On the population of remnant FRII radio galaxies and implications for radio source dynamics
The purpose of this work is two-fold: (1) to quantify the occurrence of
ultra-steep spectrum remnant FRII radio galaxies in a 74 MHz flux limited
sample, and (2) perform Monte-Carlo simulations of the population of active and
remnant FRII radio galaxies to confront models of remnant lobe evolution, and
provide guidance for further investigation of remnant radio galaxies. We find
that fewer than 2 of FRII radio galaxies with S Jy are
candidate ultra-steep spectrum remnants, where we define ultra-steep spectrum
as . Our Monte-Carlo simulations
demonstrate that models involving Sedov-like expansion in the remnant phase,
resulting in rapid adiabatic energy losses, are consistent with this upper
limit, and predict the existence of nearly twice as many remnants with normal
(not ultra-steep) spectra in the observed frequency range as there are
ultra-steep spectrum remnants. This model also predicts an ultra-steep remnant
fraction approaching 10 at redshifts . Importantly, this model
implies the lobes remain over-pressured with respect to the ambient medium well
after their active lifetime, in contrast with existing observational evidence
that many FRII radio galaxy lobes reach pressure equilibrium with the external
medium whilst still in the active phase. The predicted age distribution of
remnants is a steeply decreasing function of age. In other words young remnants
are expected to be much more common than old remnants in flux limited samples.
For this reason, incorporating higher frequency data GHz will be of

Who leaves and who stays? Retention and attrition in engineering education
At a time of high demand for engineering graduates, the mean graduation completion rate of engineering undergraduates in Australia has been identified as approximately 54% (with considerable variation across institutions and sectors). This proportion of non-completions has been viewed as an excessive loss to the qualified workforce of Australia. Broad brush, government-collected statistics do not, however, provide the level of detail required to understand who leaves, when and why they leave, and where they go. This paper reports on a pilot study undertaken to precede and inform final decisions on research design and methodology for a multi institutional project seeking to understand and reduce student attrition from engineering degrees across Australia. The aim of the project is to produce guidelines on curriculum formulation and delivery strategies to reduce attrition in engineering programs while meeting outcomes. The pilot study was conducted at an institution which has a relatively diverse range of students, a high proportion of whom study part time, and engineering degree structures incorporating traditional and internship-based degrees. Results from a cohort analysis, tracking pathways to completion or non-completion of the degree for the cohorts from two specific entry years will be presented. From this analysis, groups of students who "persisted over long periods", "switched to another degree" or "withdrew from the university" were identified and interviewed. Their experiences and stories, were an essential ingredient for a better understanding of the dynamics of retention/attrition and factors which required further questioning before proceeding with the multi institutional study. © 2009 Authors
Equity of Inpatient Health Care in Rural Tanzania:\ud A Population- and Facility-Based Survey
To explore the equity of utilization of inpatient health care at rural Tanzanian health centers through the use of a short wealth questionnaire.Methods: Patients admitted to four rural health centers in the Kigoma Region of Tanzania from May 2008 to May 2009 were surveyed about their illness, asset ownership and demographics. Principal component analysis was used to compare the wealth of the inpatients to the wealth of the region’s general population, using data from a previous population-based survey. Among inpatients, 15.3% were characterized as the most poor, 19.6% were characterized as very poor, 16.5% were characterized as poor, 18.9% were characterized as less poor, and 29.7% were characterized as the least poor. The wealth distribution of all inpatients (p < 0.0001), obstetric inpatients (p < 0.0001), other inpatients (p < 0.0001), and fee-exempt inpatients (p < 0.001) were significantly different than the wealth distribution in the community population, with poorer patients underrepresented among inpatients. The wealth distribution of pediatric inpatients (p = 0.2242) did not significantly differ from the population at large. The findings indicated that while current Tanzanian health financing policies may have improved access to health care for children under five, additional policies are needed to further close the equity gap, especially for obstetric inpatients.\u
LOFAR observations of 4C+19.44. On the discovery of low frequency spectral curvature in relativistic jet knots
We present the first LOFAR observations of the radio jet in the quasar
4C+19.44 (a.k.a. PKS 1354+19) obtained with the long baselines. The achieved
resolution is very well matched to that of archival Jansky Very Large Array
(JVLA) observations at higher radio frequencies as well as the archival X-ray
images obtained with {\it Chandra}. We found that, for several knots along the
jet, the radio flux densities measured at hundreds of MHz lie well below the
values estimated by extrapolating the GHz spectra. This clearly indicates the
presence of spectral curvature. Radio spectral curvature has been already
observed in different source classes and/or extended radio structures and it
has been often interpreted as due to intrinsic processes, as a curved particle
energy distribution, rather than absorption mechanisms ({ Razin-Tsytovich}
effect, free-free or synchrotron self absorption to name a few). Here we
discuss our results according to the scenario where particles undergo

Ratios of and Meson Decay Constants in Relativistic Quark Model
We calculate the ratios of and meson decay constants by applying the
variational method to the relativistic hamiltonian of the heavy meson. We adopt
the Gaussian and hydrogen-type trial wave functions, and use six different
potentials of the potential model. We obtain reliable results for the ratios,
which are similar for different trial wave functions and different potentials.
The obtained ratios show the deviation from the nonrelativistic scaling law,
and they are in a pretty good agreement with the results of the Lattice

Novel technique for monitoring the performance of the LAT instrument on board the GLAST satellite
The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) is an observatory designed
to perform gamma-ray astronomy in the energy range 20 MeV to 300 GeV, with
supporting measurements for gamma-ray bursts from 10 keV to 25 MeV. GLAST will
be launched at the end of 2007, opening a new and important window on a wide
variety of high energy astrophysical phenomena . The main instrument of GLAST
is the Large Area Telescope (LAT), which provides break-through high-energy
measurements using techniques typically used in particle detectors for collider
experiments. The LAT consists of 16 identical towers in a four-by-four grid,
each one containing a pair conversion tracker and a hodoscopic crystal
calorimeter, all covered by a segmented plastic scintillator anti-coincidence
shield. The scientific return of the instrument depends very much on how
accurately we know its performance, and how well we can monitor it and correct
potential problems promptly. We report on a novel technique that we are
developing to help in the characterization and monitoring of LAT by using the
power of classification trees to pinpoint in a short time potential problems in
the recorded data. The same technique could also be used to evaluate the effect

Heteroskedasticity testing through a comparison of Wald statistics
This paper shows that a test for heteroskedasticity within the context of classical linear regression can be based on the difference between Wald statistics in heteroskedasticity-robust and nonrobust forms. The test is asymptotically distributed under the null hypothesis of homoskedasticity as chi-squared with one degree of freedom. The power of the test is sensitive to the choice of parametric restriction used by the Wald statistics, so the supremum of a range of individual test statistics is proposed. Two versions of a supremum-based test are considered: the first version does not have a known asymptotic null distribution, so the bootstrap is employed to approximate its empirical distribution. The second version has a known asymptotic distribution and, in some cases, is asymptotically pivotal under the null. A simulation study illustrates the use and finite-sample performance of both versions of the test. In this study, the bootstrap is found to provide better size control than asymptotic critical values, namely with heavy-tailed, asymmetric distributions of the covariates. In addition, the use of well-known modifications of the heteroskedasticity consistent covariance matrix estimator of OLS coefficients is also found to benefit the tests’ overall behaviour.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
