    Production and characterization of activated carbon from wood wastes

    Cedarwood (Cedrela Angustifolia) and teak (Tectona Grandis) woods are typically used for furniture manufacture because they have high durability, are light and easy to work. During these manufacturing process, large amount of these wastes is generated causing disposal environmental problems. In this paper, the residual wastes (sawdust) of Cedar (C) and Teak (T) are transformed into an activated material. The chemical composition of both biomass (C and T) was determinate by TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis). Activated materials were characterized in surface area following the BET (Brunauer, Emmett and Teller) method, morphology using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and to know their functional groups a FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) analysis was done. Their adsorption capacity was evaluated by removal of Methylene Blue (MB) and Congo Red (CR) from aqueous solutions. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd

    Dyes removal from water using low cost absorbents

    In this study, the removal capacity of low cost adsorbents during the adsorption of Methylene Blue (MB) and Congo Red (CR) at different concentrations (50 and 100mg•L-1) was evaluated. These adsorbents were produced from wood wastes (cedar and teak) by chemical activation (ZnCl2). Both studied materials, Activated Cedar (AC) and activated teak (AT) showed a good fit of their experimental data to the pseudo second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherms. The maximum adsorption capacities for AC were 2000.0 and 444.4mg•g-1 for MB and CR, respectively, while for AT, maximum adsorption capacities of 1052.6 and 86.4mg•g-1 were found for MB and CR, respectively. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd

    Identificación y descripción de procesos reales en la universidad EAFIT bajo la perspectiva de sistemas dinámicos

    Este trabajo está enfocado hacia el estudio de los sistemas dinámicos en la universidad EAFIT, a partir de visitas realizadas a los laboratorios de la universidad, haciendo una breve descripción de máquinas y procesos bajo la teoría de los sistemas dinámicos, teniendo en cuenta las características más importantes de un sistema dinámico como lo son: entrada, salidas, posibles perturbaciones. Dejando así un importante apoyo para quienes después se puedan interesar tanto en describir como llegar a un posible control de algunos de los procesos, dada la necesidad en la universidad por personas interesadas en este tipo de estudios, pues en las visitas realizadas a dichos laboratorios se pudo observar la falta de interés tanto de los estudiantes como de la misma universidad para realizar un mejor estudio de los procesos, viendo así como muchos de los procesos no son desarrollados de la mejor manera. Hecha la descripción de los procesos, se procederá a un estudio mucho más detallado de dos de estos procesos reales empezando con la modelación y simulación del mismo, bajo la teoría de los sistemas lineales usando como herramienta de simulación MATLAB SIMULINK

    A Comparison of Two Shallow Water Models with Non-Conforming Adaptive Grids: classical tests

    In an effort to study the applicability of adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) techniques to atmospheric models an interpolation-based spectral element shallow water model on a cubed-sphere grid is compared to a block-structured finite volume method in latitude-longitude geometry. Both models utilize a non-conforming adaptation approach which doubles the resolution at fine-coarse mesh interfaces. The underlying AMR libraries are quad-tree based and ensure that neighboring regions can only differ by one refinement level. The models are compared via selected test cases from a standard test suite for the shallow water equations. They include the advection of a cosine bell, a steady-state geostrophic flow, a flow over an idealized mountain and a Rossby-Haurwitz wave. Both static and dynamics adaptations are evaluated which reveal the strengths and weaknesses of the AMR techniques. Overall, the AMR simulations show that both models successfully place static and dynamic adaptations in local regions without requiring a fine grid in the global domain. The adaptive grids reliably track features of interests without visible distortions or noise at mesh interfaces.
