Cluster phases of membrane proteins
A physical scenario accounting for the existence of size-limited
submicrometric domains in cell membranes is proposed. It is based on the
numerical investigation of the counterpart, in lipidic membranes where proteins
are diffusing, of the recently discovered cluster phases in colloidal
suspensions. I demonstrate that the interactions between proteins, namely
short-range attraction and longer-range repulsion, make possible the existence
of stable small clusters. The consequences are explored in terms of membrane
organization and diffusion properties. The connection with lipid rafts is
discussed and the apparent protein diffusion coefficient as a function of their
concentration is analyzed.Comment: 5 pages - enhanced versio
Stability analysis for the background equations for inflation with dissipation and in a viscous radiation bath
The effects of bulk viscosity are examined for inflationary dynamics in which
dissipation and thermalization are present. A complete stability analysis is
done for the background inflaton evolution equations, which includes both
inflaton dissipation and radiation bulk viscous effects. Three representative
approaches of bulk viscous irreversible thermodynamics are analyzed: the Eckart
noncausal theory, the linear and causal theory of Israel-Stewart and a more
recent nonlinear and causal bulk viscous theory. It is found that the causal
theories allow for larger bulk viscosities before encountering an instability
in comparison to the noncausal Eckart theory. It is also shown that the causal
theories tend to suppress the radiation production due to bulk viscous
pressure, because of the presence of relaxation effects implicit in these
theories. Bulk viscosity coefficients derived from quantum field theory are
applied to warm inflation model building and an analysis is made of the effects
to the duration of inflation. The treatment of bulk pressure would also be
relevant to the reheating phase after inflation in cold inflation dynamics and
during the radiation dominated regime, although very little work in both areas
has been done, the methodology developed in this paper could be extended to
apply to these other problems.Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures, Published version JCA
Multiple shifts and fractional integration in the us and uk unemployment rates
This paper analyses the long-run behaviour of the US and UK unemployment rates by testing for possibly fractional orders of integration and multiple shifts using a sample of over 100 annual observations. The results show that the orders of integration are higher than 0 in both series, which implies long memory. If we assume that the underlying disturbances are white noise, the values are higher than 0.5, i.e., nonstationary. However, if the disturbances are autocorrelated, the orders of integration are in the interval (0, 0.5), implying stationarity and mean-reverting behaviour. Moreover, when multiple shifts are taken into account, unemployment is more persistent in the US than in the UK, implying the need for stronger policy action in the former to bring unemployment back to its original level
The first confirmation of V-type asteroids among the Mars crosser population
The Mars crossing region constitutes a path to deliver asteroids from the
Inner Main Belt to the Earth crossing space. While both the Inner Main Belt and
the population of Earth crossing asteroids contains a significant fraction of
asteroids belonging to the V taxonomic class, only two of such V-type asteroids
has been detected in the Mars crossing region up to now. In this work, we
searched for asteroids belonging to the V class among the population of Mars
crossing asteroids, in order to support alternative paths to the delivery of
this bodies into the Earth crossing region. We selected 18 candidate V-type
asteroids in the Mars crossing region using observations contained in the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey Moving Objects Catalog. Then, we observed 4 of these
candidates to take their visible spectra using the Southern Astrophysical
Research Telescope (SOAR). We also performed the numerical simulation of the
orbital evolution of the observed asteroids. We confirmed that 3 of the
observed asteroids belong to the V class, and one of these may follow a path
that drives it to an Earth collision in some tens of million years
Taxonomy of asteroid families among the Jupiter Trojans: Comparison between spectroscopic data and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey colors
We present a comparative analysis of the spectral slope and color
distributions of Jupiter Trojans, with particular attention to asteroid
families. We use a sample of data from the Moving Object Catalogue of the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey, together with spectra obtained from several surveys. A
first sample of 349 observations, corresponding to 250 Trojan asteroids, were
extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and we also extracted from the
literature a second sample of 91 spectra, corresponding to 71 Trojans. The
spectral slopes were computed by means of a least-squares fit to a straight
line of the fluxes obtained from the Sloan observations in the first sample,
and of the rebinned spectra in the second sample. In both cases the reflectance
fluxes/spectra were renormalized to 1 at 6230 . We found that the
distribution of spectral slopes among Trojan asteroids shows a bimodality.
