This study analyses the impact of third-party voluntary certifications on the asset of wineries operating in the Southern Italian regions. The study carried out both quantitative and qualitative approaches, with data extracted from the AIDA Bureau van Dijk International Database (including performance indicators). The analysed sector belongs to 11.02 ‘Manufacture of wine from grape’ of the Statistical classification of economic activities in the European Community (NACE). The econometric elaboration (regression) was carried out by means of STATA software 14. Comparing certified and no certified wineries, results show a better asset performance of certified wineries, confirmed by a positive relationship between higher revenues and bigger size. The adoption of voluntary certifications requires the presence of highly qualified people, capable of managing innovations of product or process. Wine managers should consider that the expected impacts of the adoption of voluntary certification are not independent from both targeted business scopes and institutional context where the winery operates, being strictly linked to specific market and seller strategic decisions, including customer centricity approaches. For what in our knowledge, this work is the first attempt in investigating the impact of voluntary certifications in the Sicilian wine industries. Results are thus of relevant importance and originality and able to suggest new insights on business assets management for the wine industry, enabling managers to better approach the decision to get certified through sustainable standards

General aim of this work is to propose multidimensional statistical analysis to assess and monitor the effects of European policies implemented in the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) sector, with a focus on the monitoring of Europe 2020 Strategy. The first section of the work, shows an historical review on the main legislative tools though which the European Union started its Renewable Energy Policy. According to the information in this way collected, the second part of the thesis has been addressed to the analysis of the effect, measured in terms of Mega Watt installed, arised from the implementation of RES support schemes in 11 EU Member States, in the Photovoltaic sector. The results, obtained through the application of the STATIS method together with the Data Envelopment Analysis (in the Window version), allowed to confirm both the hypothesis of a harmonization from the bottom and the good functioning of such kind of instruments to achieve Europe 2020 RES targets. With the specific objective to carry out a micro-level analysis, the third part of the work has seen the creation of a synthetic index aimed at monitoring the Europe 2020 at regional level, with a focus on the 20 Italian Regions. The index (called IM_EU2020), based on the weighting and aggregation methods of the Adjusted Mazziotta Parota Index, includes three dimensions of the European Strategy: environment, energy and social. The proposed index seems to have achieved the scientific scope of decomposing and analyzing the concrete contribution that each Italian Region is generating to allow the target fulfillment at National level

Objectives. To evaluate the prognostic value of pre-treatment prognostic-nutritional index (PNI) in patients with HPV-negative head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Methods. A multi-institutional retrospective series of HPV-negative, Stages II-IVB, HNSCCs treated with upfront surgery was evaluated. Correlation of pre-operative blood markers and PNI with 5-year overall (OS) and relapse-free (RFS) survival was tested using linear and restricted cubic spline models, as appropriate. The independent prognostic effect of patient-related features was assessed with multivariable models. Results. The analysis was conducted on 542 patients. PNI ≥ 49.6 (HR = 0.52; 95% CI, 0.37-0.74) and Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) > 4.2 (HR = 1.58; 95% CI, 1.06-2.35) confirmed to be independent prognosticators of OS, whereas only PNI ≥ 49.6 (HR = 0.44; 95% CI, 0.29-0.66) was independently associated with RFS. Among pre-operative blood parameters, only higher values of albuninaemia and lymphocyte count (> 1.08 x 103/microL), and undetectable basophile count (= 0 103/microL) were independently associated with better OS and RFS. Conclusions. PNI represents a reliable prognostic tool providing an independent measure of pre-operative immuno-metabolic performance. Its validity is supported by the independent prognostic role of albuminaemia and lymphocyte count, from which it is derived

CDKN1B mutation and copy number variation are associated with tumor aggressiveness in luminal breast cancer

The CDKN1B gene, encoding for the CDK inhibitor p27kip1, is mutated in defined human cancer subtypes, including breast, prostate carcinomas and small intestine neuroendocrine tumors. Lessons learned from small intestine neuroendocrine tumors suggest that CDKN1B mutations could be subclonal, raising the question of whether a deeper sequencing approach could lead to the identification of higher numbers of patients with mutations. Here, we addressed this question and analyzed human cancer biopsies from breast (n = 396), ovarian (n = 110) and head and neck squamous carcinoma (n = 202) patients, using an ultra-deep sequencing approach. Notwithstanding this effort, the mutation rate of CDKN1B remained substantially aligned with values from the literature, showing that essentially only hormone receptor-positive breast cancer displayed CDKN1B mutations in a relevant number of cases (3%). However, the analysis of copy number variation showed that another fraction of luminal breast cancer displayed loss (8%) or gain (6%) of the CDKN1B gene, further reinforcing the idea that the function of p27kip1 is important in this type of tumor. Intriguingly, an enrichment for CDKN1B alterations was found in samples from premenopausal luminal breast cancer patients (n = 227, 4%) and in circulating cell-free DNA from metastatic luminal breast cancer patients (n = 59, 8.5%), suggesting that CDKN1B alterations could correlate with tumor aggressiveness and/or occur later during disease progression. Notably, many of the identified somatic mutations resulted in p27kip1 protein truncation, leading to loss of most of the protein or of its C-terminal domain. Using a gene-editing approach in a luminal breast cancer cell line, MCF-7, we observed that the expression of p27kip1 truncating mutants that lose the C-terminal domains failed to rescue most of the phenotypes induced by CDKN1B gene knockout, indicating that the functions retained by the C-terminal portion are critical for its role as an oncosuppressor, at least in luminal breast cancer. © 2020 The Authors. New System for the Acceleration of the Airflow in Wind Turbines

    Get PDF
Background: This patent is based on the wind industry technology called Diffuser Augmented Wind Turbines (DAWTs). This technology consists of a horizontal axis wind turbine, which is housed inside a duct with diverging section in the direction of the free air stream. In this paper, a review of preceding patents related to this technology is carried out. Objective: This paper presents an innovative patent to improve the performance of horizontal axis wind turbines. In particular, this system is aimed at improving the performance of those turbines that otherwise might not be installed due to the low wind resource existing at certain locations. Methods: The most innovative elements of this patent are: (1) the semi-spherical grooves, which are mechanized on the surface of the two diffusers in order to guarantee a more energetic boundary layer; (2) the coaxial diffuser, which is located downwind following the first diffuser in order to increase the suction effect on the air mass close to the inlet; (3) the coaxial rings located around the first diffuser outlet, which are used to deflect the external airflow toward the turbine wake; and (4), the selforientating system to orientate the system by the prevailing wind direction. Results: An application of the patent for increasing the power generated by a horizontal axis wind turbine with three blades is presented. The patent is designed and its performance is evaluated by using a Computational Fluid Dynamics code. The numerical results show that this system rises the airflow going through the rotor of the turbine. Conclusion: The patented device is an original contribution aimed at enabling a more profitable installation of wind turbines in places where the wind resource is insufficient because of the wind shear caused both by the proximity of the earth and the obstacles on the earth surface. This work was supported by the OASIS Research Project that was cofinanced by CDTI (Spanish Science and Innovation Ministry) and developed with the Spanish companies: Iridium, OHL Concesiones, Abertis, Sice, Indra, Dragados, OHL, Geocisa, GMV, Asfaltos Augusta, Hidrofersa, Eipsa, PyG, CPS, AEC and Torre de Comares Arquitectos S.L and 16 research centres.
