    When Does Oxytocin Affect Human Memory Encoding? The Role of Social Context and Individual Attachment Style

    The neuropeptide oxytocin plays an essential role in regulating social behavior and has been implicated in a variety of human cognitive processes in the social domain, including memory processes. The present study investigates the influence of oxytocin on human memory encoding, taking into account social context and personality, which have previously been neglected as moderators for how oxytocin affects memory encoding. To examine the role of social context of encoding, we employed an established experimental paradigm in which participants perform a word-categorization task in either a joint (social) or individual (non-social) setting. To investigate the role of socially relevant personality factors, participants’ adult attachment style (AAS) was assessed. Previous research has identified attachment style as a potent moderator of oxytocin effects in the social-cognitive domain, but here we investigated for the first time its role in memory encoding. Participants were invited in pairs and received either placebo or oxytocin intranasally. Forty-five minutes later, they were instructed to react to different word categories within a list of successively presented words. This task was performed individually in the non-social condition and simultaneously with the partner in the social condition. After a 24-h delay, memory for all words was tested individually in a surprise recognition memory test. Oxytocin effects on memory accuracy depended on participants’ AAS. Specifically, oxytocin positively affected memory for participants who scored low on attachment dependence (who find dependence on others uncomfortable), but negatively affected memory for high scorers (who are comfortable depending on others). Oxytocin effects were not moderated by social vs. non-social context at encoding, and we discuss reasons for this outcome. Regardless of encoding condition or personality, oxytocin led to more liberal responding in the recognition memory test, which was also reflected in significantly higher false alarm rates (FARs) and a trend towards higher hit rates (HRs) compared to placebo. Overall, our results are consistent with an interactionist view on oxytocin effects on human cognitive functioning. Future research should further examine how oxytocin affects response biases via previous encoding and the ways in which biological dispositions linked to attachment style affect the process of memory encoding

    Die Autoren untersuchen anhand der Auswertung der Zeitschrift 'Industrielle Psychotechnik' aus den Jahren 1924-1945, wie sich die Psychotechnik, bzw. deren Vertreter von einer objektiven, wertfreien Wissenschaft zu einer den Nationalsozialismus unterstützenden Wissenschaft entwickelt. Ausgehend von der - auch heute noch - von der Wissenschaft für sich beanspruchten Objektivität, weisen die Autoren anhand von Zitaten aus der 'Industriellen Psychotechnik' die politische Funktion der Psychotechnik im Faschismus nach und zeigen, daß im Kapitalismus Arbeitsvorgänge nicht neutral untersucht werden können und die Objektivität daher allein den Unternehmern dient. Unter der Ideologie, daß 'Betrieb und Volksgemeinschaft...alle dem Führer, also einem Interesse (dienen)' bewirkt diese Psychotechnik, daß der einzelne 'funktional in den gesellschaftlichen Gesamtplan eingeordnet werden (muß)'.     The BKG/IGGB VLBI Analysis Center

    In 2012, the activities of the BKG/IGGB VLBI Analysis Center, as in previous years, consisted of routine computations of Earth orientation parameter (EOP) time series and of a number of research topics in geodetic VLBI. The VLBI group at BKG continued its regular submissions of time series of tropospheric parameters and the generation of daily SINEX (Solution INdependent EXchange format) files. Quarterly updated solutions have been computed to produce terrestrial reference frame (TRF) and celestial reference frame (CRF) realizations. Routine computations of the UT1-UTC Intensive observations include all sessions of the Kokee-Wettzell and Tsukuba-Wettzell baselines and the networks Kokee-Svetloe-Wettzell and Ny-degAlesund-Tsukuba-Wettzell. The VLBI group at BKG developed a procedure to get the most probable station positions of Tsukuba after the earthquake on March 11, 2011 for the epochs of the Intensive sessions. The analysis of the Intensive sessions with station Tsukuba could be resumed in February 2012. At IGGB, the emphasis has been placed on individual research topics

