Mining activities produce large quantities of wastes which are highly contaminated with heavy metals. This can cause adverse effects on natural ecosystems, particularly on living organisms. The study reported here concerned the biomonitoring of pollution in the Sidi Kamber mining area, through the determination of various physiological mechanisms (bioaccumulation and translocation) and biochemical markers (chlorophyll (a) and (b), proline, total sugars and total proteins) active in resistance to heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) contamination, using three plant species Cistus monspeliensis, Rumex bucephalophorus and Verbascum sinuatum as bioindicators

    Computational Studies into Iron-Based Biocatalysis

    Get PDF
Iron-containing enzymes are ubiquitous in nature and play several key roles in living organisms. Unfortunately, like many other types of enzymes, their catalytic mechanisms are often elusive. The work presented herein investigates computationally the catalytic processes of three iron-containing enzymes: glycerophosphosdiesterase from Enterobacter aerogenes (GpdQ), coral allene oxide synthase (cAOS) and S-ribosylhomocysteinase (LuxS). While some were investigated primarily using density functional theory (DFT), others used quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in a complementary fashion

We compared the phytochemical constituents and antioxidant activities of three important species of Lamiaceae in Algeria (Mentha spicata, Ocimum basilicum and Thymus algeriensis). We noticed that the M. spicata species contains the largest fraction of phenolic and flavonoid products (231 and 22 mg / g) than the other two species studied. Other hand we founded that the two species M. spicata and T. algeriensis show excellent antioxidant activity in the ethanolic extract according to the two tests (DPPH and ABTS) compared to the ascorbic acid of reference. But the specie O. basilicum has good antioxidant activity in aqueous extraction. This Lamiaceae family takes an important place in the lives of Algerians citizens, so this species are very good source of natural antioxidant compounds in algerian traditional medicine. Keywords: Antioxidant activity, Lamiaceae, Mentha spicata, Ocimum basilicum and Thymus algeriensis, DPPH

Bio-activity of essential oils of Artemisia herba alba : effects on reproduction and adult mortality of a pest of stored Ephestia kuehniella (Lepidoptera)Our work reveals an insecticidal effect of essential oils extracted from aromatic plant Artemissia herba alba on population of insect pests Ephestia kuehniella. The biopesticide is adual mechanism of action. Administered in adults, the essential oil causes significant mortality compared with controls. Whilehis administration on pupae, it extending their pupal development and disrupts reproductive adults by extending the preoviposition period and reducing the period for depositing eggs asfertilized females, who can’t live more than one or two days, which reduces the number of eggs deposited

In order to evaluate the physico-chemical characteristics of honey, its phenolic compounds concentrations and its antioxidant activity, a study was carried out in the Laghouat area on four samples of honey taken at random and analyzed. The analysis of the physico-chemical parameters of the honey studied showed a pH of 4.15 ± 0.007, a water content of 15.4 ± 0.44 %, an ash content of 0.4 ± 0.003 %, an acidity of 23.02 ± 0.01 meq/Kg and an electrical conductivity of 0.40 ± 0.004 mS/Cm. Increase of brain total sodium concentrations (TSC) is present in multiple sclerosis (MS), but its pathological involvement has not been assessed yet. To determine in vivo the metabolic counterpart of brain sodium accumulation. Whole brain Na-MR imaging and 3D- H-EPSI data were collected in 21 relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients and 20 volunteers. Metabolites and sodium levels were extracted from several regions of grey matter (GM), normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) and white matter (WM) T lesions. Metabolic and ionic levels expressed as Z-scores have been averaged over the different compartments and used to explain sodium accumulations through stepwise regression models. MS patients showed significant Na accumulations with lower choline and glutamate-glutamine (Glx) levels in GM; Na accumulations with lower N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), Glx levels and higher Myo-Inositol (m-Ins) in NAWM; and higher Na, m-Ins levels with lower NAA in WM T lesions. Regression models showed associations of TSC increase with reduced NAA in GM, NAWM and T lesions, as well as higher total-creatine, and smaller decrease of m-Ins in T lesions. GM Glx levels were associated with clinical scores. Increase of TSC in RRMS is mainly related to neuronal mitochondrial dysfunction while dysfunction of neuro-glial interactions within GM is linked to clinical scores
