    The dualisation and the first-order formulation of the D=7 abelian Yang-Mills supergravity which is the low energy effective limit of the D=7 fully Higssed heterotic string is discussed. The non-linear coset formulation of the scalars is enlarged to include the entire bosonic sector by introducing dual fields and by constructing the Lie superalgebra which generates the dualized coset element.Comment: 20 page

    Fermionic zero-modes in type II fivebrane backgrounds

    The explicit form of the fermionic zero-modes in the fivebrane backgrounds of type IIA and IIB supergravity theories is investigated. In type IIA fivebrane background there are four zero-modes of gravitinos and dilatinos. In type IIB fivebrane background four zero-modes of dilatinos and no zero-modes of gravitinos are found. These zero-modes indicate the four-fermion condensates which have been suggested in a calculation of the tension of the D-brane in fivebrane backgrounds.Comment: 10 page

    Kac-Moody Symmetries of Ten-dimensional Non-maximal Supergravity Theories

    A description of the bosonic sector of ten-dimensional N=1 supergravity as a non-linear realisation is given. We show that if a suitable extension of this theory were invariant under a Kac-Moody algebra, then this algebra would have to contain a rank eleven Kac-Moody algebra, that can be identified to be a particular real form of very-extended D_8. We also describe the extension of N=1 supergravity coupled to an abelian vector gauge field as a non-linear realisation, and find the Kac-Moody algebra governing the symmetries of this theory to be very-extended B_8. Finally, we discuss the related points for the N=1 supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of abelian vector gauge fields

    Weight Loss and Hypertension in Obese Subjects

    Arterial hypertension is strongly related to overweight and obesity. In obese subjects, several mechanisms may lead to hypertension such as insulin and leptin resistance, perivascular adipose tissue dysfunction, renal impairment, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone-system activation and sympathetic nervous system activity. Weight loss (WL) seems to have positive effects on blood pressure (BP). The aim of this review was to explain the mechanisms linking obesity and hypertension and to evaluate the main studies assessing the effect of WL on BP. We analysed studies published in the last 10 years (13 studies either interventional or observational) showing the effect of WL on BP. Different WL strategies were taken into account-diet and lifestyle modification, pharmacological intervention and bariatric surgery. Although a positive effect of WL could be identified in each study, the main difference seems to be the magnitude and the durability of BP reduction over time. Nevertheless, further follow-up data are needed: there is still a lack of evidence about long term effects of WL on hypertension. Hence, given the significant results obtained in several recent studies, weight management should always be pursued in obese patients with hypertension

    The relative absorption of fatty acids in brown trout (Salmo trutta) fed a commercial extruded pellet coated with different lipid sources

    The objective of the present study was to investigate the fatty acid absorption capabilities of brown trout (Salmo trut- ta) fed commercial extruded diets. Five commercial extruded pellets, different only in the lipid sources used for fat coat- ing, were tested on juvenile brown trout for 45 days. The trout were reared in fresh water at 14.6 ± 0.4° C and 7.7 ± 0.3 mg/l, temperature and dissolved oxygen, respectively. The tested lipid sources were fish oil, canola oil, oleine oil, swine fat and poultry fat. After the adaptation period faeces were collected by gently stripping from anaesthetized fish. Fatty acid analysis was performed on experimental diets and on collected faeces to evaluate the relative absorption capabilities of the trout digestive system with respect to each detected fatty acid. The use of the relative absorption efficiency (rAE) was opted to evaluate the intrinsic capability of each fatty acid to be absorbed. Brown trout showed a specific preferential order of absorption of the fatty acids, preferring shorter over longer chain fatty acids and prefer- ring the more unsaturated to the more saturated fatty acids. The fatty acid that showed the best relative absorbability was the C18:4n-3 (rAE = 5.14 ± 0.72), which has a fairly short carbon chain, but at the same time a high unsatura- tion level, followed by the C18:3n-3 (rAE = 3.38 ± 0.30). The fatty acid that showed the worst relative absorbability (rAE = 0.21 ± 0.02) was C24:1n-9

    Recent food scares have emphasized the need for traceability in the food chain. This is particularly true in the fish sector, where a large difference in the final price between wild and farmed fish and even between farmed fish reared in different countries exists. So for these commercial and hygienic reasons it is very important to find useful tools for the characterization of quality of fish and for the differentiation of fish from different production methods and from different countries, in accordance with EC Regulation No. 2065/2001 and Italian Ministry of Agriculture Decree No. 27.03.02, that allow retail trade of fishery and aquaculture products only against the indication of the official commercial name, the method of production and the geographical origin of fish (Moretti et al., 2003)

    POS1315 USEFULNESS OF SYNOVIAL BIOPSY IN THE DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS AND AS POSSIBLE PREDICTOR OF RESPONSE TO TREATMENT IN JUVENILE IDIOPATHIC ARTHRITIS

    Background:While synovial biopsy is an invasive procedure and is not required for the diagnosis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), it may be useful in doubtful cases.Objectives:Aims of the study were i.to verify the role of synovial biopsy in the differential diagnosis of JIA and ii. to review the pathology slides in order to evaluate possible associations of a histologic pattern with response to treatment.Methods:We reviewed data from medical records of patients under the age of 18 years who underwent a synovial biopsy requested by our Pediatric Rheumatology Unit over the last 10 years. We collected information on demographic, clinical, laboratory, radiological, histopathological characteristics, as well as treatment response (in particular, remission at the last visit and number of examination, number of biologic drugs used). Among variables in the histologic score, number of layers in the synovial lining and inflammatory infiltrate (0-5) were compared to clinical status at last visit. Potential differences in variables between responders and non responders were assessed by unpaired t-test or non-parametric Mann-Whitney test, as appropriate.Results:We identified 64 patients (40F, 24M) with a median age at disease onset of 9 years (range 1-15) and a median follow-up time of 161 months (range 8-1160). We recognized two groups of interest: patients with a known JIA diagnosis (28/64) and patients with unknown diagnosis (36/64) at the moment of synovial biopsy. In the group with known JIA, most underwent the procedure during orthopedic surgery, and in all cases the histology was consistent with JIA. Among the unknown diagnosis group, in 19 cases results were consistent with a chronic synovitis, while among the other 17 histology could lead to a diagnosis of other conditions in 6 cases (foreign body and villonodular synovitis n=2 each, sarcoidosis and osteochondromatosis n=1 each). In the remaining 11 the final diagnoses were varied (mostly genetic forms eg skeletal dysplasia, CACP, Thiemann disease).Between the two groups we identified 46 patients with a definite JIA diagnosis. At the last follow-up visit 29 of them were in clinical remission, albeit on medication. The remaining 17 had a severe course of disease, with persistent activity and use of at least two biologic drugs. In 26 cases we could evaluate the correlation between status at last visit and number of layers/inflammatory infiltrate, but no statistical significant correlation was found.Conclusion:Despite its limited use nowadays, synovial biopsy may still be a useful tool in patients whose diagnosis is unclear. In our study, while it confirmed the suspicion in most cases, in other instances it allowed the diagnosis of rare conditions that would have been otherwise missed. No association between disease course and histological features in a small JIA cohort was found. We are currently expanding the study with a larger series.Disclosure of Interests:None declare
