmospheric scavenging or by dry deposition. This preliminary study is essential for the interpretation of the deep Chimborazo ice core, or for other sites where surrounding volcanic activity influences the glaciochemical records

1,2,6-thiadiazinones as novel narrow spectrum calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase 2 (CaMKK2) inhibitors
We demonstrate for the first time that 4H-1,2,6-thiadiazin-4-one (TDZ) can function as a chemotype for the design of ATP-competitive kinase inhibitors. Using insights from a co-crystal structure of a 3,5-bis(arylamino)-4H-1,2,6-thiadiazin-4-one bound to calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase 2 (CaMKK2), several analogues were identified with micromolar activity through targeted displacement of bound water molecules in the active site. Since the TDZ analogues showed reduced promiscuity compared to their 2,4-dianilinopyrimidine counter parts, they represent starting points for development of highly selective kinase inhibitors

From moths to caterpillars: Ideal conditions for Galleria mellonella rearing for in vivo microbiological studies.
ABSTRACT Galleria mellonella is a well-accepted insect model for the study of pathogen-host interactions and antimicrobial compounds. The main advantages of this model include the low cost of maintenance, the fast life cycle, the possibility of using a large number of caterpillars and the innate immune system, which is evolutionarily conserved relative to mammals. Because of these advantages, different research groups have been working to implement the rearing of G. mellonella in laboratory conditions. This protocol describes our experience in the rearing of G. mellonella caterpillars for experimental infection models and the influence of different artificial diets on developmental and physiological parameters. Here, we suggest a diet composition that benefits the life cycle of G. mellonella by accelerating the larval phase length and increasing the caterpillar weight. This diet also stimulated the immune system of G. mellonella by increasing the hemolymph volume and hemocyte concentration. In addition, our rearing protocol generated caterpillars that are more resistant to infection by Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. A standard G. mellonella rearing protocol is fundamental to minimize external influences on the results, and this simple and easy protocol can support researchers starting to rear G. mellonella

Molecular composition of organic aerosols in central Amazonia: An ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry study
The Amazon Basin plays key role in atmospheric chemistry, biodiversity and climate change. In this study we applied nanoelectrospray (nanoESI) ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHRMS) for the analysis of the organic fraction of PM aerosol samples collected during dry and wet seasons at a site in central Amazonia receiving background air masses, biomass burning and urban pollution. Comprehensive mass spectral data evaluation methods (e.g. Kendrick mass defect, Van Krevelen diagrams, carbon oxidation state and aromaticity equivalent) were used to identify compound classes and mass distributions of the detected species. Nitrogen-and/or sulfur-containing organic species contributed up to 60% of the total identified number of formulae. A large number of molecular formulae in organic aerosol (OA) were attributed to later-generation nitrogen-and sulfur-containing oxidation products, suggesting that OA composition is affected by biomass burning and other, potentially anthropogenic, sources. Isoprene-derived organosulfate (IEPOX-OS) was found to be the most dominant ion in most of the analysed samples and strongly followed the concentration trends of the gas-phase anthropogenic tracers confirming its mixed anthropogenic-biogenic origin. The presence of oxidised aromatic and nitro-aromatic compounds in the samples suggested a strong influence from biomass burning especially during the dry period. Aerosol samples from the dry period and under enhanced biomass burning conditions contained a large number of molecules with high carbon oxidation state and an increased number of aromatic compounds compared to that from the wet period. The results of this work demonstrate that the studied site is influenced not only by biogenic emissions from the forest but also by biomass burning and potentially other anthropogenic emissions from the neighbouring urban environments.Research at the University of Cambridge was supported by European Research Council grant no. 279405. Análise das condições de moradia das famílias de baixa renda do município de Campinas (SP).
Neste estudo, foram analisadas características do responsável familiar (RF) e dos domicílios das famílias pertencentes ao Cadastro Único (CadÚnico) do município de Campinas, para captar uma visão atual da realidade social das famílias de baixa renda. Foram utilizados os dados do CadÚnico para o município de Campinas, disponibilizados pela Secretaria Municipal de Assistência Social, Pessoa com Deficiência e Direitos Humanos (SMASDH). Foram consideradas variáveis do responsável familiar e da moradia. Os resultados demonstram que as famílias cadastradas no CadÚnico enfrentam condições socioeconômicas extremamente desfavoráveis: a renda média das famílias é de R 200,00 mensais; são majoritariamente chefiadas por mulheres (88%) e, na média, compostas por até três pessoas; 50% dispõem de somente 1 dormitório para 2 residentes; 96% dos RF indicaram que a moradia é particular permanente e 98% das moradias são feitas de alvenaria (indicadores positivos); 73% das famílias residem em moradias com piso de cerâmica e 24%, com piso de cimento; 15% vivem em residência sem medidor de energia elétrica. Nossos resultados fornecem evidências de que as famílias cadastradas no CadÚnico sobrevivem em situação econômica desfavorável, a qual afeta negativamente sua saúde física e mental. Essas famílias de baixa renda têm menor probabilidade de ter recursos ou resiliência para lidar com impactos negativos e maior probabilidade de viver em moradias com estruturas ineficientes.Evento online.
