Efficacy of a self-help manual in increasing resilience in carers of adults with depression in Thailand
Caring for a person with a mental illness can have adverse effects on caregivers; however, little is known about how best to help such caregivers. The aim of the present study was to examine the efficacy of a cognitive behaviour therapy-guided self-help manual in increasing resilience in caregivers of individuals with depression, in comparison to caregivers who receive routine support only. A randomized, controlled trial was conducted, following CONSORT guidelines, with 54 caregivers allocated to parallel intervention (self-help manual) (n = 27) or control (standard support) (n = 27) groups. Resilience was assessed at baseline, post-test (week 8), and follow up (week 12). Intention-to-treat analyses were undertaken. Repeated-measures ANOVA indicated a significant difference in resilience scores between the three time points, showing a large effect. Pairwise comparisons between intervention and control groups indicated resilience to be significantly different between baseline and post-test, and between baseline and follow up, but not between post-test and follow up. Overall, the intervention group showed a slightly greater increase in resilience over time than the control group; however, the time–group interaction was not significant. Guided self-help is helpful in improving caregivers’ resilience and could be used as an adjunct to the limited support provided to carers by mental health nurses and other clinicians

Electrophysiological Evidence for Spatiotemporal Flexibility in the Ventrolateral Attention Network
Successful completion of many everyday tasks depends on interactions between voluntary attention, which acts to maintain current goals, and reflexive attention, which enables responding to unexpected events by interrupting the current focus of attention. Past studies, which have mostly examined each attentional mechanism in isolation, indicate that volitional and reflexive orienting depend on two functionally specialized cortical networks in the human brain. Here we investigated how the interplay between these two cortical networks affects sensory processing and the resulting overt behavior. By combining measurements of human performance and electrocortical recordings with a novel analytical technique for estimating spatiotemporal activity in the human cortex, we found that the subregions that comprise the reflexive ventrolateral attention network dissociate both spatially and temporally as a function of the nature of the sensory information and current task demands. Moreover, we found that together with the magnitude of the early sensory gain, the spatiotemporal neural dynamics accounted for the high amount of the variance in the behavioral data. Collectively these data support the conclusion that the ventrolateral attention network is recruited flexibly to support complex behaviors
Your Unconscious Knows Your Name
One's own name constitutes a unique part of conscious awareness – but does this also hold true for unconscious processing? The present study shows that the own name has the power to bias a person's actions unconsciously even in conditions that render any other name ineffective. Participants judged whether a letter string on the screen was a name or a non-word while this target stimulus was preceded by a masked prime stimulus. Crucially, the participant's own name was among these prime stimuli and facilitated reactions to following name targets whereas the name of another, yoked participant did not. Signal detection results confirmed that participants were not aware of any of the prime stimuli, including their own name. These results extend traditional findings on “breakthrough” phenomena of personally relevant stimuli to the domain of unconscious processing. Thus, the brain seems to possess adroit mechanisms to identify and process such stimuli even in the absence of conscious awareness
Spreading the sparing: Against a limited-capacity account of the attentional blink.
The identification of the second of two targets presented in close succession is often impaired-a phenomenon referred to as the attentional blink. Extending earlier work (Di Lollo, Kawahara, Ghorashi, and Enns, in Psychological Research 69:191-200, 2005), the present study shows that increasing the number of targets in the stream can lead to remarkable improvements as long as there are no intervening distractors. In addition, items may even recover from an already induced blink whenever they are preceded by another target. It is shown that limited memory resources contribute to overall performance, but independent of the attentional blink. The findings argue against a limited-capacity account of the blink and suggest a strong role for attentional control processes that may be overzealously applied. © 2005 Springer-Verlag
Taxonomic diversity and identification problems of oncaeid microcopepods in the Mediterranean Sea
The species diversity of the pelagic microcopepod
family Oncaeidae collected with nets of 0.1-mm mesh
size was studied at 6 stations along a west-to-east transect
in the Mediterranean Sea down to a maximum depth of
1,000 m. A total of 27 species and two form variants have
been identified, including three new records for the
Mediterranean. In addition, about 20, as yet undescribed,
new morphospecies were found (mainly from the genera
Epicalymma and Triconia) which need to be examined
further. The total number of identified oncaeid species was
similar in the Western and Eastern Basins, but for some cooccurring
sibling species, the estimated numerical dominance
changed. The deep-sea fauna of Oncaeidae, studied
at selected depth layers between 400 m and the near-bottom
layer at >4,200 m depth in the eastern Mediterranean
(Levantine Sea), showed rather constant species numbers
down to ∼3,000 m depth. In the near-bottom layers, the
diversity of oncaeids declined and species of Epicalymma
strongly increased in numerical importance. The taxonomic
