Electromagnetic Gauge Invariance of the Cloudy Bag Model

    Get PDF
We examine the question of the gauge invariance of electromagnetic form factors calculated within the cloudy bag model. One of the assumptions of the model is that electromagnetic form factors are most accurately evaluated in the Breit frame. This feature is used to show that gauge invariance is respected in this frame.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex, 1 figure, to be published in Phys. Rev.

Non-Newtonian ice rheology and the retention of craters on Ganymede

    Get PDF
Calculations carried out for craters of varying sizes in a medium with constant temperature T = 173 K yield values for the crater relaxation time t sub e (defined as the time required for the crater depth to become 1/e of its original value) that appear to be too small to account for the observed retention of craters on Ganymede and the other icy satellites. Such a calculation is seriously in conflict with the observed crater population of the surfaces of the icy satellites. In an attempt to reconcile this conflict, possible explanations for the much slower relaxation rate of craters on the icy satellites are considered. It is possible that an admixture of silicates in the surface ice regions of the icy satellites may raise the viscosity to some extent. This possible explanation and others are briefly discussed

    IAPSA 2 small-scale system specification

    Get PDF
The details of a hardware implementation of a representative small scale flight critical system is described using Advanced Information Processing System (AIPS) building block components and simulated sensor/actuator interfaces. The system was used to study application performance and reliability issues during both normal and faulted operation

Computing Preferred Answer Sets by Meta-Interpretation in Answer Set Programming

Most recently, Answer Set Programming (ASP) is attracting interest as a new paradigm for problem solving. An important aspect which needs to be supported is the handling of preferences between rules, for which several approaches have been presented. In this paper, we consider the problem of implementing preference handling approaches by means of meta-interpreters in Answer Set Programming. In particular, we consider the preferred answer set approaches by Brewka and Eiter, by Delgrande, Schaub and Tompits, and by Wang, Zhou and Lin. We present suitable meta-interpreters for these semantics using DLV, which is an efficient engine for ASP. Moreover, we also present a meta-interpreter for the weakly preferred answer set approach by Brewka and Eiter, which uses the weak constraint feature of DLV as a tool for expressing and solving an underlying optimization problem. We also consider advanced meta-interpreters, which make use of graph-based characterizations and often allow for more efficient computations. Our approach shows the suitability of ASP in general and of DLV in particular for fast prototyping. This can be fruitfully exploited for experimenting with new languages and knowledge-representation formalisms.Comment: 34 pages, appeared as a Technical Report at KBS of the Vienna University of Technology, see http://www.kr.tuwien.ac.at/research/reports

Recognizing female sexuality: at 313, the maid as mentor in the young man's maturation

AT 313, The Girl as Helper in the Hero’s Flight, amongst the longest of Märchen, is also rich with complex symbolism, and requires, for a comprehensive interpretation, a much fuller treatment than can be adequately contained within the prescribed twenty minutes. It is for this reason that I focus principally on one aspect of the tale’s meaning, summarized in the first part of my title, Recognizing Female Sexuality. The second part of my title AT 313, The Maid as Mentor in the Young Man’s Maturation aptly summarizes what I feel would be an appropriate renaming of the tale type, if such a renaming were based uniquely on versions of the tale I or my students have collected from French Newfoundlanders over an almost thirty year period, and if, more pertinently, there was sufficient scholarly agreement on the meaning and function of the tale. In focussing on female sexuality in the tale, however, I wish to stress not only its centrality to an understanding of the tale’s meaning, but also the crucial significance of the relationship between tale interpretation and what Bengt Holbek called “the storytelling community.

Respiratory and humoral immune response to aerosol and intramuscular pertussis vaccine

    Get PDF
Animal experiments have shown that respiratory administration of pertussis antigen induces a protective immune response. In this study pertussis antibody in human respiratory secretions was measured and the response to aerosol and intramuscular pertussis immunization investigated. Substantial increases in this antibody occurred after aerosol immunization but no changes were found in serum antibody. The reverse was observed after intramuscular immunization. Severe side effects are frequently seen after intramuscular pertussis vaccine in adults but not with aerosol immunization. The latter method may be of value for paediatric medical and nursing personnel exposed to the risk of pertussis infectio