About 2/3 of the objects have reddish slopes compatible with D-type asteroids,
while the remaining bodies show less reddish colors compatible with the P-type
and C-type classifications. The members of asteroid families also show a
bimodal distribution with a very slight predominance of D-type asteroids, but
the background is clearly dominated by the D-types. The L4 and L5 swarms show
different distributions of spectral slopes, and bimodality is only observed in
L4. These differences can be attributed to the asteroid families since the
backgraound asteroids show the same slope distribtuions in both swarms. The
analysis of individual families indicates that the families in L5 are
taxonomically homogeneous, but in L4 they show a mixture of taxonomic types. We
discuss a few scenarios that might help to interpret these results.Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 table
Crossing the phantom divide in an interacting generalized Chaplygin gas
Unified generalized Chaplygin gas models assuming an interaction between dark
energy and dark matter fluids have been previously proposed. Following these
ideas, we consider a particular relation between dark densities, which allows
the possibility of a time varying equation of state for dark energy that
crosses the phantom divide at a recent epoch. Moreover, these densities decay
during all the evolution of the Universe, avoiding a Big Rip. We find also a
scaling solution, i.e. these densities are asymptotically proportional in the
future, which contributes to the solution of the coincidence problem.Comment: Improved version, 10 pages, 4 figures, References adde
The non-self-adjointness of the radial momentum operator in n dimensions
The non self-adjointness of the radial momentum operator has been noted
before by several authors, but the various proofs are incorrect. We give a
rigorous proof that the -dimensional radial momentum operator is not self-
adjoint and has no self-adjoint extensions. The main idea of the proof is to
show that this operator is unitarily equivalent to the momentum operator on
which is not self-adjoint and has no self-adjoint
extensions.Comment: Some text and a reference adde
From Dyck Paths to Standard Young Tableaux
We present nine bijections between classes of Dyck paths and classes of standard Young tableaux (SYT). In particular, we consider SYT of flag and rectangular shapes, we give Dyck path descriptions for certain SYT of height at most 3, and we introduce a special class of labeled Dyck paths of semilength n that is shown to be in bijection with the set of all SYT with n boxes. In addition, we present bijections from certain classes of Motzkin paths to SYT. As a natural framework for some of our bijections, we introduce a class of set partitions which in some sense is dual to the known class of noncrossing partitions
The kinematics of the quadrupolar nebula M1-75 and the identification of its central star
The link between the shaping of bipolar planetary nebulae and their central
stars is still poorly understood. The kinematics and shaping of the multipolar
nebula M 1-75 are hereby investigated, and the location and nature of its
central star are briefly discussed. Fabry-Perot data from GHaFAS on the WHT
sampling the Doppler shift of the [N II] 658.3 nm line are used to study the
dynamics of the nebula, by means of a detailed 3-D spatio-kinematical model.
Multi-wavelength images and spectra from the WFC and IDS on the INT, and from
ACAM on the WHT, allowed us to constrain the parameters of the central star.
The two pairs of lobes, angularly separated by ~22 degrees, were ejected
simultaneously approx. ~3500-5000 years ago, at the adopted distance range from
3.5 to 5.0 kpc. The larger lobes show evidence of a slight degree of point
symmetry. The shaping of the nebula could be explained by wind interaction in a
system consisting of a post-AGB star surrounded by a disc warped by radiative
instabilities. This requires the system to be a close binary or a single star
which engulfed a planet as it died. On the other hand, we present broad- and
narrow-band images and a low S/N optical spectrum of the highly-reddened,
previously unnoticed star which is likely the nebular progenitor. Its estimated
V-I colour allows us to derive a rough estimate of the parameters and nature of
the central star.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy &
