    Get PDF
Abstract: The theoretical analysis, the method of calculation and the experimental tests on a double-sided linear induction motor (DLIM) with squirrel-cage secondary member are given. The air-core secondary is elastic and consists of copper bars, a braided conductive lines as end rings and woven plastics filaments. Equations of two-dimensional and one-dimensional magnetic-flux-density distribution in the secondary and the airgap are derived. Formulas for resistance and reactance of the squirrel-cage secondary and the thrust of DLIM are obtained. The end effect caused by the open-endedness of the airgap is taken into account. Performance characteristics, i.e. no-load and short-circuit curves obtained from calculations and measurements, are compared. ' The double-sided linear induction motor (DLIM) with squirrel-cage secondary produces thrust by means of an interaction between the primary field and the eddy currents induced in the secondary bars. A single-sided linear induction motor with a squirrel-cage reaction rail has been tested by Eastham and Katz [1]. The thrust forces indicate that the cage-rail single-sided linear induction motor performance is similar to that traditionally associated with the conventional squirrel-cage induction motor with frequency-independent rotor resistance. List of principal symbols So far as the author is aware, research into DLIMs with squirrel-cage secondaries without ferromagnetic cores has not had a high priority. If the air-core squirrel-cage secondary is elastic, it would be useful in, for example, conveyor system

Electric Motors for Non-Cryogenic Hybrid Electric and Turboelectric Propulsion

    Get PDF
NASA Glenn Research Center is investigating hybrid electric and turboelectric propulsion concepts for future aircraft to reduce fuel burn, emissions, and noise. Systems studies show that the weight and efficiency of the electric system components need to be improved for this concept to be feasible. However, advances in motor component materials such as soft magnetic materials, hard magnetic materials, conductors, thermal insulation, and structural materials are expected in the coming years, and should improve motor performance. This study investigates several motor types for a one megawatt application, and projects the motor performance benefits of new component materials that might be available in the coming decades

AC loss in ReBCO pancake coils and stacks of them: modelling and measurement

Many applications of ReBCO coated conductors contain stacks of pancake coils. In order to reduce their high AC loss, it is necessary to understand the loss mechanisms. In this article, we measure and simulate the AC loss and the critical current, I_c, in stacks of pancake coils ("pancakes"). We construct stacks of up to 4 pancakes and we measure them by electrical means. We also obtain the anisotropic field dependence of J_c from I_c measurements of the tape. This J_c is the only input to the simulations, together with the coil dimensions. After validating our computations with the measurements, we simulate stacks of many pancakes, up to 32. We found that the AC loss in a stack of (four) pancakes is very high, two orders of magnitude larger than for a single tape. A double pancake behaves as a single one with double width but a stack of more pancakes is very different. Finally, we found that a 2-strand Roebel cable reduces the AC loss in a stack of pancakes but not in a single pancake. In conclusion, the AC loss in stacks of pancakes is too high. However, our simulations are useful to predict the AC loss and optimise the coil design, reducing the AC loss.Comment: 34 pages, 18 figures. All figures are modified; figures 3, 7 and 10 are new. Mechanical design of rotors for permanent magnet high speed electric motors for turbocharger applications

    Get PDF
Realization of electrically boosted turbochargers requires electric motors capable of operating at very high speeds. These motors often use a permanent magnet rotor with the magnets retained within an interference fit external sleeve. Whilst it is possible to model such systems numerically, these models are an inefficient tool for design optimization. Current analytical models of rotors typically consider the stresses induced by the shrink fit of the sleeve separately from the stresses generated by centripetal forces due to rotation. However, such an approach ignores the frictional interaction between the components in the axial direction. This paper presents an analytical model that simultaneously accounts for interaction between the magnet and outer sleeve in both the radial and axial directions at designed interference and with the assembly subjected to centripetal and thermal loads. Numerical models presented show that with only moderate coefficients of friction and rotor lengths; axial load transfer between magnet and sleeve takes place over a short distance at the ends of the assembly. The paper then demonstrates how the analytical model aids definition of a feasible set of rotor designs and selection of an optimum design

The SST-1M project, run by a Consortium of institutes from Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland, has been proposed as a solution for implementing the small-size telescope array of the southern site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array. The technology is a pathfinder for efficient production of cost-effective imaging air Cherenkov telescopes. We report on the main system features and recent upgrades, the performances validation and the operation campaign carried out in 2018

Obliczenia analityczne hałasu akustycznego wywołanego polem magnetycznym w silnikach bezszczotkowych o magnesach trwałych

Prediction of acoustic noise radiated by electric motors is nowadays important both for machine manufacturers and users. This paper describes an engineering approach to prediction of noise of magnetic origin produced by permanent magnet (PM) brushless motors. The sound power level (SWL) is calculated on the basis of magnetic field analysis in the air gap, radial forces, natural frequencies of the stator-frame system and radiation efficiency coefficient. Accuracy problems encountered in the analytical and numerical noise prediction have been discussed.
