    Biological control of peach fungal pathogens by commercial products and indigenous yeasts.

    The potential use of the commercial biocontrol products Serenade (Bacillus subtilis QST-713) and Trichodex (Trichoderma harzianum Rifai strain T39) to inhibit the postharvest pathogenic molds Penicillium crustosum and Mucor circinelloides was investigated. Both products exhibited antagonistic activity in vitro against the pathogens, reducing their growth at different levels. In addition, epiphytic yeasts isolated from peaches were identified as Candida maltosa, Pichia fermentans, and Pichia kluyveri by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism of internal transcribed spacer regions and screened for antagonistic activity against the same molds. The efficacy of biocontrol in vitro was dependent on the concentration of the yeast cells. Optimal yeast concentrations were above 10(7) CFU ml(-1). However, C. maltosa and P. fermentans were more effective than P. kluyveri in inhibiting molds. The exclusion of antifungal metabolite production and direct competition for nutrients or space with the pathogens was proposed as the mechanism of biocontrol. Application of biocontrol agents directly on artificially wounded peach fruits significantly reduced the incidence of mold rot during storage at 20 degrees C

    Adsorption of triblock copolymers and their homopolymers at laponite clay/solution interface. Role played by the copolymer nature

    The adsorption thermodynamics of copolymers, based on ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide ( PO) units, at the laponite (RD) clay/liquid interface was determined at 298 K. The copolymer nature was tuned at molecular level by changing the hydrophilicity, the architecture and the molecular weight (Mw) keeping constant the EO/PO ratio. Polyethylene (PEGs) and polypropylene (PPGs) glycols with varying Mw and their mixture were also investigated to discriminate the role of the EO and the PO segments in the adsorption process. Enthalpies of transfer of RD, at fixed concentration, from water to the aqueous macromolecule solutions as functions of the macromolecule molality were determined. They were treated quantitatively by means of a model based on two equilibria: ( 1) one-to-one binding between the macromolecule and the site on the solid and ( 2) two-to-one binding following which one macromolecule interacts with another one adsorbed onto the solid. The good agreement between the equilibrium constants obtained from calorimetry and those determined from kinetic experiments conformed the reliability of the experimental and theoretical approaches. Almost all of the systems investigated are highlighted by the one-to-one binding; the L35 and 10R5 systems present both equilibria. The insights provided by the thermodynamics of adsorption of their homopolymers onto RD were fruitful in obtaining detailed information on the nature of the forces involved between RD and the copolymers. The data obtained in the present work clearly evidenced that for comparable polymer Mw, PPG is more suitable in building up a steric barrier around the RD particles and, indeed, exhibits several advantages and no drawbacks. Moreover, the parent copolymers may properly functionalize the RD surface by exploiting both their high affinity to the solid surface and the ability to self-assemble onto it as L35 and 10R5 clearly showed

    Safe Management of Pressure Equipment Contained in Wind Turbines

    Renewable energies are the backbone of the energy transition. Among these energies, in recent years wind energy (together with solar) has largely established itself thanks to technological innovation and the production of increasingly performing wind turbines (for example the modern Enercon E-126 turbine can produce up to 7 MW). The wind turbines contain pressure equipment (hydraulic accumulators), the use of which can pose risks to the safety and health of the personnel assigned to supervise and maintain the wind turbines themselves, if they are not adequately managed. The hydraulic accumulators, installed in the nacelle of the wind turbine, are part of the hydraulic system (equipped with an oil tank) which regulates the pitch of the wind blades (i.e. the speed of the blades) and for the functioning of the braking system. The aforementioned accumulators can withstand a maximum operating pressure exceeding 300 bar. For such equipment, in Italy, the manager of the wind turbine, after correct installation and the relative risk analysis, must request commissioning and the first periodic check at INAIL (National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work). Following the authors' experience in this field, the purpose of this article is to give wind turbine managers an organic approach for the correct management of pressure equipment, in order to prevent the risk of accidents, starting from the construction phase of the devices up to phase of their use

    Risk Assessment of Lpg Release Scenarios

    Accidents involving accidental release of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) can cause very serious damage to people and structures. Such as, for example, the derailment of a freight train carrying LPG, which occurred in Viareggio (Italy) on 29 June 2009 or the accident involving the fixed tank installed at the end user, which occurred in Gravedona (Italy) on 11 July 2019. The danger of LPG derives from its flammability and its tendency to form a dense cloud of vapour which is dispersed in atmosphere, even at a significant distance from the release, which if ignited can explode. In the present work, authors give indications for risk assessment of LPG release scenarios. The evaluation is obtained by combining the probability of the occurrence of the scenarios with the relative class of consequences of the dangerous phenomena (effects on the human target and effects on the environment target). The combination obtained through a risk matrix has the purpose of identifying the accident scenarios with the greatest impact. From matrix scenarios, we can deduce: - Phenomena with a low frequency and/or consequence that probably have no concrete effect on the damage; - Phenomena which will certainly lead to the development of real damage (these will have to be re-analysed in order to insert additional safety systems); -Phenomena of medium effect, which will probably have real effects on the damage and will be selected for further study. These scenarios for LPG depots, which fall under the activities at risk of major accident, are the basis of correct territorial planning and internal and external emergency planning; also consider the Italian Directive of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers - Civil Protection Department of 7 December 2022.     Environmental monitoring and building simulation application to Vasari Corridor: Preliminary results

