Population ecology of Psammobates oculifer in a semi-arid environment
We studied the ecology of Psammobates oculifer over 13 months near Kimberley, South Africa, to ascertain if the populationâs life history traits conform to chelonian patterns in arid environments. Capture rates were highest in spring and lowest in winter when environmental conditions were respectively most and least favourable for tortoise activity. Body condition did not change from autumn to spring, but reached lower values during the summer drought. Capture effort averaged 5 hours/tortoise, which corresponds closely to that of species with low population densities in arid regions. Population size structure was skewed towards adults, indicative of low recruitment and/or low juvenile survivorship. Females were larger and heavier than males, confirming sexual dimorphism in this species. Body size of cohorts scaled to annuli counts, indicating a close correspondence between body size and age. Telemetered adults deposited one or no growth ring in the year of study; consequently, annuli counts could underestimate adult age. Regression analyses showed that male and female growth rates did not differ, but males matured at a smaller size and younger age than females. The smallest male showing reproductive behaviour had 12 annuli and a shell volume of 157 cm3, while similar measures for females were 14 annuli and 185 cm3. The sex ratio of the population did not differ from 1:1 but the bias towards males in spring, and towards females in autumn, indicates that studies limited to particular seasons can misrepresent life history traits of populations. Detection of rabies virus nucleoprotein-RNA in several organs outside the Central Nervous System in naturally-infected vampire bats
Rabies is a neurological disease, but the rabies virus spread to several organs outside the central nervous system (CNS). The rabies virus antigen or RNA has been identified from the salivary glands, the lungs, the kidneys, the heart and the liver. This work aimed to identify the presence of the rabies virus in non-neuronal organs from naturally-infected vampire bats and to study the rabies virus in the salivary glands of healthy vampire bats. Out of the five bats that were positive for rabies in the CNS, by fluorescent antibody test (FAT), viral isolation in N2A cells and reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), 100% (5/5) were positive for rabies in samples of the tongue and the heart, 80% (4/5) in the kidneys, 40% (2/5) in samples of the salivary glands and the lungs, and 20% (1/5) in the liver by RT-PCR test. All the nine bats that were negative for rabies in the CNS, by FAT, viral isolation and RT-PCR were negative for rabies in the salivary glands by RT-PCR test. Possible consequences for rabies epidemiology and pathogenesis are discussed in this work

Farelo integral de arroz parboilizado submetido a armazenamento prolongado para alimentação de codornas de corte
O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a estabilidade oxidativa do farelo integral de arroz parboilizado (FIAP) durante o armazenamento e os efeitos do seu uso na alimentação de codornas de corte. Foram utilizados 245 animais com sete dias de idade, de ambos os sexos, distribuĂdos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos, em arranjo fatorial 2x2+1, e sete repetiçþes de sete aves. Avaliaram-se os seguintes tratamentos: dieta controle, sem adição de FIAP; e nĂveis de inclusĂŁo, na dieta controle, de 10 e 20% de FIAP armazenado por 180 dias (FIAPA) ou de FIAP novo (FIAPN). Houve oxidação lipĂdica do FIAP durante o armazenamento, e o Ăndice de acidez foi de 4,25 e 63,50 (% em ĂĄcido oleico) e o de perĂłxido foi de 15,64 e 38,28 meq kg-1 para FIAPN e FIAPA, respectivamente. A inclusĂŁo do FIAP resultou em menor digestibilidade da matĂŠria seca e do nitrogĂŞnio e em maior valor de energia metabolizĂĄvel da ração, em comparação Ă ração controle. A inclusĂŁo de 20% de FIAPA resultou em menor energia metabolizĂĄvel da ração do que a adição do FIAPN. As inclusĂľes nĂŁo influenciaram desempenho, caracterĂsticas da carcaça, pesos relativos do fĂgado e do pâncreas, e crescimento e qualidade Ăłssea. O FIAPA, mesmo com rancidez, pode ser utilizado na alimentação de codornas de corte em nĂveis de atĂŠ 20% de inclusĂŁo
