    ANTIOXIDANT, ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AND DIABETES RELATED ENZYME INHIBITION PROPERTIES OF LEAVES EXTRACT FROM SELECTED VARIETIES OF PHOENYX DACTYLIFERA L.

    Objective: to investigate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic activities of ethanolic leaves extracts of three selected varieties of Phoenyx dactylifera L. namely: Gharsâ€, Deglet Nour†and Hamrayaâ€. Methods: The assessment of the antioxidant potential of crude leaves extracts, using superoxide anions inhibition, DPPH and total antioxidant activity essays, was carried out. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory properties of the extracts were determined by measuring the inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production. Moreover, the antidiabetic effect was evaluated by inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. The total phenolic content measured by Folin-ciocalteu method was as well conducted. Results: The raw leaves extracts of the selected varieties was found to contain a high content of total phenolic content (342.45 mg GAE/ gDW for GE) and therefore exhibited a higher antioxidant activity and inhibitory effect of radicals scavenging activity against DPPH and superoxide anion (IC50=7.44 μg/mL and 39.11 μg/mL respectively). The three varieties exhibited significant anti-inflammatory effects using in-vitro inhibition of NO (IC50=240.28 μg/mL for GE). The extracts also displayed high inhibition actions against α-amylase. Conclusion: the results suggest that the leaves of the three selected varieties of Phoenyx dactylifera can be considered as a good source of natural antioxidant and anti-inflammation drugs as well as potent antidiabetic medicine

    Effect of operating parameters on the selectivity of nanofiltration phosphates transfer through a Nanomax-50 membrane

    The present study deals with the retention by nanofiltration of synthetic solutions containing phosphate salts with a Nanomax-50 charged membrane. This work investigates the potential of the membrane for the selective retention of the phosphate anions H2PO4- and HPO42-. The first part of the study involves the characterization of the membrane used in filtration tests with aqueous solutions of neutral solutes (organic) and charged solutes (inorganic salts). In the second part, the effects of pressure, ionic strength and pH on the retention of phosphate anions are described. The results showed that the membrane is negatively charged at pH > 5 with a pore radius of about 0.45 nm and a hydraulic permeability around 24.6 10−12 m s−1 Pa−1. The values of the rejection rate of the phosphate anions are about 93% for HPO4- and 98% for HPO42-. The rejection rate of phosphate anions, particularly monovalent, depends on chemical parameters (feed concentrations, ionic strength and pH) and on transmembrane pressure.     In order to evaluate the Diptera biodiversity in the Boumerzoug sub-basin, samples were performed at five permanent oueds: El Berda Oued, Boumerzoug Oued, El Guareh Oued, Hmimime Oued, and Sigus Oued. Sampling was carried out monthly during the period from December 2014 to November 2015. The samples were taken using a Surber mesh for the lotic face with size 25 cm * 20 cm * 65 cm, 500 µm net. In total, 53484 individuals comprising 24 families were collected. The Chironomidae family is the most dominant with a population of 43553 individuals (Fc % = 81.43%), followed by the Simuliidae (5137 individuals, Fc % = 9.61%), Psychodidae (1907 individuals, Fc % = 3.57%), Ephydridae (1509 individuals (Fc % = 2.81%) and Sciaridae (313 individuals, Fc % = 0.59%). However the remained families (Culicidae, Asilliidae, Mycetophilidae, Tipulidae, Syrphidae, Tabanidae, Muscidae, Calliphoridae, Ceratopogonidae, Fanniidae, Cecidomyiidae, Anthomyiidae, Sphaeroceidae, Sciomyzidae, Stratiomyidae, and Phoridae) weree poorly represented (between 1 individual (Fc % <0.00%) to 281 individuals (Fc % = 0.53%) were collected with predominance. Finally, compared to the other families, the predominance of the Chironomidae family can be explained by the fact that this family plays an important ecological role in wetlands rich in organic matter, even clearly polluted

    The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of aerial parts of Centaurea dimorpha Viv. were analyzed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main constituents were Caryophyllene oxide (09.88%), limonene (5.73%), tetradecanoic acid (5.68%), spathulenol (5.44%), methyl hexadecanoate (4.45%), and α-pinene (03.08%). To our best knowledge this is the first study of essential oils from the aerial parts of Centaurea dimorpha growing in Algeria. Moreover the essential oil and methanolic extract were screened for their possible in vitro antioxidant activity by DPPH free radical-scavenging test. The findings showed that the percentage inhibition is 10.67 and 77.01 respectively at a concentration of 1mole/L

    Enhanced corrosion inhibition of carbon steel in HCl solution by a newly synthesized hydrazone derivative: Mechanism exploration from electrochemical, XPS, and computational studies

    International audienceThe corrosion inhibition properties of a synthesized hydrazone derivative namely, 1-(4-isopropyl phenyl) -2- (2,4-dinitrophenyl) (HYD (iso)) on API 5L-X60 carbon steel (CS) in 1.0 M HCl solution were evaluated by chemical, electrochemical, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and theoretical studies. The obtained results revealed that the tested compound acted as a good corrosion inhibitor with inhibition efficiency of 96.32% at a concentration of 5 × 10−3 M. The polarization technique indicated that the HYD (iso) belonged to mixed-type inhibitors, preventing simultaneously anodic and cathodic reactions. The binding between the HYD (iso)'s molecule and CS surface follows a Langmuir adsorption type model and its inhibition mechanism is assisted by physical and chemical interactions. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and contact angle analyses were performed to examine the surface morphology of inhibited and uninhibited samples. Additionally, theoretical studies using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation were performed to explore the most reactive sites of the hydrazone molecule and its adsorption mechanism

    Antiproliferative and Antioxidant Activities of Two Extracts of the Plant Species Euphorbia dendroides L.

    Background: These days, the desire for naturally occurring antioxidants has significantly increased, especially for use in foodstuffs, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products, to replace synthetic antioxidants that are regularly constrained due to their carcinogenicity. Methods: The study in hand aimed to appraise the antioxidant effect of two Euphorbia dendroides extracts using reducing power, anti-peroxidation, and DPPH (1,1 Diphenyl 2 Pycril Hydrazil) scavenging essays, in addition to the anticancer activity against two tumor cell lines, namely C6 (rat brain tumor)cells, and Hela (human uterus carcinoma)cell lines. Results: The results indicated that the ethyl acetate extract exhibited antiradical activity of 29.49%, higher than that of n-butanol extract (18.06%) at 100 &micro;g/mL but much lower than that of gallic acid (78.21%).The ethyl acetate extract exhibits better reducing capacity and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity compared to n-butanol extract but less than all tested standards. Moreover, the ethyl acetate extract was found to have an antiproliferative activity of more than 5-FU (5-fluoro-Uracil) against C6 cells at 250 &micro;g/mL with IC50 and IC75 of 113.97, 119.49 &micro;g/mL, respectively, and good cytotoxic activity against the Hela cell lines at the same concentration. The HPLC-TOF-MS (high performance liquid chromatography-Time-of-flight-Mass Spectrometry) analyses exposed the presence of various compounds, among which Gallic and Chlorogenic acids functioned as major compounds. Conclusions: The two extracts exhibited moderate anticancer abilities and behaved somewhat as average antioxidant agents. Based on the total phenolics and flavonoids contents, as well as HPLC results, it could be concluded that antiproliferative and antioxidant activities depend upon the content of different phenolics and flavonoids
