Pre-Service Physical Education Teachersâ Perceptions of Anticipated Challenges and Needs during Teacher Education Programs
Given that teacher dropout is an issue for beginning teachers, it is important to be proactive in order to retain teachers within the profession. Physical Education pre-service teachersâ education programs represent a crucial part of their professional development in preparing them to face the challenges that often explain retirement, especially studentsâ motivation. Authors recognize the importance of considering pre-service teachersâ needs during teacher education programs and their concerns about the challenges to be faced once they start teaching (Richards et al., 2013). Using a qualitative approach, this study aims to: (1) identify pre-service Physical Education teachersâ perceptions of anticipated challenges in general, (2) identify the specific challenges they anticipate aboutsupporting studentsâ motivation and (3) describe how they can be prepared to support studentsâ motivation. Participants consisted of 18 pre-service Physical Education teachers (Mage = 25; SD = 3.61 years) from French-language universities in Quebec (Canada). Four focus groups were conducted, and data were analyzed consistent with the four steps suggested by Boutin (2007). Results indicate that the main challenges anticipated by pre-service Physical Education teachers are classroom management and studentsâ lack of motivation. In terms of supporting studentsâ motivation, five specific challenges were highlighted: (1) student heterogeneity, (2) proposal of learning activities to support motivation, (3) student engagement, (4) management of disengaged students, and (5) gender differences. As for their needs during teacher education program, participants wished to learn how to plan motivational strategies, be given more opportunities to practice, and discuss how to implement these strategies. Les rĂ©sultats, analysĂ©s conformĂ©ment aux quatre Ă©tapes suggĂ©rĂ©es par Boutin (2007), indiquent que les dĂ©fis anticipĂ©s sont principalement la gestion de classe et le manque de motivation des Ă©lĂšves. En ce qui concerne le soutien de la motivation, cinq dĂ©fis ont Ă©tĂ© relevĂ©s : 1) l'hĂ©tĂ©rogĂ©nĂ©itĂ© des Ă©lĂšves, 2) lâapprentissage d'activitĂ©s soutenant la motivation, 3) l'engagement des Ă©lĂšves, 4) la gestion des Ă©lĂšves dĂ©sengagĂ©s et 5) les diffĂ©rences entre les sexes. Trends in excess mortality in follicular lymphoma at a population level.
BACKGROUND: Since the 1990s and since the development of humanised monoclonal antibodies in 1998, the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma has undergone profound changes. Follicular lymphoma (FL) was the first to benefit from this treatment, and several clinical trials have shown a significant improvement in overall survival, but little information is available at a population level. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to estimate changes in FL-specific mortality at a population level, with an appropriate methodology. METHODS: Two French retrospective population-based studies on FL were conducted, one from 1995 to 2004, in 1477 patients, and one from 1995 to 2010, in 451 patients. Trends in excess mortality rates (EMRs) according to age, sex, Ann Arbor stage and year of diagnosis were evaluated using the flexible model of Remontet et al. RESULTS: Trends in the EMR differed according to age at diagnosis and was higher in advanced stage (III, IV) in patients older than 65 yr. The EMR decreased linearly from 1995 to 2010. This decrease was more marked for advanced stages. CONCLUSION: FL-specific mortality decreased over the years of diagnosis, and the difference according to the lymphoma stage diminished in more recent years. However, progress in the management of FL was not able to erase age-related differences
