    Stereotomy, Sustainable Construction and Didactics. Case study: a new Museum for Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019

    The paper describes the students’ works, which included posters and physical models, were the partial outcomes of the current 3rd year design studio, led by Prof Giuseppe Fallacara and taught with the support of Maurizio Barberio and Micaela Colella, both Ph.D. students at the Polytechnic of Bari. The text illustrate an experimental teaching/learning approach which Giuseppe tested during the design studio. This approach was inspired by the concepts of ‘Experiential Learning’ and ‘Flipped Classroom’, consisting in a series of “cooperative classes”, where tutors and students interacted and discussed in an absolute spirit of intellectual equality. The goal was to simulate the activity of a large architecture practice, involved in the design of a public building, which generally requires the contribution of a large number of architects and designers. The students were given a brief for a new museum and multipurpose centre in Matera, Italy, which was recently nominated European Capital of Culture 2019. They had to deliver a design proposal, a rapid prototyped model and a short video

    PPI for a sustainable economy: sustainable supply chain management in the agri-food sector

    The aim of this study is to offer an analysis on the agri-food logistics chains so as to guarantee the greatest spread of sustainability practices in the management of the entire supply chain. The use of management and marketing tools and of innovative legal and economic institutes, also in the agri-food sector, is fundamental to guaranteeing an increasingly ‘cleaner’ agriculture. However, the joint use of these tools still does not seem to have been fully exploited. In this sense, the analysis of the ‘FiLO – Filiera Logistica e Organizzazione’ project, which aimed to create a network of companies through a European partnership for innovation, and which has the purpose of providing companies in the agri-food supply chain with a high level of methodological and organisational innovation, would like to trace guidelines and reflections relating to the development of the territories through the use of public procurement for innovation.Il PPI per un’economia sostenibile: riflessioni sulla gestione sostenibile della filiera agroalimentare Lo scopo di questo studio è quello di offrire un’analisi sulle filiere logistiche agroalimentari, al fine di suggerire l’implementazione di pratiche di sostenibilità nella gestione dell’intera filiera.     Ephemeral Museums in Pandemic Era: Bari and the Museo Provinciale that Was There, that Has Been and Has Never Been

    Abstract The proposal introduces the theme of the communicative resilience of exhibitions during the Pandemic Era. On March 7, 2020, Italy and its museums, as well as the countless exhibitions housed in their rooms, were closed leaving hundreds, perhaps thousands, of works without the public: from the paintings of Raphael (Rome, Scuderie del Quirinale), to the tables of the Griffoni Polyptych assembled after three hundred years (Bologna, Palazzo Fava), to the statues of Canova (Rome, Palazzo Braschi), to the Sant'Antonio by Antonio Vivarini and to the San Felice in the chair by Lorenzo Lotto chased by Bernard Berenson in his Apulian 'pilgrimages' (Bari, Palazzo Ateneo). Indeed, the latter is the exhibition to which particular attention is paid here. The spaces of the ancient Museum have come back to life with the exhibition "Il Museo che non c'è. Arte, collezionismo, gusto antiquario nel Palazzo degli Studi di Bari 1875-1928". The exhibition involved lenders institutions such as Villa I Tatti - The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, the Central State Archive in Rome, the Pinacoteca of Bari 'Corrado Giaquinto' and several others. The exhibition in Bari was inaugurated on February 28th. After the first five days only the exhibition was closed for the advance of COVID 19 virus. In the 'great hall' - as the main space of the ancient Provincial Museum was called - everything remained suspended and perfectly finished: showcases, exhibitors, paintings, statues, clay and stone art objects. However, there was no longer the possibility of letting people, visitors enter. We said that it would have been wonderful to be said that it would have been wonderful to be able to reopen it at least 'virtually'. And so we did, with an immersive and advanced teaching perspective

