Primary gas thermometry by means of laser-absorption spectroscopy: Determination of the Boltzmann constant
We report on a new optical implementation of primary gas thermometry based on
laser absorption spectrometry in the near infrared. The method consists in
retrieving the Doppler broadening from highly accurate observations of the line
shape of the R(12) transition in
CO gas at thermodynamic equilibrium. Doppler width measurements as a
function of gas temperature, ranging between the triple point of water and the
gallium melting point, allowed for a spectroscopic determination of the
Boltzmann constant with a relative accuracy of .Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letter
Cereal-based gluten-free food: how to riconcile nutritional and technological properties of wheat proteins with safety for celiac disease patients
The gluten-free diet is, to date, the only efficacious treatment for patients with
Celiac Disease. In recent years, the impressive rise of Celiac Disease incidence,
dramatically prompted changes in the dietary habit of an increasingly large population,
with a rise in demand of gluten-free products. The formulation of gluten-free bakery
products presents a formidable challenge to cereal technologists. As wheat gluten
contributes to the formation of a strong protein network, that confers visco-elasticity to the
dough and allows the wheat flour to be processed into a wide range of products, the
preparation of cereal-based gluten-free products is a process somehow difficult process.
This review focuses on nutritional and technological quality of products made with
gluten-free cereals available on the market. The possibility of using flour from naturally
low toxic ancient wheat species or detoxified wheat for the diet of celiacs is also discussed
Comb-assisted mercury spectroscopy in the deep-ultraviolet: towards the development of a new primary thermometer
We report on the development of a new primary thermometer based upon high-precision spectroscopy of mercury vapors in the deep-ultraviolet region for the practical realization of the new kelvin. The line profile of the (6s2)1S0 > (6s6p)3P1 intercombination transition of the 200Hg bosonic isotope is observed with a high spectral fidelity using a coherent radiation source at 253.7 nm. This latter consists of a near-IR external cavity diode laser followed by a double-stage second-harmonic generation apparatus. Metrology grade UV spectroscopy is demonstrated by locking the diode laser to a self-referenced optical frequency comb synthesizer
Continuous in situ measurements of volcanic gases with a diode-laser-based spectrometer: CO2 and H2O concentration and soil degassing at Vulcano (Aeolian islands: Italy)
We report on a continuous-measurement campaign carried out in Vulcano (Aeolian islands, Sicily), devoted to the simultaneous monitoring of CO2 and H2O concentrations. The measurements were performed with an absorption spectrometer based on a semiconductor laser source emitting around a 2-μm wavelength. The emitted radiation was selectively absorbed by two molecular ro-vibrational transitions specific of the investigated species. Data for CO2 and H2O concentrations, and CO2 soil diffusive flux using an accumulation chamber configuration, were collected at several interesting sampling points on the island (Porto Levante beach- PLB, Fossa Grande Crater – FOG- and Valley of Palizzi, PAL). CO2/H2O values, measured on the ground, are very similar (around 0.019 (± 0.006)) and comparable to the previous discrete detected values of 0.213 (Fumarole F5-La Fossa crater rim) and 0.012 (Fumarole VFS – Baia Levante beach) obtaid during the 1977–1993 heating phase of the crater fumaroles
