    Lifetime consumption and degradation analysis of the winding insulation of electrical machines

    In this paper, a novel multi-stress model which estimates the lifetime of the winding insulation relative to its duty cycle is proposed and investigated. With an adequate implementation of this model, then an electrical machine can be designed not only in terms of its performance requirements, but also considering the associated reliability and lifetime aspects. Since thermal and thermo-mechanical stresses are considered as the main ageing factors, the model is particularly suited for low voltage, low duty cycle machines. The determination of the model parameters is based on the results of accelerated thermo-mechanical ageing tests, whose procedure is thoroughly reported in the paper. The results of the accelerated ageing tests show that the effect of thermo-mechanical ageing is significant even for small size, random wound windings under fast temperature rise

    Filtration of the Microalga Amphidinium carterae by the Polychaetes Sabella spallanzanii and Branchiomma luctuosum: A New Tool for the Control of Harmful Algal Blooms?

    Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are extreme biological events representing a major issue in marine, brackish, and freshwater systems worldwide. Their proliferation is certainly a problem from both ecological and socioeconomic contexts, as harmful algae can affect human health and activities, the marine ecosystem functioning, and the economy of coastal areas. Once HABs establish, valuable and environmentally friendly control actions are needed to reduce their negative impacts. In this study, the influence exerted by the filter‐feeding activity of the two sabellid polychaetes Branchiomma luctuosum (Grube) and Sabella spallanzanii (Gmelin) on a harmful dinoflagellate was investigated. Clearance rates (C) and retention efficiencies were estimated by employing the microalga Amphidinium carterae Hulburt. The Cmax was 1.15 ± 0.204 L h−1 g−1 DW for B. luctuosum and 0.936 ± 0.151 L h−1 g−1 DW for S. spallanzanii. The retention efficiency was 72% for B. luctuosum and 68% for S. spallanzanii. Maximum retention was recorded after 30 min for both species. The obtained results contribute to the knowledge of the two polychaetes’ filtration activity and to characterize the filtration process on harmful microalgae in light of the protection of water resources and human health. Both species, indeed, were extremely efficient in removing A. carterae from seawater, thus suggesting their employment as a new tool in mitigation technologies for the control of harmful algae in marine environments, as well as in the aquaculture facilities where HABs are one of the most critical threats

    Analytical thermal model for fast stator winding temperature prediction

    This paper introduces an innovative thermal modelling technique which accurately predicts the winding temperature of electrical machines, both at transient and steady state conditions, for applications where the stator Joule losses are the dominant heat source. The model is an advanced variation of the classical Lumped Parameter Thermal Network approach, with the expected degree of accuracy but at a much lower computational cost. A 7-node Thermal Network is first implemented and an empirical procedure to fine-tuning the critical parameters is proposed. The derivation of the low computational cost model from the Thermal Network is thoroughly explained. A simplification of the 7-node Thermal Network with an equivalent 3-node Thermal Network is then implemented, and the same procedure is applied to the new network for deriving an even faster low computational cost model. The proposed model is then validated against experimental results carried on a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine which is part of an electro-mechanical actuator designed for an aerospace application. A comparison between the performance of the classical Lumped Parameter Thermal Network and the proposed model is carried out, both in terms of accuracy of the stator temperature prediction and of the computational time required

    Self-commissioning of interior permanent- magnet synchronous motor drives with high-frequency current injection

    In this paper, a simple and robust method for parameter estimation at rotor standstill is presented for interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous machines. The estimated parameters are the stator resistance through dc test, the dq inductances using high-frequency injection, and the permanent magnet flux by means of a closed-loop speed control maintaining rotor stationary. The proposed method does not require either locking the rotor or additional/special power supplies. The validity of the suggested method has been verified by implementation on two IPM motor prototypes. Finally, the estimated parameters have been compared against results obtained through finite-element simulations and with machine magnetic characterization, separately performed, to validate the method's effectiveness. Saturation and cross-saturation effects are taken care of through amplitude modulation and cross-axis current application, respectively

    Sabellidae (Annelida) from the Faro coastal lake (Messina, Ionian Sea), with the first record of the invasive species Branchiomma bairdi along the Italian coast