    Oral self-injuries: clinical findings in a series of 19 patients

    Objectives: Self-injury (SI) is defined as a behavioral disturbance consisting of a deliberate harm to one’s own body without suicidal intent, it is not uncommon and ranges in severity from simple nail-biting to more extreme forms of self-mutilation. The head neck region may be the target of such lesions. SI is associated with several medical conditions, of which it can represent the first clinical sign. Aim of this paper is to describe a series of oral SI, giving special emphasis to the clinical findings, etiology and the management of lesions. Material and Methods: A total of 19 patients with oral SI were prospectively examined; attention was paid to the occurrence and characterization of oral lesions. The management of the lesion also varied depending on the patient medical history, on the etiology of the psychiatric behavior, and on the severity, frequency, and method of inflicting injury. Periodic examinations were performed (after two weeks, three months and six months) and registered. Results: All the patients healed gradually and healing was conditioned by the disease underlying. The treatment consisted of behavior modification in 11 cases, pharmacological treatment in 11 cases, psychotherapy in 2 cases, mouth guard in 9 cases, surgery in 2 cases, extractions in 1 case. Conclusions: Oral SI are uncommon in the clinical practice. They may be associated with a known disease or may be the consequence of this, but often they may be the first sign of a psychiatric disorder

    A Novel Skin-Stretch Haptic Device for Intuitive Control of Robotic Prostheses and Avatars

    Without proprioception, i.e., the intrinsic capability of a body to perceive its own limb position, completing daily life activities would require constant visual attention and it would be challenging or even impossible. This situation is similar to the one experienced after limb amputation and in robotic tele-operation, where the natural sensory-motor loop is broken. While some promising solutions based on skin stretch sensory substitution have been proposed to restore tactile properties in these conditions, there is still room for enhancing the intuitiveness of stimulus delivery and integration of haptic feedback devices within user's body. To contribute to this goal, here, we propose a wearable device based on skin stretch stimulation, the Stretch-Pro, which can provide proprioceptive information on artificial hand aperture. This system can be suitably integrated in a prosthetic socket or can be easily worn by a user controlling remote robots. The system can imitate the stretching of the skin that would naturally occur on the intact limb, when it is used to accomplish motor tasks. Two versions of the system are presented, with one and two actuators, respectively, which deliver the stretch stimulus in different ways. Experiments with able-bodied participants and a preliminary test with one prosthesis user are reported. Results suggest that Stretch-Pro could be a viable solution to convey proprioceptive cues to upper limb prosthesis users, opening promising perspectives for tele-robotics applications

The III International and XV National edition will be a chance to discuss clinical conditions which are unusual, rare, or difficult to define. Many consolidated national and international research groups will be involved in the debate and discussion through special guest lecturers, academic dissertations, single clinical case presentations, posters, and degree thesis discussions.     Global Earthing System: Can Buried Metallic Structures Significantly Modify the Ground Potential Profile?

    Global earthing systems (GESs), which are created by the interconnection of local earthing systems, should guarantee the absence of dangerous touch voltages. According to international standards, one of the reasons for this safety characteristic of GESs is that medium-voltage and low-voltage grounding systems form a quasi-equipotential area. Typical examples of GESs are in city centers due to the high number of interconnected grounding systems in the area. For this reason, in addition to ground grids, other metallic parts with different primary functions shall be also considered, e.g., water and gas pipes, tramway tracks, and building foundations can modify the electric potential distribution in the area. In this paper, a model based on the Maxwell's subareas method (MaSM) is used to evaluate how buried metallic parts, which are not intentionally connected to ground grids, modify the electric potential on the soil surface. First, the MaSM model is validated with experimental measurements on a simple electrode configuration. The measured voltages are compared with the MaSM results and with the results obtained with a finite-element method model simulated with COMSOL Multiphysics. Then, the simulations are carried out on a realistic urban test case

    Ground Resistance of Buried Metallic Parts in Urban Areas: an Extensive Measurement Campaign

    In urban and industrial areas, a relevant presence of buried metallic objects (e.g., gas and water pipes, etc.) can be detected. Usually, these elements are imagined as widespread meshed metallic grids in a good contact with the soil. In the last years, an arising interest on their role in the identification of a global earthing system has been expressed by the scientific community. Unfortunately, the geometrical and electrical properties of this kind of buried metallic parts cannot be provided by any documentations. This is mostly due to the fact that no trustworthy schemes are provided, as the management of these metallic parts is responsibility of different companies, which have installed them during several years. In order to characterize the buried metallic elements with reference to the electrical safety issue, the main quantity of interest is their resistance to earth. With this aim, a field measurement campaign was organized and the resistance to earth of more than 800 metallic objects has been evaluated through a simplified measurement protocol.
