The recent development and performance of ethical investments

    Get PDF
In this chapter, we assess the recent development and performance of ethical investments around the world. Ethical investments include both socially responsible investments (following Environmental, Social and Governance criteria) and faith-based investments (following religious principles). After presenting the development of each type of funds in a historical context, we analyse their ethical screening process, highlighting similarities and differences across funds and regions. This leads us to investigate their characteristics in terms of return and risk, and finally evaluate their historical performance using various risk-adjusted performance measures on a small sample of US funds. Hence we are able to not only compare the performance of each fund with each other and with traditional investments, but also assess their relative resilience to the 2007-08 financial crisis

XAS Study of the High Pressure Behaviour of Quartzlike Compounds

EXAFS spectroscopy experiments have been carried out on quartz-like GaAsO4 and AlAsO4 at high pressure and room temperature. It has been shown that these materials exhibit two structural phase transitions; the first transition to a high pressure crystalline form occurs at 9 GPa and is reversible upon decompression, whereas the second transition occurs at higher pressures and is irreversible. In GaAsO4, EXAFS measurements agree with the predicted transition from four- to six-fold coordination of oxygen atoms around the cations, but the two local coordination transformations are not dissociated; in fact, both As and Ga atoms exhibit a coordination change at the onset of the first phase transition, the rate of transformation being significantly higher for Ga atoms. In both cases, the average bond length increases very rapidly with pressure thus yielding the first compression stage after the transition. In the second stage, the average bond lengths increase slowly, ultimately reaching six-fold coordination above 28 GPa and 24 GPa for As and Ga respectively. The behaviour of the As K-edge EXAFS is the same for both compounds, and enables us to link the behaviour of Ga and Al atoms. The local transformations are well described and a direct link with phosphate berlinites seems timely.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX2e, J. de Physique (in press

End-to-end adaptation scheme for ubiquitous remote experimentation

Remote experimentation is an effective e-learning paradigm for supporting hands-on education using laboratory equipment at distance. The current trend is to enable remote experimentation in mobile and ubiquitous learning. In such a context, the remote experimentation software should enable effective telemonitoring and teleoperation, no matter the kind of device used to access the equipment. It should also be sufficiently lenient so as to handle the rapidly evolving wireless and mobile communication environment. While the current Internet bandwidth allows remote experimentation to work flawlessly on fixed connections such as LANs, mobile users suffer from both the versatile nature of wireless communications and the limitation of the mobile devices. These conditions impose that the remote experimentation software should integrate adaptation features. For effective ubiquitous remote experimentation, it should ideally be guaranteed that the information representing the state of the remote equipment is rendered (to the end user) at the same pace at which it has been acquired, yet possibly at the cost of a somewhat minimal time delay between the acquisition and rendering phases. In this respect, an end-to-end adaptation scheme is proposed that explicitly handles the inherent variability of the connection and the versatility of the mobile devices considered in ubiquitous remote experimentation. Instead of relying on a stochastic approach, the proposed adaptation scheme relies on a deterministic mass-balance equivalence model. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptation scheme is demonstrated in critical conditions corresponding to remote experimentation carried out using a PDA over a Bluetooth lin

Association between bacterial vaginosis and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective: Bacterial vaginosis (BV), the most common vaginal disorder among women of reproductive age, has been suggested as co-factor in the development of cervical cancer. Previous studies examining the relationship between BV and cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN) provided inconsistent and conflicting results. The aim of this study is to clarify the association between these two conditions. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to summarize published literature on the association between BV and cervical pre-cancerous lesions. An extensive search of electronic databases Medline (Pubmed) and Web of Science was performed. The key words 'bacterial vaginosis' and 'bacterial infections and vaginitis' were used in combination with 'cervical intraepithelial neoplasia', 'squamous intraepithelial lesions', 'cervical lesions', 'cervical dysplasia', and 'cervical screening'. Eligible studies required a clear description of diagnostic methods used for detecting both BV and cervical precancerous lesions. Publications were included if they either reported odds ratios (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) representing the magnitude of association between these two conditions, or presented data that allowed calculation of the OR. Results: Out of 329 articles, 17 cross-sectional and 2 incidence studies were selected. In addition, two studies conducted in The Netherlands, using the national KOPAC system, were retained. After testing for heterogeneity and publication bias, meta-analysis and meta-regression were performed, using a random effects model. Although heterogeneity among studies was high (chi(2) = 164.7, p < 0.01, I-2 = 88.5), a positive association between BV and cervical pre-cancerous lesions was found, with an overall estimated odds ratio of 1.51 (95% CI, 1.24-1.83). Meta-regression analysis could not detect a significant difference between studies based on BV diagnosis, CIN diagnosis or study population. Conclusions: Although most studies were cross-sectional and heterogeneity was high, this meta-analysis confirms a connection between BV and CIN
