“Structures of light”. Structural morphologies as devices for capturing light

    Get PDF
The present paper would look at the principles of architectural composition as analytical distinction of parts, the idea of the structural fragment, the use of open forms and serial repetition, featured in modern and contemporary architecture. Given the possibilities of reinforced concrete structures, light penetrates into the building through the structural frame and shapes the negative-space of the load-bearing form (pattern of light). Moreover, the gap between enclosure and roofing system, the breaks in the walls, the disconnection at the angles in a masonry structure, become a powerful sources of light. The tectonic node shifts from being the robust part of the structure to a hiatus of light. Goals, criteria and methods of analysis of the case studies: In these monumental building, light is the former designing tool. By analyzing the most important historical architectures, the process of spatial design would show the importance of structural form in architecture and it could be used for contemporary approach. The structure bears the loads and creates "machines for capturing the light" at once. Partialized designs have been drawn and re-created with 3d printing technology. An exemplar list of the case studies is the following: - Matching separate structures: Hurva Synagogue L. I. Kahn, Casa della scherma by L. Moretti, Nelson-Atkins Museum by S. Holl. - Gaps between structural series: Kimbell Museum by L. I. Kahn, Padiglione Italia competition entry by F. Venezia, Museum of Architecture in Lisbon by Aires Mateus. - Tectonic hiatus: Hepworth gallery by D. Chipperfield, Palazzo dell’acqua e della luce by Albini and Gardella

Chapter Drone remote sensing for coastal habitats protection

    Get PDF
Growing beach tourist vocation of Lecce province has led to an increase human pressures along its coasts, often on habitats of conservation interest. Ever-increasing erosion phenomena of sandy shoreline constantly requires fast and effective monitoring activities assessing the conservation status of dunes and shoreline. Remote sensing via RPAS is proving useful to identify phenomena that act on a small scale and supporting and implementing protective measures with an adaptive management approach. This work consists of a protocol for monitoring dune cordons and nearby shorelines through RPAS

"Black Ovaries": An Uncommon Case of First Systemic Recurrence of Melanoma

Here we describe a rare case of a 48-year-old woman with a previous history of malignant melanoma (pT2a pathological stage, IB clinical stage) occurring about five years previously. She complained of abdominal pain and pelvic discomfort, diagnosed as a consequence of a bilateral ovarian solid masses completely occupying the recto-uterine space. She underwent laparotomy surgery with total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Gross examination of the excised material revealed an unusual grey-black bilateral ovarian tumor; a histopathological diagnosis of ovarian bilateral metastatic melanoma was made. Imaging study (CT/MRI) did not reveal metastasis in other zones of the body. Melanoma metastasis usually affects the skin, liver, brain and lungs, and rarely gynecological localizations. On the other hand, most bilateral ovarian tumors are comprised of serous carcinoma, mature teratoma and gastrointestinal carcinoma metastasis. Exceptionally, primary ovarian melanoma may arise in mature ovarian cystic teratomas

Peritoneal Tuberculosis Mimicking Ovarian Cancer: Gynecologic Ultrasound Evaluation with Histopathological Confirmation

    Get PDF
Peritoneal tuberculosis (TBP) is a very rare condition, accounting for about 1–2% of all tuberculosis cases. The diagnosis of TBP can be easily mistaken for advanced ovarian cancer (AOC) or peritoneal carcinoma because of overlapping laboratory and clinical findings. We reported the ultrasound characteristics of a case of TBP in a 67-year-old woman who presented to our institute with a 1-month history of intermittent lower abdominal pain, fever, and asthenia. Overall, 20 biopsy-retrieved specimen histopathological features were suggestive of peritoneal tuberculosis. Gynecologic ultrasound revealed increased adnexa with multiple nodular formations spread across the surface, suggestive of caseous nodules. Although this is a rare occurrence, clinicians should consider TBP as a differential diagnosis of ovarian or peritoneal cancer

Pilomatrixcarcinoma of the Foot: A New Localization of an Extremely Rare Adnexal Tumour

