The B+−Bd0 lifetime difference beyond leading logarithms

    Get PDF
We compute perturbative QCD corrections to the lifetime splitting between the charged and neutral B meson in the framework of the heavy quark expansion. These next-to-leading logarithmic corrections are necessary for a meaningful use of hadronic matrix elements of local operators from lattice gauge theory. We find the uncertainties associated with the choices of renormalization scale and scheme significantly reduced compared to the leading-order result. We include the full dependence on the charm-quark mass mc without any approximations. Using hadronic matrix elements estimated in the literature with lattice QCD we obtain τ(B+)/τ(B0d)=1.053±0.016±0.017, where the effects of unquenching and 1/mb corrections are not yet included. The lifetime difference of heavy baryons Ξ0b and Ξ−b is also briefly discussed

Lacustrine diatom oxygen isotopes as palaeo precipitation proxy - Holocene environmental and snowmelt variations recorded at Lake Bolshoye Shchuchye, Polar Urals, Russia

    Get PDF
The diatom oxygen isotope composition (δ18Odiatom) from lacustrine sediments helps tracing the hydrological and climate dynamics in individual lake catchments, and is generally linked to changes in temperature and δ18Olake. Lake Bolshoye Shchuchye (67°53′N; 66°19′ E; 186 m a.s.l) is the largest and deepest freshwater reservoir in the Polar Urals, Arctic Russia. The diatom oxygen isotope interpretation is supported by modern (isotope) hydrology, local bioindicators such as chironomids, isotope mass-balance modelling and a digital elevation model of the catchment. The Bolshoye Shchuchye δ18Odiatom record generally follows a decrease in summer insolation and the northern hemisphere (NH) temperature history. However, it displays exceptional, short-term variations exceeding 5‰, especially in Mid and Late Holocene. This centennial-scale variability occurs roughly contemporaneously with and similar in frequency to Holocene NH glacier advances. However, larger Holocene glacier advances in the Lake Bolshoye Shchuchye catchment are unknown and have not left any significant imprint on the lake sediment record. As Lake Bolshoye Shchuchye is deep and voluminous, about 30–50% of its volume needs to be exchanged with isotopically different water within decades to account for these shifts in the δ18Odiatom record. A plausible source of water with light isotope composition inflow is snow, known to be transported in surplus by snow redistribution from the windward to the leeward side of the Polar Urals. Here, we propose snow melt variability and associated influx changes being the dominant mechanism responsible for the observed short-term changes in the δ18Odiatom record. This is the first time such drastic, centennial-scale hydrological changes in a catchment have been identified in Holocene lacustrine diatom oxygen isotopes, which, for Lake Bolshoye Shchuchye, are interpreted as proxy for palaeo precipitation and, on millennial timescales, for summer temperatures

Regionale Verteilung der Bakterien-Abundanz und Aktivität in der Unterelbe und Unterweser: Ein Vergleich zwischen beiden Ästuaren (=Regional distribution of bacterial abundance and activity in the Lower Elbe and Weser Rivers A comparison between both estuaries)

Cardiac T1 mapping enables risk prediction of LV dysfunction after surgery for aortic regurgitation

    Get PDF
Background To assess whether cardiac T1 mapping for detecting myocardial fibrosis enables preoperative identification of patients at risk for early left ventricular dysfunction after surgery of aortic regurgitation. Methods 1.5 Tesla cardiac magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 40 consecutive aortic regurgitation patients before aortic valve surgery. Native and post-contrast T1 mapping was performed using a modified Look-Locker inversion-recovery sequence. Serial echocardiography was performed at baseline and 8 ± 5 days after aortic valve surgery to quantify LV dysfunction. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to determine the diagnostic accuracy of native T1 mapping and extracellular volume for predicting postoperative LV ejection fraction decrease >−10% after aortic valve surgery. Results Native T1 was significantly increased in patients with a postoperatively decreased LVEF (n = 15) vs. patients with a preserved postoperative LV ejection fraction (n = 25) (i.e., 1,071 ± 67 ms vs. 1,019 ± 33 ms, p = .001). Extracellular volume was not significantly different between patients with preserved vs. decreased postoperative LV ejection fraction. With a cutoff-of value of 1,053 ms, native T1 yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of .820 (95% CI: .683–.958) for differentiating between patients with preserved vs. reduced LV ejection fraction with 70% sensitivity and 84% specificity. Conclusion Increased preoperative native T1 is associated with a significantly higher risk of systolic LV dysfunction early after aortic valve surgery in aortic regurgitation patients. Native T1 could be a promising tool to optimize the timing of aortic valve surgery in patients with aortic regurgitation to prevent early postoperative LV dysfunction

An analysis of Brazilian sugarcane bagasse ash behavior under thermal gasification.

    Get PDF
Background: Ashes from sugarcane were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence, ash content, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). FactSage 6.4 database software was used to estimate viscosity at high temperatures (900 - 1550°C) of them. Results: The results showed that although ashes from sugarcane bagasse contain silica, most of its SiO2 is from soil contamination. Higher and lower silica samples treated at 1350°C for 20 minutes showed that the fine portion of fraction of the ashes melted at this temperature. Conclusions: The melting phase could act as sticking flux for the coarse silica particles on the gasifier bottom wall, which could compromise the gasification process

The aicardi syndrome: Report of 4 cases and review of the literature

The findings in 4 cases of Aicardi syndrome (female infants with mental retardation, seizures, characteristic eye lesions, agenesis of the corpus callosum, vertebral anomalies, and abnormal but nondiagnostic electroencephalographic patterns) are compared to 39 previously reported cases. Available information suggests tha the syndrome results from an unknown intrauterine insult occurring no later than the first trimester. No familial cases have been reported, and the cause remains unknown.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/50294/1/410050513_ftp.pd
