Obra ressenyada: Josetxo BERIAIN, El sujeto transgresor (y transgredido): Modernidad, religión, utopía y terror. Barcelona: Anthropos, 2011.Obra ressenyada: Joseba ZULAIKA, Terrorism : The self-fulfilling prophecy.

The beauty of the mammalian vascular system

    Get PDF
Beauty is a characteristic of objects that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure. In nature, aesthetic appreciation thereof has given rise to the mathematical search for good series (e.g. the Fibonacci series) and proportions (e.g. the Golden proportion) as important elements of beauty. In 1928 the mathematician George David Birkhoff introduced a formula for aesthetic measurement of an object. Birkhoff equation defines the aesthetic value as the amount of order divided by the complexity of the product. These two features can be measured easily in poetry, music, painting, architecture, etc. In the fine arts, it is the artist who manipulates both these features, but how does nature manage order and complexity in living organisms or their parts? Here we show how Birkhoff equation, applied to the mammalian vascular system of eight representative animals, results in new insights into the organization of the animal vascular system. We found that order and complexity are highly correlated in the mammalian vascular system (_R^2^_=0.9511). Accordingly, in nature both features are not independently managed in the manner of artists. We found significant differences among the Birkhoff aesthetic values in the mammalian arterial system, whereas no such differences exist in the venous system. We anticipate our approach to be useful in the study of morphogenesis and evolution of tree-like structures, employing the Birkhoff aesthetic value as a simple tool for conducting such studies

A hermeneutical review of the internalist tradition in the philosophy of sport

    Get PDF
In this paper, we make a hermeneutical analysis of the prevalent tradition in the philosophy of sport, that of internalism. To do so, we identify the prejudices that guide the internalist conception of sport, namely: the Platonic-Analytic prejudice introduced by Suits, who is one of the forefathers of the internalist approach. Then, we critically analyze four consequences of following such a prejudice: (a) unknowingly reduces reality; (b) generates a sugar-coated view of sport; (c) the idea of physical excellence is fuzzy; and (d) misguided because it generally leads to an unjustified and problematic leap from the descriptive analysis of the sporting phenomenon to the setting of normative requirements about how to practice sport

The influence of maritime spatial planning on the development of marine renewable energies in Portugal and Spain: legal challenges and opportunities

    Get PDF
The objective of this study is to analyse, from a legal point of view, the influence of the transposition of Marine Spatial Planning Directive into both Spanish and Portuguese domestic laws on the development of marine renewable energies in both countries. This article concludes that the Portuguese legal system is more favourable for the development of marine renewable energies than the Spanish legal regime, since the former establishes a more flexible planning system, sets criteria for the prioritisation of marine uses, incorporates trade-off mechanisms, introduces an electronic single-window system and regulates a pilot zone. These measures can help streamline licensing processes, avoid and resolve conflicts with other sea users, and adapt planning instruments to the rapid development of new marine renewable technologies. However, both legal regimes lack specific legal mechanisms aimed at offering effective protection of the marine environment against negative effects arising from the installation of such devices. Similarly, there is a lack of coordination between maritime spatial planning instruments and land planning instruments, and between the Central Government and the autonomous regions. This may hinder the installation of marine renewable energies. This study has implications in relation to the EU integrated marine policy aimed at achieving a balance between blue growth and the conservation of the marine environment, as well as an inter-administrative coordination improvement in decision-making.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. Morphometrics as a robust tool for disambiguation in plant taxonomy: the case of Lactuca livida, a commonly accepted but never delimited taxon

    Get PDF
An important goal of taxonomy is to clarify the identity of ambiguous taxa. Since lineage divergence usually involves ecological shifts that are associated with plant morphology, we propose that searching for fixed, non-overlapping morphological characters and specific associations of features should be the first task in disambiguation. We applied this idea in an analysis of the taxonomic identity of Lactuca livida, an Iberian endemic relative of L. virosa that, despite an extremely imprecise delimitation, is usually recognized in standard floras and germplasm banks. We analysed 24 possible diagnostic characters across the Iberian Peninsula, drawn from related taxonomic literature. No discontinuities in frequency variability distribution characters were found, even in two bimodal quantitative characters: leaf lobation and number of florets per capitulum. There were no notable patterns of association among characters, and the PCA/PCoA score plots did not show any distinctive groupings. Leaf lobation followed a significant geographic pattern, but there was no effective segregation of leaf shapes. We conclude that the variability found is symplesiomorphic, as it is present throughout the Serriola group of Lactuca, to which L. virosa belongs. The analyses, together with previous biological knowledge, indicates that Lactuca livida should be considered a synonym of L. virosa

Spherological sport hermeneutics: on the impacto f Sloterdijk’s work in the philosophy of sport

    Get PDF
Lately, there has been a shift toward hermeneutics in the philosophy of sport. In other places, we have argued that sport hermeneutics can help us go beyond the dominant internalist paradigm in the philosophy of sport. Sport philosophers Ron Welters and Kenneth Aggerholm have drawn on Peter Sloterdijk’s work, especially on his book You must change your life to explore the limits of the internalist paradigm. In this paper, we present and analyze Welters’ and Aggerholm’s interpretation of Sloterdijk work, which we take to be too narrow. Then, we provide a broader interpretation of Sloterdijk’s philosophy. In doing so, we lay the ground for the hermeneutic study of sport