    Get PDF
Pilomatrixcarcinoma is a very rare follicular neoplasm that shows matrical differentiation. The majority of these lesions originate de novo, while only a few cases of transformation of pilomatricoma (calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe) have been described in the literature. The neoplasm affects mostly middle-aged males with a male-to-female ratio of 3–4:1. The most common localizations are the face, head, trunk and extremites, though there are a few reports of pilomatrixcarcinoma of the eyelid, eyebrow, axilla and clitorid. Here, we describe the first case of a pilomatrixcarcinoma on the anterolateral surface of the first toe of the left foot of an 83-year-old patient, which developed in less than six months and led to amputation of the distal phalanx. We report a brief review of the current literature with particular emphasis on histopathological features useful for diagnosis

Every little helps : an investigation of frequency biases in comparative judgments

    Get PDF
Intuitive statistical inferential judgments involve the estimation of statistical properties of samples of information, such as the mean or variance. Prior research has shown that human judges are generally good at making unbiased estimates of sample properties. However, a series of recent applied consumer research experiments demonstrated a systematic bias in comparative judgments of item distributions in which the individual items are paired across those distributions, for example comparing the prices in two stores selling the same items. When the two distributions have the same mean, the distribution with the higher number of items that are smaller in magnitude than the equivalent item in the other distribution is typically judged to be the smaller of the two distributions: a frequency bias. In a series of experiments, the research in this thesis provides a robust demonstration of the frequency bias and explores possible explanations for the bias. A comparison between simultaneous and sequential presentation of information demonstrates that the frequency bias cannot solely be explained by the salience of the frequency cue. A novel web-based experiment, in which information was sampled incidentally from the environment and a naturalistic task was used to elicit comparative judgments, showed that the frequency effect persists in an ecologically-valid context. A systematic comparison between alternative cognitive models of the judgment process supports an explanation in which items are recalled from memory and compared in a pair-wise fashion, meaning the frequency bias may be found in a wide range of other judgment tasks and domains, which would have significant implications for our understanding of intuitive comparative judgments.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceUniversity of Warwick. Spitz Nevus with Features of Clark Nevus, So-Called SPARK Nevus: Case Series Presentation with Emphasis on Cytological and Histological Features

    Get PDF
Background: SPARK nevus represents a little-known and characterized entity, with few case series available in the literature. Methods and results: we present a case series of 12 patients (6 F and 6 M) between January 2005 and December 2020 and conduct a review of the current literature. Ten articles were selected on the basis of the adopted inclusion criteria and the PRISMA guidelines. Conclusions: The definition of histopathological and dermoscopic criteria are important to allow for an agreement to be reached among dermopathologists, and for the development of a consensus on higher case studies. To our knowledge, there are not many case series in the literature, and ours is part of the attempt to increase the knowledge of an entity that remains little-known and characterized

A Unique Case of the Transformation of a Hepatic Leiomyoma into Leiomyosarcoma with Pancreatic Metastases: Review of the Literature with Case Presentation

    Get PDF
Primary hepatic leiomyoma (PHL) is a rare entity, with very few cases reported in the literature. Even more rarely, until now practically undescribed, is the transformation of a hepatic leiomyoma into leiomyosarcoma with pancreatic metastases. Here, we report a single case of the progression of PHL in primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma, with clinical–surgical and histopathological features, and we conducted a review of the literature of related cases that can be found

Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma: Case Presentation with Review of Literature

    Get PDF
Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma is a rare neoplasm with an intermediate malignant potential, that mostly occurs in the subcutis and features varying proportions of epithelioid, ovoid and spindle cells in a nodular and syncytial growth pattern, with hemorrhagic pseudovascular spaces. Here, we report the clinical case of a 68-year-old man who presented with AFH on the right arm; the disease relapsed a few years after surgical excision. We also conduct a brief review of the literature, focusing on the biological and genetic characteristics and the differential diagnosis from other more or less similar entities
