Emotion Detection Using Noninvasive Low Cost Sensors

Emotion recognition from biometrics is relevant to a wide range of application domains, including healthcare. Existing approaches usually adopt multi-electrodes sensors that could be expensive or uncomfortable to be used in real-life situations. In this study, we investigate whether we can reliably recognize high vs. low emotional valence and arousal by relying on noninvasive low cost EEG, EMG, and GSR sensors. We report the results of an empirical study involving 19 subjects. We achieve state-of-the- art classification performance for both valence and arousal even in a cross-subject classification setting, which eliminates the need for individual training and tuning of classification models.Comment: To appear in Proceedings of ACII 2017, the Seventh International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction, San Antonio, TX, USA, Oct. 23-26, 201

    Recognizing Developers' Emotions while Programming

Developers experience a wide range of emotions during programming tasks, which may have an impact on job performance. In this paper, we present an empirical study aimed at (i) investigating the link between emotion and progress, (ii) understanding the triggers for developers' emotions and the strategies to deal with negative ones, (iii) identifying the minimal set of non-invasive biometric sensors for emotion recognition during programming task. Results confirm previous findings about the relation between emotions and perceived productivity. Furthermore, we show that developers' emotions can be reliably recognized using only a wristband capturing the electrodermal activity and heart-related metrics.Comment: Accepted for publication at ICSE2020 Technical Trac

Ancient DNA from speleothems: opportunity or challenge?

Ancient environmental DNA retrieved from sedimentary records (sedaDNA) can complement fossil-morphological approaches for characterizing Quaternary biodiversity changes. PCR-based DNA metabarcoding is so far the most widely used method in environmental DNA studies, including sedaDNA. However, degradation of ancient DNA and potential contamination, together with the PCR amplification drawbacks, have to be carefully considered. Here we tested this approach on speleothems from an Alpine cave that, according to a previous palynomorphological study, have shown to contain abundant pollen grains. This offers a unique opportunity for comparing the two methods and, indirectly, trying to validate DNA-based results. The plant taxa identified by sedaDNA are fewer than those by pollen analysis, and success rate of PCR replicates is low. Despite extensive work performed following best practice for sedaDNA, our results are suboptimal and accompanied by a non-negligible uncertainty. Our preliminary data seem to indicate that paleoenvironmental DNA may be isolated from speleothems, but the intrinsic weakness of PCR-based metabarcoding poses a challenge to its exploitation. We suggest that newly developed methods such as hybridization capture, being free from PCR drawbacks and offering the opportunity to directly assess aDNA authenticity, may overcome these limitations, allowing a proper exploitation of speleothems as biological archive

Chronic disease and feeling of burden. An observational study in family caregivers of patients with different neurological diseases

    Get PDF
The present study compares the sociodemographic characteristics of three groups of family caregivers of patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Dementia (D), and it assesses whether the type of neurological disease influences the level of feeling of burden in caregivers. In order to achieve this aim, a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Caregiver Burden scale iwere administered to 128 family caregivers (of which 35 were assistants of TEC patients, 38 of patients with MS and 55 of D) All of them lived in a large urban center and surroundings, and belonged to middle socio-economic sectors of society. The results show that the type of the patient's neurological pathology affects the level of feeling of burden experienced by family caregivers. In relation socio-demographic profiles, the three groups of caregivers are soleles differentiated with respect to the bond of kinship with the ill relative. The results of the present study supports the hypothesis that sustains the association between the type of neurological disease and the feeling of burden on family caregiver as an emotional manifestation of stress, and provides empirical evidence for the Lazarus and Folkman's Transactional Stress Theory. Further analysis will be made in order to study the association between the demographic variable kinship bond, and the feeling of burden experienced by family caregiver of patients with neurological diseasesFil: Feldberg, Carolina. From a humanist vision, it aims to evaluate the role played by the experience of hope in the social behavior of the older adult. It was used a cross-sectional descriptive correlational design. It were administered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Test Hope-Hopelessness and the Activities Inventory, to a not probabilistic-accidental sample of 150 self-reliance older adults, living in a large urban center of the Argentina Republic. The results from the MANOVA indicated that, with the exception of the cultural-educational activities that involve a higher educational level that was not presented by the majority, the older adults with high levels of hope, compared with those with low-levels, were more involved in other activities, especially in social and spiritual ones. The results are justified in part by the approaches of a positive psychology and the personal strength, and enriches those obtained in other studies on the topic in the field of social psychology of aging.Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas 0109/9

VisAhoi: Towards a Library to Generate and Integrate Visualization Onboarding Using High-level Visualization Grammars

Visualization onboarding supports users in reading, interpreting, and extracting information from visual data representations. General-purpose onboarding tools and libraries are applicable for explaining a wide range of graphical user interfaces but cannot handle specific visualization requirements. This paper describes a first step towards developing an onboarding library called VisAhoi, which is easy to integrate, extend, semi-automate, reuse, and customize. VisAhoi supports the creation of onboarding elements for different visualization types and datasets. We demonstrate how to extract and describe onboarding instructions using three well-known high-level descriptive visualization grammars - Vega-Lite, Plotly.js, and ECharts. We show the applicability of our library by performing two usage scenarios that describe the integration of VisAhoi into a VA tool for the analysis of high-throughput screening (HTS) data and, second, into a Flourish template to provide an authoring tool for data journalists for a treemap visualization. We provide a supplementary website that demonstrates the applicability of VisAhoi to various visualizations, including a bar chart, a horizon graph, a change matrix or heatmap, a scatterplot, and a treemap visualization
