    T-branes through 3d mirror symmetry

    T-branes are exotic bound states of D-branes, characterized by mutually non-commuting vacuum expectation values for the worldvolume scalars. The M/F-theory geometry lifting D6/D7-brane configurations is blind to the T-brane data. In this paper, we make this data manifest, by probing the geometry with an M2-brane. We find that the effect of a T-brane is to deform the membrane worldvolume superpotential with monopole operators, which partially break the three-dimensional flavor symmetry, and reduce supersymmetry from N=4 to N=2. Our main tool is 3d mirror symmetry. Through this language, a very concrete framework is developed for understanding T-branes in M-theory. This leads us to uncover a new class of N=2 quiver gauge theories, whose Higgs branches mimic those of membranes at ADE singularities, but whose Coulomb branches differ from their N=4 counterparts.Comment: 36 page

    In vivo validation of the multicomponent powder (Vitachelox\uae) against the deposition of polluting ions

    Purpose: The purpose of this in vivo study is to evaluate the acute clinical application of a multicomponent powder (Vitachelox\uae), including three naturally occurring standardized extracts rich in polyphenols (grape seed extract, green tea extract, oak wood/bark extract), on healthy volunteers by measuring prevention of any metal deposition within the stratum corneum (SC) following a 6-h exposure period in a polluted environment. Patients and methods: In this in vivo study, we evaluated the skin protective activity of the multicomponent powder formulated in a base emulsion compared to a relevant placebo cream. Using the tape stripping method, SC samples of face skin obtained from 30 healthy volunteers were compared following a 6-h exposure in a polluted area. Results: No statistically significant variations on the amount of heavy metals were found in the samples of SC cells obtained from the hemi-faces treated with the multicomponent powder, with respect to baseline. On the contrary, a significantly higher concentration of heavy metals was found in the cells samples obtained from the hemi-faces treated with the placebo cream. In particular, an increased concentration of heavy metals superior to 100% were found for iron and zinc (+130.2% and +142.6%, respectively; p<0.001). Conclusion: This in vivo study validates and extends previous in vitro findings, indicating that the multicomponent powder allows the prevention of any metal deposition within the SC following exposure in a polluted environment. Our results suggest that the test product could play an effective role in counteracting skin damages induced by air pollution

    Resolving tricky nodes in the tree of life through amino acid recoding

    Genomic data allowed a detailed resolution of the Tree of Life, but ''tricky nodes'' such as the root of the animals remain unresolved. Genome-scale datasets are heterogeneous as genes and species are exposed to different pressures, and this can negatively impacts phylogenetic accuracy. We use simulated genomic- scale datasets and show that recoding amino acid data improves accuracy when the model does not account for the compositional heterogeneity of the amino acid alignment. We apply our findings to three datasets addressing the root of the animal tree, where the debate centers on whether sponges (Porifera) or comb jellies (Ctenophora) represent the sister of all other animals. We show that results from empirical data follow predictions from simulations and suggest that, at the least in phylogenies inferred from amino acid sequences, a placement of the ctenophores as sister to all the other animals is best explained as a tree reconstruction artifact

    Using ZOOM-events for Scientific Conferences: The ICHEP 2022 Experience

    The organization of seminars and conferences was strongly influenced by the covid-19 pandemic. In the early period of the pandemic, many events were canceled or held completely online, using video conferencing tools such as ZOOM or MS Teams or Google Meet. Later, thanks to large-scale vaccination and immunization, it was possible to organize again large events in person. Nevertheless it was still necessary to provide online modalities for participants who could not participate in person, having in fact hybrid events with both remote and in person participation. However, in 2022, the global pandemic situation was patchy, with many countries still affected by travel restrictions, making it necessary to provide online modalities for participants who could not participate in-person, having in fact hybrid events with both remote and in-person participation. In this contribution we describe the experience with the ZOOM-Events platform, used for the ICHEP 2022 International Conference on High Energy Physics, held in Bologna in July 2022, with about 1100 participants in-person and 300 connected remotely. We describe in detail how the ZOOM-Events platform was configured for the management of the numerous parallel sessions and the granting of access to participants and how we dealt with the problems that emerged in the organizational phases