    Analysis of mobile laser scanning data and multi-view image reconstruction

    The combination of laser scanning (LS, active, direct 3D measurement of the object surface) and photogrammetry (high geometric and radiometric resolution) is widely applied for object reconstruction (e.g. architecture, topography, monitoring, archaeology). Usually the results are a coloured point cloud or a textured mesh. The geometry is typically generated from the laser scanning point cloud and the radiometric information is the result of image acquisition. In the last years, next to significant developments in static (terrestrial LS) and kinematic LS (airborne and mobile LS) hardware and software, research in computer vision and photogrammetry lead to advanced automated procedures in image orientation and image matching. These methods allow a highly automated generation of 3D geometry just based on image data. Founded on advanced feature detector techniques (like SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform)) very robust techniques for image orientation were established (cf. Bundler). In a subsequent step, dense multi-view stereo reconstruction algorithms allow the generation of very dense 3D point clouds that represent the scene geometry (cf. Patch-based Multi-View Stereo (PMVS2)). Within this paper the usage of mobile laser scanning (MLS) and simultaneously acquired image data for an advanced integrated scene reconstruction is studied. For the analysis the geometry of a scene is generated by both techniques independently. Then, the paper focuses on the quality assessment of both techniques. This includes a quality analysis of the individual surface models and a comparison of the direct georeferencing of the images using positional and orientation data of the on board GNSS-INS system and the indirect georeferencing of the imagery by automatic image orientation. For the practical evaluation a dataset from an archaeological monument is utilised. Based on the gained knowledge a discussion of the results is provided and a future strategy for the integration of both techniques is proposed

    Arterial input function for quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI to diagnose prostate cancer

    PURPOSEThis study aims to analyze the ability of quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) to distinguish between prostate cancer (PCa) and benign lesions in transition zone (TZ) and peripheral zone (PZ) using different methods for arterial input function (AIF) determination. Study endpoints are identification of a standard AIF method and optimal quantitative perfusion parameters for PCa detection.METHODSDCE image data of 50 consecutive patients with PCa who underwent multiparametric MRI were analyzed retrospectively with three different methods of AIF acquisition. First, a region of interest was manually defined in an artery (AIFm); second, an automated algorithm was used (AIFa); and third, a population-based AIF (AIFp) was applied. Values of quantitative parameters after Tofts (Ktrans, ve, and kep) in PCa, PZ, and TZ in the three different AIFs were analyzed.RESULTSKtrans and kep were significantly higher in PCa than in benign tissue independent from the AIF method. Whereas in PZ, Ktrans and kep could differentiate PCa (P < .001), in TZ only kep using AIFpdemonstrated a significant difference (P = .039). The correlations of the perfusion parameters that resulted from AIFm and AIFa were higher than those that resulted from AIFp, and the absolute values of Ktrans, kep, and ve were significantly lower when using AIFp. The values of quantitative perfusion parameters for PCa were similar regardless of whether PCa was located in PZ or TZ.CONCLUSIONKtrans and kep were able to differentiate PCa from benign PZ independent of the AIF method. AIFaseems to be the most feasible method of AIF determination in clinical routine. For TZ, none of the quantitative perfusion parameters provided satisfying results

    European Cystic Fibrosis Society standards of care: best practice guidelines

    Specialised CF care has led to a dramatic improvement in survival in CF: in the last four decades, well above what was seen in the general population over the same period. With the implementation of newborn screening in many European countries, centres are increasingly caring for a cohort of patients who have minimal lung disease at diagnosis and therefore have the potential to enjoy an excellent quality of life and an even greater life expectancy than was seen previously. To allow high quality care to be delivered throughout Europe, a landmark document was published in 2005 that sets standards of care. Our current document builds on this work, setting standards for best practice in key aspects of CF care. The objective of our document is to give a broad overview of the standards expected for screening, diagnosis, pre-emptive treatment of lung disease, nutrition, complications, transplant/end of life care and psychological support. For comprehensive details of clinical care of CF, references to the most up to date European Consensus Statements, Guidelines or Position Papers are provided in Table 1. We hope that this best practice document will be useful to clinical teams both in countries where CF care is developing and those with established CF centres