status of all oncaeid species recorded earlier in the
Mediterranean Sea is evaluated: 19 out of the 46 known
valid oncaeid species are insufficiently described, and most
of the taxonomically unresolved species (13 species) have
originally been described from this area (type locality). The
deficiencies in the species identification of oncaeids cast
into doubt the allegedly cosmopolitan distribution of some
species, in particular those of Mediterranean origin. The
existing identification problems even of well-described
oncaeid species are exemplified for the Oncaea mediacomplex,
including O. media Giesbrecht, O. scottodicarloi
Heron & Bradford-Grieve, and O. waldemari Bersano &
Boxshall, which are often erroneously identified as a single
species (O. media). The inadequacy in the species identification
of Oncaeidae, in particular those from the Atlantic
and Mediterranean, is mainly due to the lack of reliable
identification keys for Oncaeidae in warm-temperate and/or
tropical seas. Future efforts should be directed to the
construction of identification keys that can be updated
according to the latest taxonomic findings, which can be
used by the non-expert as well as by the specialist. The
adequate consideration of the numerous, as yet undescribed,
microcopepod species in the world oceans, in
particular the Oncaeidae, is a challenge for the study of the
structure and function of plankton communities as well as
for global biodiversity estimates
Implicit Temporal Expectation Attenuates Auditory Attentional Blink
Attentional blink (AB) describes a phenomenon whereby correct identification of a first target impairs the processing of a second target (i.e., probe) nearby in time. Evidence suggests that explicit attention orienting in the time domain can attenuate the AB. Here, we used scalp-recorded, event-related potentials to examine whether auditory AB is also sensitive to implicit temporal attention orienting. Expectations were set up implicitly by varying the probability (i.e., 80% or 20%) that the probe would occur at the +2 or +8 position following target presentation. Participants showed a significant AB, which was reduced with the increased probe probability at the +2 position. The probe probability effect was paralleled by an increase in P3b amplitude elicited by the probe. The results suggest that implicit temporal attention orienting can facilitate short-term consolidation of the probe and attenuate auditory AB
Long-term multi-wavelength study of 1ES 0647+250
The BL Lac object 1ES 0647+250 is one of the few distant -ray
emitting blazars detected at very high energies (VHE, 100 GeV) during
a non-flaring state. It was detected with the MAGIC telescopes during its low
activity in the years 2009-2011, as well as during three flaring activities in
the years 2014, 2019 and 2020, with the highest VHE flux in the latter epoch.
An extensive multi-instrument data set was collected within several coordinated
observing campaigns throughout these years. We aim to characterise the
long-term multi-band flux variability of 1ES 0647+250, as well as its broadband
spectral energy distribution (SED) during four distinct activity states
selected in four different epochs, in order to constrain the physical
parameters of the blazar emission region under certain assumptions. We evaluate
the variability and correlation of the emission in the different energy bands
with the fractional variability and the Z-transformed Discrete Correlation
Function, as well as its spectral evolution in X-rays and rays. Owing
to the controversy in the redshift measurements of 1ES 0647+250 reported in the
literature, we also estimate its distance in an indirect manner through the
comparison of the GeV and TeV spectra from simultaneous observations with
Fermi-LAT and MAGIC during the strongest flaring activity detected to date.
Moreover, we interpret the SEDs from the four distinct activity states within
the framework of one-component and two-component leptonic models, proposing
specific scenarios that are able to reproduce the available multi-instrument

Multi-year characterisation of the broad-band emission from the intermittent extreme BL Lac 1ES~2344+514
The BL Lac 1ES 2344+514 is known for temporary extreme properties (e.g., a
shift of the synchrotron SED peak energy above 1keV). While
those extreme states were so far observed only during high flux levels,
additional multi-year observing campaigns are required to achieve a coherent
picture. Here, we report the longest investigation of the source from radio to
VHE performed so far, focusing on a systematic characterisation of the
intermittent extreme states. While our results confirm that 1ES 2344+514
typically exhibits 1keV during elevated flux periods, we also
find periods where the extreme state coincides with low flux activity. A strong
spectral variability thus happens in the quiescent state, and is likely caused
by an increase of the electron acceleration efficiency without a change in the
electron injection luminosity. We also report a strong X-ray flare (among the
brightest for 1ES 2344+514) without a significant shift of .
During this particular flare, the X-ray spectrum is among the softest of the
campaign. It unveils complexity in the spectral evolution, where the common
harder-when-brighter trend observed in BL Lacs is violated. During a low and
hard X-ray state, we find an excess of the UV flux with respect to an
extrapolation of the X-ray spectrum to lower energies. This UV excess implies
that at least two regions contribute significantly to the
infrared/optical/ultraviolet/X-ray emission. Using the simultaneous MAGIC,
XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and AstroSat observations, we argue that a region possibly
associated with the 10 GHz radio core may explain such an excess. Finally, we
investigate a VHE flare, showing an absence of simultaneous variability in the
0.3-2keV band. Using a time-dependent leptonic modelling, we show that this
behaviour, in contradiction to single-zone scenarios, can instead be explained
