    Improved Bond Strength of Cyanoacrylate Adhesives Through Nanostructured Chromium Adhesion Layers

    The performance of many consumer products suffers due to weak and inconsistent bonds formed to low surface energy polymer materials, such as polyolefin-based high-density polyethylene (HDPE), with adhesives, such as cyanoacrylate. In this letter, we present an industrially relevant means of increasing bond shear strength and consistency through vacuum metallization of chromium thin films and nanorods, using HDPE as a prototype material and cyanoacrylate as a prototype adhesive. For the as received HDPE surfaces, unmodified bond shear strength is shown to be only 0.20 MPa with a standard deviation of 14 %. When Cr metallization layers are added onto the HDPE at thicknesses of 50 nm or less, nanorod-structured coatings outperform continuous films and have a maximum bond shear strength of 0.96 MPa with a standard deviation of 7 %. When the metallization layer is greater than 50 nm thick, continuous films demonstrate greater performance than nanorod coatings and have a maximum shear strength of 1.03 MPa with a standard deviation of 6 %. Further, when the combination of surface roughening with P400 grit sandpaper and metallization is used, 100-nm-thick nanorod coatings show a tenfold increase in shear strength over the baseline, reaching a maximum of 2.03 MPa with a standard deviation of only 3 %. The substantial increase in shear strength through metallization, and the combination of roughening with metallization, may have wide-reaching implications in consumer products which utilize low surface energy plastics

    Artificial Intelligence in Government Services: A Systematic Literature Review

    The aim of this paper is to provide an overview on how artificial intelligence is shaping the digital era, in policy making and governmental terms. In doing so, it discloses new opportunities and discusses its implications to be considered by policy-makers. The research uses a systematic literature review, which includes more than one technique of data analysis in order to generate comprehensiveness and rich knowledge, we use: a bibliometric analysis and a content analysis. While artificial intelligence is identified as an extension of digital transformation, the results suggest the need to deepen scientific research in the fields of public administration, governmental law and business economics, areas where digital transformation still stands out from artificial intelligence.     Werewolf, there wolf : Variants in hairless associated with hypotrichia and roaning in the lykoi cat breed

Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.A variety of cat breeds have been developed via novelty selection on aesthetic, dermatological traits, such as coat colors and fur types. A recently developed breed, the lykoi (a.k.a. werewolf cat), was bred from cats with a sparse hair coat with roaning, implying full color and all white hairs. The lykoi phenotype is a form of hypotrichia, presenting as a significant reduction in the average numbers of follicles per hair follicle group as compared to domestic shorthair cats, a mild to severe perifollicular to mural lymphocytic infiltration in 77% of observed hair follicle groups, and the follicles are often miniaturized, dilated, and dysplastic. Whole genome sequencing was conducted on a single lykoi cat that was a cross between two independently ascertained lineages. Comparison to the 99 Lives dataset of 194 non‐lykoi cats suggested two variants in the cat homolog for Hairless (HR) (HR lysine demethylase and nuclear receptor corepressor) as candidate causal gene variants. The lykoi cat was a compound heterozygote for two loss of function variants in HR, an exon 3 c.1255_1256dupGT (chrB1:36040783), which should produce a stop codon at amino acid 420 (p.Gln420Serfs*100) and, an exon 18 c.3389insGACA (chrB1:36051555), which should produce a stop codon at amino acid position 1130 (p.Ser1130Argfs*29). Ascertainment of 14 additional cats from founder lineages from Canada, France and different areas of the USA identified four additional loss of function HR variants likely causing the highly similar phenotypic hair coat across the diverse cats. The novel variants in HR for cat hypotrichia can now be established between minor differences in the phenotypic presentations.Peer reviewe

    We develop the notion of a legitimacy tipping point to demonstrate how informal economy practices are being utilized by innovative sharing economy ventures to gain a competitive advantage that is subsequently leveraged to reconfigure formal institutional arrangements. Companies who are able to scale rapidly can afford to contravene regulations, provided they have public support. When they reach a certain size, in terms of investment and customer numbers, regulators are forced into a reactive position where novel business models are legitimized. This raises an important question for regulators and entrepreneurs as to whether subverting business regulation is being viewed as a viable source of competitive advantage by scaling firms

    Thermodynamics of Mixtures Containing Amines. XV. Liquid–Liquid Equilibria for Benzylamine + CH3(CH2)nCH3 (n = 8, 9, 10, 12, 14)

    Coexistence curves for the liquid−liquid equilibria (LLE) of 1-phenylmethanamine (benzylamine) + CH3(CH2)nCH3 (n = 8, 9, 10, 12, 14) have been determined using the critical opalescence method by means of a laser scattering technique. All of the LLE curves show an upper critical solution temperature (UCST), which increases with increasing n. For systems including a given n-alkane, the UCST decreases in the sequence aniline > 2-methylaniline (o-toluidine) > benzylamine > N-methylaniline > pyridine. This means that amine−amine interactions become weaker in the same order. Most of the DISQUAC interaction parameters for the aliphatic/amine (a,n) and aromatic/ amine (b,n) contacts previously determined for solutions with aniline, o-toluidine, or N-methylaniline have been used for the representation of the LLE data. Only the first dispersive interaction parameter of the (a,n) contact has been modified. The coordinates of the critical points are correctly represented by the model

    Digital Transformation in Higher Education Institutions: Between Myth and Reality

    Nowadays, there are several technological trends in the world which promote changes of focus in organizations. This fact, coupled with the globalisation of information and economies, leads to a transformation aimed at achieving greater organizational efficiency and leveraging available digital resources in order to shift organizational cultures towards incorporating and taking advantage of digital instruments and tools. Digital transformation is approached as a turning point that leverages new paradigms emerging in the digital world. It has led experts to rethink how an institution can remain competitive and visible while undergoing social transformation, maintaining its validity and staying sustainable over time. This process is important in technological development, which produces constant changes in order to attend to the needs of the social environment where it is occurring. Universities occupy an important place among the institutions facing digital transformation, as they should lead the cultural shift that it implies. The transition to new ways of executing critical mission processes and procedures in the institutions leveraging digital artefacts leads to the consideration of the design and definition of strategic organizational units dedicated to implementing meaningful and valuable technology solutions. However, this should also lead to the creation of a digital culture aligned with the dynamics of new technological ecosystems. Higher education institutions are no stranger to these challenges. Many are undergoing renewals and structural reviews of their administrative and academic processes. The improvements they make using new technologies stand to benefit both the university community and wider society, which are the central reasons for the existence of universities. In accordance with the above, higher education institutions should propose the following as a general objective: ‘to foster a community attuned to innovation in the University, through a digital transformation, where the advancement of technology and emerging trends maximize collaboration, active learning, research and creation, in a way that encourages interdisciplinary critical thinking in order to help to the sustainable development of society’. It is not a myth but a reality that higher education institutions, like many other organizations, are being affected by several social and technological global trends towards digitalisation. The digital transformation process is potentially disruptive and needs further study due to its impact on their constitution. Therefore, the researchers suggest developing a complete research program around this phenomenon, in which new spaces for evaluation, reflection, redesign of processes and design of proposals can be created. Thus, culture of innovation, through a digital transformation, becomes an institutional way of life learned, shared and transmitted both by directive bodies, at both academic and administrative levels of the university