    Abstract The Vasari Corridor has been used in the past and present for storage and presentation of works of art which require control of microclimate for optimal preservation. To this end, it was started the collaboration between the Uffizi Gallery and Laboratory of Environmental Physic of the Florence University for the environmental monitoring of microclimatic parameters, of which this work presents the preliminary results. It's was also created a three-dimensional model of the building in the stretch from the Uffizi Gallery to Ponte Vecchio, for the dynamic simulation of the energy behavior of the building validated by on-field measured values

    FESTIVAL: heterogeneous testbed federation across Europe and Japan

    FESTIVAL is an H2020 EU-Japan collaborative project that aims to federate heterogeneous testbeds, making them interoperable and building an “Experimentation as a Service” (EaaS) model. Going beyond the traditional nature of experimental facilities, related to computational and networking large scale infrastructures, FESTIVAL testbeds have heterogeneous nature and in order to be federated they have been clustered in four categories: “Open Data” (i.e. open datasets), “IoT” (i.e. sensors and actuators), “IT” (i.e. computational resources) and “Living Labs” (i.e. people). Considering that every testbed category provides specific resources, the main challenge for FESTIVAL is to develop a platform that can allow experimenters to access very different assets in an homogeneous and transparent way, supporting them in the phases of the experiments. The FESTIVAL architecture, based on a multi-level federation approach, proposes a solution to this problem providing also a set of functionalities to manage and monitor the experiments. FESTIVAL tools, also, include the possibility to access FIWAREGeneric Enablers allowing to deploy predefined components to address specific needs in the experimentation (e.g. data analysis, big data management etc.).     Speciation Studies of Bifunctional 3-Hydroxy-4-Pyridinone Ligands in the Presence of Zn2+ at Different Ionic Strengths and Temperatures

    The acid-base properties of two bifunctional 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone ligands and their chelating capacity towards Zn2+, an essential bio-metal cation, were investigated in NaCl aqueous solutions by potentiometric, UV-Vis spectrophotometric, and 1H NMR spectroscopic titrations, carried out at 0.15 ≤ I/mol -1 ≤ 1.00 and 288.15 ≤ T/K ≤ 310.15. A study at I = 0.15 mol L-1 and T = 298.15 K was also performed for other three Zn2+/Lz- systems, with ligands belonging to the same family of compounds. The processing of experimental data allowed the determination of protonation and stability constants, which showed accordance with the data obtained from the different analytical techniques used, and with those reported in the literature for the same class of compounds. ESI-MS spectrometric measurements provided support for the formation of the different Zn2+/ligand species, while computational molecular simulations allowed information to be gained on the metal-ligand coordination. The dependence on ionic strength and the temperature of equilibrium constants were investigated by means of the extended Debye-Hückel model, the classical specific ion interaction theory, and the van't Hoff equations, respectively

    Abstract Purpose To investigate the effectiveness of the T-score values provided by Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry (REMS) in the identification of patients at risk for incident osteoporotic fractures. Methods A population of Caucasian women (30–90 years), enrolled from 2013 to 2016, underwent dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and REMS scans at axial sites. The incidence of fragility fractures was assessed during a follow-up period up to 5 years. Afterwards, patients with and without incident fractures were stratified in two age-matched groups with a 1: 2 proportion (Group F' and Group NF', respectively). The performance of REMS T-score in discriminating between the two groups was quantitatively assessed and compared with DXA. Results 1516 patients were enrolled and 1370 completed the follow-up (mean ± SD: 3.7 ± 0.8 years; range: 1.9–5.0 years). Fracture incidence was 14.0%. Age-matched groups included 175 fractured patients and 350 non-fractured ones, respectively (median age 70.2 [interquartile range: 61.0–73.3] and 67.3 [65.4–69.8] years, p-value ns). The groups resulted also balanced for height, weight and BMI (p-values ns). As expected, the differences in REMS T-score (for vertebral site, −2.9 [−3.6 to −1.9] in Group F', −2.2 [−2.9 to −1.2] in Group NF') and DXA T-score (−2.8 [−3.3 to −1.9] in Group F', −2.2 [−2.9 to −1.4] in Group NF') were statistically significant (p-value Conclusions REMS T-score resulted an effective predictor for the risk of incident fragility fractures in a population-based sample of female subjects, representing a promising parameter to enhance osteoporosis diagnosis in the clinical routine

    Colorectal surgery in Italy during the Covid19 outbreak: a survey from the iCral study group

    Background The COVID19 pandemic had a deep impact on healthcare facilities in Italy, with profound reorganization of surgical activities. The Italian ColoRectal Anastomotic Leakage (iCral) study group collecting 43 Italian surgical centers experienced in colorectal surgery from multiple regions performed a quick survey to make a snapshot of the current situation. Methods A 25-items questionnaire was sent to the 43 principal investigators of the iCral study group, with questions regard- ing qualitative and quantitative aspects of the surgical activity before and after the COVID19 outbreak. Results Two-thirds of the centers were involved in the treatment of COVID19 cases. Intensive care units (ICU) beds were partially or totally reallocated for the treatment of COVID19 cases in 72% of the hospitals. Elective colorectal surgery for malignancy was stopped or delayed in nearly 30% of the centers, with less than 20% of them still scheduling elective colo- rectal resections for frail and comorbid patients needing postoperative ICU care. A significant reduction of the number of colorectal resections during the time span from January to March 2020 was recorded, with significant delay in treatment in more than 50% of the centers. Discussion Our survey confirms that COVID19 outbreak is severely affecting the activity of colorectal surgery centers partici- pating to iCral study group. This could impact the activity of surgical centers for many months after the end of the emergency
