    Stability of Negative Image Equilibria in Spike-Timing Dependent Plasticity

    We investigate the stability of negative image equilibria in mean synaptic weight dynamics governed by spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP). The neural architecture of the model is based on the electrosensory lateral line lobe (ELL) of mormyrid electric fish, which forms a negative image of the reafferent signal from the fish's own electric discharge to optimize detection of external electric fields. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for stability, for arbitrary postsynaptic potential functions and arbitrary learning rules.     Breaking Synchrony by Heterogeneity in Complex Networks

    For networks of pulse-coupled oscillators with complex connectivity, we demonstrate that in the presence of coupling heterogeneity precisely timed periodic firing patterns replace the state of global synchrony that exists in homogenous networks only. With increasing disorder, these patterns persist until they reach a critical temporal extent that is of the order of the interaction delay. For stronger disorder these patterns cease to exist and only asynchronous, aperiodic states are observed. We derive self-consistency equations to predict the precise temporal structure of a pattern from the network heterogeneity. Moreover, we show how to design heterogenous coupling architectures to create an arbitrary prescribed pattern.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Supervised Learning in Multilayer Spiking Neural Networks

    The current article introduces a supervised learning algorithm for multilayer spiking neural networks. The algorithm presented here overcomes some limitations of existing learning algorithms as it can be applied to neurons firing multiple spikes and it can in principle be applied to any linearisable neuron model. The algorithm is applied successfully to various benchmarks, such as the XOR problem and the Iris data set, as well as complex classifications problems. The simulations also show the flexibility of this supervised learning algorithm which permits different encodings of the spike timing patterns, including precise spike trains encoding.Comment: 38 pages, 4 figure

    The Spike Response Model: A Framework to Predict Neuronal Spike Trains

    We propose a simple method to map a generic threshold model, namely the Spike Response Model, to artificial data of neuronal activity using a minimal amount of a priori information. Here, data are generated by a detailed mathematical model of neuronal activity. The model neuron is driven with in-vivo-like current injected, and we test to which extent it is possible to predict the spike train of the detailed neuron model from that of the Spike Response Model. In particular, we look at the number of spikes correctly predicted within a biologically relevant time window. We find that the Spike Response Model achieves prediction of up to 80%80\% of the spikes with correct timing (±2\pm2ms). Other characteristics of activity, such as mean rate and coefficient of variation of spike trains, are predicted in the correct range as well

    A bio-inspired image coder with temporal scalability

    We present a novel bio-inspired and dynamic coding scheme for static images. Our coder aims at reproducing the main steps of the visual stimulus processing in the mammalian retina taking into account its time behavior. The main novelty of this work is to show how to exploit the time behavior of the retina cells to ensure, in a simple way, scalability and bit allocation. To do so, our main source of inspiration will be the biologically plausible retina model called Virtual Retina. Following a similar structure, our model has two stages. The first stage is an image transform which is performed by the outer layers in the retina. Here it is modelled by filtering the image with a bank of difference of Gaussians with time-delays. The second stage is a time-dependent analog-to-digital conversion which is performed by the inner layers in the retina. Thanks to its conception, our coder enables scalability and bit allocation across time. Also, our decoded images do not show annoying artefacts such as ringing and block effects.     Topological Speed Limits to Network Synchronization

    We study collective synchronization of pulse-coupled oscillators interacting on asymmetric random networks. We demonstrate that random matrix theory can be used to accurately predict the speed of synchronization in such networks in dependence on the dynamical and network parameters. Furthermore, we show that the speed of synchronization is limited by the network connectivity and stays finite, even if the coupling strength becomes infinite. In addition, our results indicate that synchrony is robust under structural perturbations of the network dynamics.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Modelling Path Integrator Recalibration Using Hippocampal Place cells

    The firing activities of place cells in the rat hippocampus exhibit strong correlations to the animal's location. External (e.g. visual) as well as internal (proprioceptive and vestibular) sensory information take part in controlling hippocampal place fields. Previously it has been observed that when rats shuttle between a movable origin and a fixed target the hippocampus encodes position in two different frames of reference. This paper presents a new model of hippocampal place cells that explains place coding in multiple reference frames by continuous interaction between visual and self-motion information. The model is tested using a simulated mobile robot in a real-world experimental paradigm

    Robust self-localisation and navigation based on hippocampal place cells

    A computational model of the hippocampal function in spatial learning is presented. A spatial representation is incrementally acquired during exploration. Visual and self-motion information is fed into a network of rate-coded neurons. A consistent and stable place code emerges by unsupervised Hebbian learning between place- and head direction cells. Based on this representation, goal-oriented navigation is learnt by applying a reward-based learning mechanism between the hippocampus and nucleus accumbens. The model, validated on a real and simulated robot, successfully localises itself by recalibrating its path integrator using visual input. A navigation map is learnt after about 20 trials, comparable to rats in the water maze. In contrast to previous works, this system processes realistic visual input. No compass is needed for localisation and the reward-based learning mechanism extends discrete navigation models to continuous space. The model reproduces experimental findings and suggests several neurophysiological and behavioural predictions in the rat. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd
