Understanding Dyslexia as a Neurological Learning Disability: A Plan for an Instructive Website for Parents and Early Elementary Teachers

The learning disability known as ā€œdyslexiaā€ is often misunderstood by parents and educators. Dyslexia is a life-long, neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a deficit in phonological awareness and processing. Its likely causes are genetic as well as environmental. Other conditions known to co-occur with dyslexia are Speech and Language Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, memory problems, and others. In order for children with dyslexia to reach their highest reading potential, the disorder must be remediated before age seven or eight using intensive, explicit reading interventions. Teachers and other education professionals, using prescribed screening instruments, can identify phonological awareness and processing problems in children as early as preschool. Children with reading disabilities often experience reading anxiety. Knowledgeable teachers and parents can provide emotional support by creating a fun-loving and positive atmosphere when engaging in reading activities

AbstractIn this report direct photo-induced formation of surface relief gratings (SRG) in thin layers of arsenic sulfide (As2S3) are shown. This anisotropic light-induced mass transfer phenomenon has been discussed with the special attention focused on the polarization and intensity of the corresponding light. The experimental setup for the SRG recording is straight-forward consisting of ~10Ī¼m optical slit through which an unfocused beam of light is projected on the surface of sample. The evolution of surface relief in dependence from the recording time and polarization has been investigated in detail. The processes of SRG formation and mass transfer which are based on the photo-induced plasticity have discussed

PURPOSE: With estimates of the prevalence of dyslexia being as high as 7% of the school-age population, it is imperative that educators and parents have accurate and current knowledge about the nature of reading disabilities and the specific needs of children who have been diagnosed with or who are suspected of having developmental dyslexia. The purpose of this project is to develop a website that will serve as a clearinghouse of information about dyslexia for teachers and parents of early elementary children. PROCEDURES: Guidelines for website content include the sociocultural learning theory of Lev Vygotsky as well as the latest research by neuroscientists on causes and remediation methods for the symptoms of dyslexia. Information regarding the website will be presented to teachers throughout the school year during staff meetings. Teachers will hand out business cards for the website to parents during conferences and IEP meetings so that they know how to access the site. OUTCOME: The expected outcomes of this project are to help parents and teachers recognize the common signs of dyslexia, dispel myths about dyslexia, describe the importance of early identification and intervention, establish dyslexia as a neurological deficit, and to present resources and strategies that can help mitigate the psychological and academic damages that dyslexia can cause. IMPACT: Early elementary school teachers can do much to ameliorate the effects of dyslexia if they have the right information. This website will help teachers ensure that dyslexic children have the best chance for successful outcomes in school and life

The key element for the production of surface-relief holographic optical elements is photoresist. The changes of the chemical properties induced in resist material by a light or e-beam exposure enable the surface-relief structuring by wet or dry etching. This process includes two steps: holographic recording and development by etching. Recently a number of organic and inorganic materials have been studied for direct surface-relief formation during the exposure process by a light or e-beam (for example [1., 2.]). It is very promising for practical application enabling the possibility to simplify the surface-relief formation technology. In this report the study of direct holographic recording of the surface-relief gratings on amorphous As-S films has been presented. The influence of the film thickness (0.5 ā€“ 10 um), laser wavelength (from 405nm to 650nm), grating period, light intensity and polarization state on the relief formation were studied. It is shown that the efficiency of the surface-relief formation strongly depends on the light intensity and polarization of light. Also we take a look at reversibility of this process by using wave plates. The study of the surface-relief formation induced by YAG laser (532nm Verdi-6) was performed. The mechanism of the direct recording of surface-relief on amorphous chalcogenide films based on the photo-induced plasticity has been discussed

Amorfie halkogenÄ«di; tieÅ”ais ieraksts; difrakcijas efektivitāteThe dissertation is based on direct recording phenomenon, which objective is to do a research on the amorphous chalcogenide susceptibility to light. As one of the research methods, a direct holographic record will be used, i.e., creating surface relief in chalcogenides directly without any additional processing, like etching. Complete development of this method opens wide range of usage possibilities in optical element production and utilization, as well as in introduction of new and innovative technologies. There is still a lot of interesting phenomena in amorphous chalcogenide that are not well understood and explained in a microscopic level and so this work will be directly involved in the process of research. Record efficiency dependence from its parameters (intensity, polarization) and recording conditions will be examined. Optical properties for obtained nanostructures will be studied, such as transmission, reflection, diffraction efficiency, etc. The obtained structures will be viewed by atomic force microscopy, determining their shape and size.
