A critical discussion of complexity theory:how does 'complexity thinking' improve our understanding of politics and policymaking?

In this article, we present a critical discussion of complexity theory. We ask: what does it really offer policy studies? We suggest that its stated advantages-- interdisciplinarity, theoretical novelty, and empirical advance--are generally exaggerated and based more on hope than experience. In that context, we identify a cautiously positive role for complexity theory, primarily as a way to bridge academic and policymaker discussions by identifying the role of pragmatic responses to complexity in policymaking

Kritische Kulturtheorie : programmatische und methodologische Überlegungen

"Kultur" ist im letzten Jahrzehnt zu einem Schlüsselbegriff humanwissenschaftlicher (und auch politischer) Debatten avanciert. Dabei läßt sich allerdings feststellen, daß die Theoriebildung oftmals einen eher diffusen Begriff von Kultur veranschlagt und daß die Kulturtheorie daher noch weit davon entfernt ist, über ein adäquates methodisches Instrumentarium zu verfügen. Es dominieren empirisch-deskriptive Theorien, die den Kulturbegriff so abstrakt-inhaltsleer fassen, daß er nur noch für die symbolischsemiotische Konstruiertheit von Lebenswelt überhaupt steht oder zuletzt semantisch mit "Zivilisation" im allgemeinen zusammenfällt. Für Zwecke konkreter Kultur- und Zivilisationskritik ist ein derart undifferenzierter Kulturbegriff nicht mehr zu gebrauchen. Ja, nicht einmal systematische Deskription leistet er noch, da schon Klassifikationsversuche von Kulturtypen unter den Verdacht politischer Unkorrektheit gestellt werden. Der Verzicht auf systematisierende Kritik erzeugt denn auch den Eindruck von Beliebigkeit, den die meisten aktuellen sogenannten kulturwissenschaftlichen Arbeiten vermitteln

Early Career Attainments of Employees who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing Ten Years After College: Some Preliminary Findings

This paper addresses questions about the early career attainments and attitudes of a sample of 325 deaf and hard of hearing workers with postsecondary training and education. The overall goal is to identify the strategies that create job change and career advancement opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing workers. Specific questions addressed include: what kinds of jobs do these alumni have and what are their earnings? What are their attitudes about their jobs? How long have they worked on these jobs and have they been promoted? Overall, descriptive information bearing on these and similar questions suggest that postsecondary training and education has been effective as a strategy for early career preparation and advancement. Two other common strategies for career advancement seem evident: working for larger employers and having a willingness to make a long-term commitment to a career with the same employer

Dekonstruktion der Cartesianischen Anthropologie durch La Rochefoucauld

Descartes' Abhandlung über die menschliche Emotionalität hätte den krönenden Abschluß seines Lebenswerks bilden sollen. Wie Pascal einwendet, ist es jedoch gerade der "esprit de géometrie", der diese rationalistische Theorie der Gefühle zum Scheitern verurteilt. Allerdings, so wird argumentiert, habe bereits Descartes selbst die Unmöglichkeit seines Systems geahnt und damit einen Teil von Foucaults Kritik daran gewissermaßen vorweggenommen. La Rochefoucauld wird sodann als Initiator einer Gegenbewegung gegen Descartes vorgestellt, der bereits im Herzen der französischen Klassik die Oppositionen von Sein und Schein, von Ich und Nicht-Ich, von Eigentlichkeit und Uneigentlichkeit zu destruieren beginnt. Obwohl La Rochefoucaulds Aphorismen einer gewissen Systematisierung fähig sind, findet, so wird in einem Ausblick festegestellt, erst mit Rousseau dieser Versuch einer prozessualen Anthropologie einen ersten systematischen Ausdruck

Für Foucault liegt den Human- und Geisteswissenschaften der illusorische Glaube zugrunde, daß der Weg des Bewußtseins durch die Geschichte im modernen, autonomen menschlichen Subjekt gipfle und ende. Ziel des Aufsatzes ist zu zeigen, daß Foucault zwar in "Les mots et les choses" zu Recht einen bestimmten Subjektbegriff attackiert, aber darüber eine andere Subjekttheorie übersieht, die durch seine Ausführungen auch ermöglicht wird

Rare-Event Sampling: Occupation-Based Performance Measures for Parallel Tempering and Infinite Swapping Monte Carlo Methods

In the present paper we identify a rigorous property of a number of tempering-based Monte Carlo sampling methods, including parallel tempering as well as partial and infinite swapping. Based on this property we develop a variety of performance measures for such rare-event sampling methods that are broadly applicable, informative, and straightforward to implement. We illustrate the use of these performance measures with a series of applications involving the equilibrium properties of simple Lennard-Jones clusters, applications for which the performance levels of partial and infinite swapping approaches are found to be higher than those of conventional parallel tempering.Comment: 18 figure
