First cosmology results using SNe Ia from the dark energy survey: analysis, systematic uncertainties, and validation

First cosmology results using type Ia supernovae from the Dark Energy Survey: constraints on cosmological parameters
We present the first cosmological parameter constraints using measurements of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (DES-SN). The analysis uses a subsample of 207 spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia from the first three years of DES-SN, combined with a low-redshift sample of 122 SNe from the literature. Our "DES-SN3YR" result from these 329 SNe Ia is based on a series of companion analyses and improvements covering SN Ia discovery, spectroscopic selection, photometry, calibration, distance bias corrections, and evaluation of systematic uncertainties. For a flat LCDM model we find a matter density Omega_m = 0.331 +_ 0.038. For a flat wCDM model, and combining our SN Ia constraints with those from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), we find a dark energy equation of state w = -0.978 +_ 0.059, and Omega_m = 0.321 +_ 0.018. For a flat w0waCDM model, and combining probes from SN Ia, CMB and baryon acoustic oscillations, we find w0 = -0.885 +_ 0.114 and wa = -0.387 +_ 0.430. These results are in agreement with a cosmological constant and with previous constraints using SNe Ia (Pantheon, JLA)
Observations of the High Redshift Universe
(Abridged) In these lectures aimed for non-specialists, I review progress in
understanding how galaxies form and evolve. Both the star formation history and
assembly of stellar mass can be empirically traced from redshifts z~6 to the
present, but how the various distant populations inter-relate and how stellar
assembly is regulated by feedback and environmental processes remains unclear.
I also discuss how these studies are being extended to locate and characterize
the earlier sources beyond z~6. Did early star-forming galaxies contribute
significantly to the reionization process and over what period did this occur?
Neither theory nor observations are well-developed in this frontier topic but
the first results presented here provide important guidance on how we will use

Effects of nutritional enhancement of live food organisms on growth and survival of barramundi, Lates calcarifer (Bloch), larvae
Larval and juvenile barramundi, Lates calcarifer (Bloch), were reared intensively on test diets comprising nutritionally supplemented and unsupplemented rotifers, Brachionus plicatilis Muller, and brine shrimp, Artemia salina L. Both growth and survival of barramundi larvae fed on nutritionally supplemented brine shrimp were superior to those of larvae fed on untreated brine shrimp. Barramundi larvae fed diets incorporating untreated brine shrimp exhibited a mortality syndrome which commenced from 20 to 30 days after hatching and resulted in almost total mortality within the next 10 days. Analyses of the proximate, fatty acid and amino acid composition of the live food organisms used in the test diets, and reference samples comprising barramundi egg yolk and extensively reared juvenile barramundi, suggest that this mortality syndrome was primarily associated with the fatty acid composition of the food organisms, particularly the relative amount of 20:5n-3 in the brine shrimp fed to the larvae. These results, and the work of other authors, indicate that there are two mortality syndromes which affect intensively cultured L. calcarifer larvae