    In the present paper, morphological and ecological observations on 4 sabellid taxa, Branchiomma bairdi, B. luctuosum,Megalomma lanigera and Myxicola sp., collected from the coastal lake of Faro (Messina, Ionian Sea) (26-36 psu), are reported. Megalomma lanigera, Myxicola sp. and B. luctuosum were collected from the soft bottom in shallow water and B. bairdi from the hard bottom of an internal channel. The presence of the latter is remarkable, as there is no previous record of this species along the Italian coast, and it confirms the lake of Faro as a very favourable environment for the introduction of alien species, which has occurred frequently as a result of aquaculture. High intraspecific variation was observed for M. lanigera, whilst more extensive analysis is required to ascertain the taxonomic status of the Myxicola specimens, including a review of all Mediterranean data currently attributed to M. infundibulum

    Biology and new records of the invasive species Branchiomma bairdi (Annelida: Sabellidae) in the Mediterranean Sea

    The first observations on the reproductive biology of the alien polychaete Branchiomma bairdi (McIntosh, 1885) (Sabellidae) in the Mediterranean Sea are provided as well as additional Mediterranean records of the species, which can help to understand its introduction and spreading. Re-examination of the specimens from Miseno harbour (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) revealed the presence of B. bairdi in the central-Mediterranean since September 2004. The histological study of individuals collected in Malta revealed that the species is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, developing male and female gametes in the same body segments; embryos are brooded inside the parent tube. However, there is also evidence of asexual reproduction. The species shows a different reproductive pattern from the previously reported population from the eastern-Pacific; this demonstrates its great plasticity and adaptability. Branchiomma bairdi has an invasive behaviour, colonizing large areas in relatively short-time, and reaching relatively high densities (c.a. 50 individuals/m2). Its expansion to several Mediterranean localities is largely a consequence of the high capacity of this species to colonize extremely different habitats and substrates, the occurrence of sexual and asexual reproductive strategies, and the combination of both. Furthermore, B. bairdi appears to be particularly abundant in confined areas and areas degraded due to anthropogenic impacts. Finally, our findings strongly suggest that the pathway of introduction in the Mediterranean, previously hypothesized as the Suez Canal (Lessepsian migration), is most likely via the Strait of Gibraltar

    Two cases study of fouling colonization patterns in the Mediterranean Sea in the perspective of integrated aquaculture systems

    Fouling assemblage colonizing fish-farms is considered mostly to produce negative impacts causing financial loss. By contrast, large evidences emerged on the bioremediation role by biofouling associated to aquaculture facilities, even if the fouling assemblages thriving in the water column was poorly investigated. The aim of the present work was to investigate the macrofouling assemblages over one year of immersion, in order to single out the fouling species, which play the most remarkable role for the bioremediation of the marine areas affected by aquaculture activities. With this in mind, we studied the fouling community dynamics in two Mediterranean maricultural facilities, respectively in the Mar Grande of Taranto (Ionian Sea) and in the Gulf of Gaeta (Tyrrhenian Sea), using the same experimental design and time frame. Two experiments were carried out using artificial panels anchored to two finfish cages. The one-year old fouling communities in the two sites were compared at four seasons of immersion, four submersion durations and three depths, both communities from structural and functional points of view. Notwithstanding the quite similar species composition of fouling of the two sites, the biofouling showed the highest biodiversity in the Mar Grande of Taranto. In the Gulf of Gaeta mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, dominated at all the times and depths, whilst in the Mar Grande of Taranto they were especially abundant at the surface with the deepest panels being largely colonized by polychaete sabellids. The co-occurrence of the filter-feeders Mytilus-sabellids recorded in the Gulf of Taranto also highlighted the highest filtration capability. Our results suggest two different fouling assemblages as candidates for bioremediation in integrated multitrophic aquaculture facilities: both a monospecific system dominated by mussels and a multi-specific system with sabellids and mussels as most abundant filter-feeders

Розглянуто особливості іконографічного зображення, його відмінність від зображення у творі мистецтва. Проаналізовано чотири основні іконографічні типи й варіанти ікон Богородиці.
