    Portrayals of The Dehumanization of The American Prisoner in Miguel Piñero\u27s “Short Eyes” and Tom Fontana\u27s “Oz”

    This thesis analyzes the way in which Miguel Piñero, through his 1974 play Short Eyes, and Tom Fontana, through his television series Oz, portray the way in which American prisoners are transformed by a racially-defined code of behavior. This code of behavior, defined by Miguel Piñero as “the program” encourages inmates to over-identify themselves in terms of race and leads them to engage in behavior that contributes to their dehumanization. In the first chapter, the introduction, I establish the social, political, and theoretical concepts through which it is possible to analyze the process of prisoner identity transformation in these two works. In chapter two, I describe the process in which a prisoner’s identity is divided through a reading of the both works using social identity theory. In the third chapter, I describe the way in which the program and its emphasis on race shape the creation of prison identities

    Heuristic Ranking in Tightly Coupled Probabilistic Description Logics

    The Semantic Web effort has steadily been gaining traction in the recent years. In particular,Web search companies are recently realizing that their products need to evolve towards having richer semantic search capabilities. Description logics (DLs) have been adopted as the formal underpinnings for Semantic Web languages used in describing ontologies. Reasoning under uncertainty has recently taken a leading role in this arena, given the nature of data found on theWeb. In this paper, we present a probabilistic extension of the DL EL++ (which underlies the OWL2 EL profile) using Markov logic networks (MLNs) as probabilistic semantics. This extension is tightly coupled, meaning that probabilistic annotations in formulas can refer to objects in the ontology. We show that, even though the tightly coupled nature of our language means that many basic operations are data-intractable, we can leverage a sublanguage of MLNs that allows to rank the atomic consequences of an ontology relative to their probability values (called ranking queries) even when these values are not fully computed. We present an anytime algorithm to answer ranking queries, and provide an upper bound on the error that it incurs, as well as a criterion to decide when results are guaranteed to be correct.Comment: Appears in Proceedings of the Twenty-Eighth Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence (UAI2012

    Metabolic syndrome and body composition measurements in Blue-Collar Workers from a Metal-Mechanic Factory in Soledad.

    Introduction: Data regarding the incidence of MetS and the relationship with some body composition measurements in blue-collar workers from Soledad were obtained, as part of a wider research. Methods: Data on weight (W), height (H), BMI, waist, hip, WHR, percent body fat (%BF), fat mass, blood pressure (BP), fasting blood glucose (FBG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and triglycerides (TG) were obtained from 236 male blue-collar workers in a metal-mechanic factory at Soledad, a municipality of Departamento del Atlántico in the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The Adult Treatment Panel III (2001) definition for metabolic syndrome was used. Metabolic Syndrome components (MetS) and correlations with body composition measurements were calculated. Results: The overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 20.7% (95%CI=15%, 26%). Waist circumference above 102 cm. was found in 11.8% (95%CI=7.5%, 16.2%); 43.2% (95%CI=36.6%, 49.7%) had triglycerides levels greater than 150 mg/dl., blood pressure ? 130/85 was found in 10.2% (95%CI=6.1%, 14.2%) and FBG >100 mg/dl in 10.5% (95%CI=6.4%, 14.7%). BMI and %BF correlates well with waist, BP, FBG and TG. Conclusions: Prevalence of MetS in this blue-collar workers sample at Soledad is in agreement with other papers published in Colombia as well as in other countries. Abdominal obesity was below the national data. In this population, BMI and %BF could be a good proxy to evaluate MetS

    Wind Power Cogeneration to Reduce Peak Electricity Demand in Mexican States Along the Gulf of Mexico

    The Energetic Transition Law in Mexico has established that in the next years, the country has to produce at least 35% of its energy from clean sources in 2024. Based on this, a proposal in this study is the cogeneration between the principal thermal power plants along the Mexican states of the Gulf of Mexico with modeled wind farms near to these thermal plants with the objective to reduce peak electricity demand. These microscale models were done with hourly MERRA-2 data that included wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and atmospheric pressure with records from 1980–2018 and taking into account roughness, orography, and climatology of the site. Wind speed daily profile for each model was compared to electricity demand trajectory, and it was seen that wind speed has a peak at the same time. The amount of power delivered to the electric grid with this cogeneration in Rio Bravo and Altamira (Northeast region) is 2657.02 MW and for Tuxpan and Dos Bocas from the Eastern region is 3196.18 MW. This implies a reduction at the peak demand. In the Northeast region, the power demand at the peak is 8000 MW, and for Eastern region 7200 MW. If wind farms and thermal power plants work at the same time in Northeast and Eastern regions, the amount of power delivered by other sources of energy at this moment will be 5342.98 MW and 4003.82 MW, respectively

    Allocation of Distributed Generation for Maximum Reduction of Energy Losses in Distribution Systems

    The analysis of actual distribution systems with penetration of distributed generation requires powerful tools with capabilities that until very recently were not available in distribution software tools; for instance, probabilistic and time mode simulations. This chapter presents the application of parallel computing to the allocation of distributed generation for maximum reduction of energy losses in distribution system when the system is evaluated during a given period (e.g., the target is to minimize energy losses for periods equal or longer than 1 year). The simulations have been carried out using OpenDSS, a freely available software tool for distribution system studies, when it is driven as a COM DLL from MATLAB using a multicore installation. The chapter details a MATLAB–OpenDSS procedure for allocation of photovoltaic (PV) generation in distribution systems using a parallel Monte Carlo approach and assuming that loads are voltage‐dependent. The main goals are to check the viability of a Monte Carlo method in some studies for which parallel computing can be advantageously applied and propose a simple procedure for minimization of energy losses in distribution systems

    La obesidad se ha enfocado por la sociedad como un problema de apariencia física, pero ante todo es una enfermedad que incide directamente en la esperanza y calidad de vida de quien la sufre y de un gran impacto social y económico. Desde hace alrededor de dos décadas, la obesidad se esta manifestando en asocio con la pobreza. El articulo hace un análisis de los factores que influyen en el desarrollo de la obesidad en las personas de menores ingresos y las repercusiones desde el punto de vista de la salud que esta tiene sobre los individuos. Se concluye que diversos factores repercuten en este problema: genéticos, ambientales, socio-culturales y de género. Se deben establecer políticas de salud tendientes a fortalecer los hábitos saludables y a educar mediante los medios a la población
