The case for the development and use of "ecologically valid" measures of executive function in experimental and clinical neuropsychology
This article considers the scientific process whereby new and better clinical tests of executive function might be developed, and what form they might take. We argue that many of the traditional tests of executive function most commonly in use (e.g., the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test; Stroop) are adaptations of procedures that emerged almost coincidentally from conceptual and experimental frameworks far removed from those currently in favour, and that the prolongation of their use has been encouraged by a sustained period of concentration on “construct-driven” experimentation in neuropsychology. This resulted from the special theoretical demands made by the field of executive function, but was not a necessary consequence, and may not even have been a useful one. Whilst useful, these tests may not therefore be optimal for their purpose. We consider as an alternative approach a function-led development programme which in principle could yield tasks better suited to the concerns of the clinician because of the transparency afforded by increased “representativeness” and “generalisability.” We further argue that the requirement of such a programme to represent the interaction between the individual and situational context might also provide useful constraints for purely experimental investigations. Preparedness for use of the rapid result HIV self-test by gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM): a mixed methods exploratory study among MSM and those involved in HIV prevention and care
Objectives:
The aim of the study was to explore preparedness for the HIV self-test among men who have sex with men (MSM) and those involved in HIV prevention and care.
Methods:
A mixed methods exploratory research design was employed, detailing awareness and willingness to use the self-test and the perceived barriers and facilitators to implementation. Quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis were completed in parallel. Descriptive and inferential analysis of cross-sectional bar-based survey data collected from MSM through a self-completed questionnaire and oral fluid specimen collection (n = 999) was combined with qualitative, thematic, analysis of data collected through 12 expert focus groups (n = 55) consisting of gay men, National Health Service (NHS) staff, community organizations, entrepreneurs and activists. Findings were subsequently combined and assessed for synergies.
Results:
Among MSM, self-test awareness was moderate (55%). Greater awareness was associated with increased educational attainment [adjusted odds ratio 1.51; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.00–2.30; P = 0.05] and previous history of sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing (adjusted odds ratio 1.63; 95% CI 1.11–2.39; P = 0.01). Willingness to use the test was high (89%) and associated with meeting sexual partners online (unadjusted odds ratio 1.96; 95% CI 1.31–2.94; P < 0.001). Experts highlighted the overall acceptability of self-testing; it was understood as convenient, discreet, accessible, and with a low burden to services. However, some ambivalence towards self-testing was reported; it could reduce opportunities to engage with wider services, wider health issues and the determinants of risk.
Conclusions:
Self-testing represents an opportunity to reduce barriers to HIV testing and enhance prevention and access to care. Levels of awareness are moderate but willingness to use is high. Self-testing may amplify health inequalities
A Geometry of the Generations

