    Anthropometric data from launch and entry suited test subjects for the design of a recumbent seating system

    Returning space crews to Earth in a recumbent position requires the design of a new seating system. Current anthropometric data are based on measurements taken while the subjects were unsuited and sitting. To be most accurate, it is necessary to design by measurements of subjects in the launch and entry suit in a recumbent position. Since the design of the recumbent seating system must meet the requirements of both 5th percentile Japanese female and 95th percentile American male crew members, a delta is reported rather than absolute measurements of the test subjects. This delta is the difference in the measurements taken with the subjects unsuited and sitting and those taken with the subjects suited and recumbent. This delta, representative of the change due to the suit, can be added to the existing Man-Systems Integration Standards (NASA-STD-3000) anthropometric data to project the measurements for 5th percentile Japanese female and 95th percentile American male crew members. A delta accounting for the spinal elongation caused by prolonged exposures to microgravity is added as well. Both unpressurized and pressurized suit conditions are considered. Background information, the test protocol and procedure, analysis of the data, and recommendations are reported

    A note on the neutrality of profit taxes and tax compliance with imperfect detection

    In a tax-evasion model with profit tax, we reexamine and clarify the issues of neutrality and separability with imperfect detection of tax fraud. With this more realistic setting, we show that the profit tax is not necessarily neutral and the separability conclusion may not hold. Furthermore, the property of non-neutrality may coexist with that of separability or inseparability. However, in contrast to the traditional conclusion, raising the audit probability may reduce the tax compliance when the property of inseparability is present.

    Passive scalar mixing downstream of a synthetic jet in crossflow

    An experimental investigation on passive scalar mixing due to the interaction of a synthetic jet with a thermal boundary layer is presented. From velocity measurements, performed by particle image velocimetry, two jet behaviours were identified. For jet to crossflow velocity ratios less than 1.2, the velocity fluctuations due to the jet/crossflow interaction stayed close to the wall. At higher ratios, the fluctuations moved away from the wall. The thermal mixing was examined using laser induced fluorescence. During expulsion, the thickness of the downstream thermal boundary layer increased whilst the thermal boundary layer was annihilated immediately downstream of the jet during entrainment

    The field of physical therapy has had substantial growth this decade and is considered one of the best career choices. One reason for this growth is the implementation of physical therapy in new settings. Physical therapists are no longer restricted to the traditional hospitals and rehabilitation settings as choices. Today, physical therapists can choose to practice in more dynamic settings such as the public school system, sports acceleration and rehabilitation facilities, aqua-therapy, hippotherapy, and industrial facilities. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between personality traits and the practice settings for the University of North Dakota graduating class of 1995. In 1993, as junior students in the physical therapy program at the University of North Dakota, this class participated in a Myers-Briggs personality test. For this study, the 48 individuals from that class were sent a questionnaire to determine their current practice setting and years employed in that setting. Thirty-eight returned the survey for a response rate of 86.4%. Due to the small sample size, a nonparametric statistical analysis could not be performed; therefore, only descriptive trends were assessed. Primary results of the study indicated that the feelers and sensors gravitated toward the hospital setting, while the extrovert gravitated towards the private practice setting. This is similar to other allied health care professionals. Further conclusions could not be drawn due to the small sample size

The poem examines Blackness by expanding on historical Black movements in the mid-1900s that contributed to the mechanization of the Black body as a commodity through means of production. The poem uses the imagery of Black migration, lynching, evolution, mechanization, commodities, production, and death to bring forward the importance of identity and inner self-worth in a capitalistic society that benefits from the destruction of Black bodies

    Magnetic suspension and balance system advanced study, 1989 design

    The objectives are to experimentally confirm several advanced design concepts on the Magnetic Suspension and Balance Systems (MSBS). The advanced design concepts were identified as potential improvements by Madison Magnetics, Inc. (MMI) during 1984 and 1985 studies of an MSBS utilizing 14 external superconductive coils and a superconductive solenoid in an airplane test model suspended in a wind tunnel. This study confirmed several advanced design concepts on magnetic suspension and balance systems. The 1989 MSBS redesign is based on the results of these experiments. Savings of up to 30 percent in supporting magnet ampere meters and 50 percent in energy stored over the 1985 design were achieved