Risk, Resilience, and Smoking in a National, Probability Sample of Sexual and Gender Minority Adults, 2017, USA
Background. There are well-documented inequities in smoking between sexual and gender minority (SGM; e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender [LGBT]) and straight and cisgender people. However, there is less information about risk for and resilience against smoking among SGM people. Such information is critical for understanding etiology and developing interventions. Aims. To conduct a within-group assessment of risks and resiliencies relating to smoking status. Method. In 2017, we conducted a cross-sectional telephone survey with a national, probability-based sample of SGM adults (N = 453). We assessed theory-informed risks (adverse childhood events, substance use–oriented social environment, mental distress, stigma, discrimination, social isolation, and identity concealment) and resiliencies (advertising skepticism, identity centrality, social support, and SGM community participation). We applied survey weights, standardized predictor variables, and fit logistic regression models predicting smoking status. We stratified by age and SGM identity. Results. Patterns of risk and resilience differ by age and identity. Effects were consistently in the same direction for all groups for participating in substance use–oriented social environments, pointing to a potential risk factor for all groups. Advertising skepticism and having people you can talk to about being LGBTQ were potential protective factors. Discussion. Intervention development should address risk and resilience that differs by SGM identity. Additionally, our findings suggest interventionists should consider theoretical frameworks beyond minority stress. Conclusion. While much of the literature has focused on the role of stress from stigma and discrimination in tobacco use, addressing social norms and bolstering protective factors may also be important in SGM-targeted interventions
Knowledge politics and new converging technologies: a social epistemological perspective
The “new converging technologies” refers to the prospect of advancing the human condition by the integrated study and application of nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology and the cognitive sciences - or “NBIC”. In recent years, it has loomed large, albeit with somewhat different emphases, in national science policy agendas throughout the world. This article considers the political and intellectual sources - both historical and contemporary - of the converging technologies agenda. Underlying it is a fluid conception of humanity that is captured by the ethically challenging notion of “enhancing evolution”
Aalenian to Cenomanian Radiolaria of the Bermeja Complex (Puerto Rico) and Pacific origin of radiolarites on the Caribbean Plate
The study of the radiolarian ribbon chert is a key in determining the
origins of associated Mesozoic oceanic terranes and may help to achieve
a general agreement regarding the basic principles on the evolution of
the Caribbean Plate. The Bermeja Complex of Puerto Rico, which contains
serpentinized peridotite, altered basalt, amphibolite, and chert
(Mariquita Chert Formation), is one of these crucial oceanic terranes.
The radiolarian biochronology presented in this work is mainly based by
correlation on the biozonations of Baumgartner et al. (1995) and
O'Dogherty (1994) and indicates an early Middle Jurassic to early Late
Cretaceous (late Bajocian-early Callovian to late early Albian-early
middle Cenomanian) age. The illustrated assemblages contain about 120
species, of which one is new (Pantanellium karinae), and belonging to
about 50 genera. A review of the previous radiolarian published works on
the Mariquita Chert Formation and the results of this study suggest that
this formation ranges in age from Middle Jurassic to early Late
Cretaceous (late Aalenian to early-middle Cenomanian) and also reveal a
possible feature of the Bermeja Complex, which is the younging of
radiolarian cherts from north to south, evoking a polarity of accretion.
On the basis of a currently exhaustive inventory of the radiolarite
facies s.s. on the Caribbean Plate, a re-examination of the regional
distribution of Middle Jurassic sediments associated with oceanic crust,
and a paleoceanographic argumentation on the water currents, we come to
the conclusion that the radiolarite and associated Mesozoic oceanic
terranes of the Caribbean Plate are of Pacific origin. Eventually, a
discussion on the origin of the cherts of the Mariquita Formation
illustrated by Middle Jurassic to middle Cretaceous geodynamic models of
the Pacific and Caribbean realms bring up the possibility that the rocks
of the Bermeja Complex are remnants of two different oceans
Standard Model baryogenesis through four-fermion operators in braneworlds
We study a new baryogenesis scenario in a class of braneworld models with low
fundamental scale, which typically have difficulty with baryogenesis. The
scenario is characterized by its minimal nature: the field content is that of
the Standard Model and all interactions consistent with the gauge symmetry are
admitted. Baryon number is violated via a dimension-6 proton decay operator,
suppressed today by the mechanism of quark-lepton separation in extra
dimensions; we assume that this operator was unsuppressed in the early Universe
due to a time-dependent quark-lepton separation. The source of CP violation is
the CKM matrix, in combination with the dimension-6 operators. We find that
almost independently of cosmology, sufficient baryogenesis is nearly impossible
in such a scenario if the fundamental scale is above 100 TeV, as required by an
unsuppressed neutron-antineutron oscillation operator. The only exception
producing sufficient baryon asymmetry is a scenario involving

Maximal Neutrino Mixing from a Minimal Flavor Symmetry
We study a number of models, based on a non-Abelian discrete group, that
successfully reproduce the simple and predictive Yukawa textures usually
associated with U(2) theories of flavor. These models allow for solutions to
the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems that do not require altering
successful predictions for the charged fermions or introducing sterile
neutrinos. Although Yukawa matrices are hierarchical in the models we consider,
the mixing between second- and third-generation neutrinos is naturally large.
We first present a quantitative analysis of a minimal model proposed in earlier
work, consisting of a global fit to fermion masses and mixing angles, including
the most important renormalization group effects. We then propose two new
variant models: The first reproduces all important features of the SU(5)xU(2)
unified theory with neither SU(5) nor U(2). The second demonstrates that
discrete subgroups of SU(2) can be used in constructing viable supersymmetric
theories of flavor without scalar universality even though SU(2) by itself

An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics
For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types
