    Uncertainty dynamics in a model of economic inequality

    In this article, we consider a stylized dynamic model to describe the economics of a population, expressed by a Langevin-type kinetic equation. The dynamics is defined by a combination of terms, one of which represents monetary exchanges between individuals mutually engaged in trade, while the uncertainty in barter (trade exchange) is modelled through additive and multiplicative stochastic terms which necessarily abide dynamical constraints. The model is studied to estimate three meaningful quantities, the inequality Gini index, the social mobility and the total income of the population. In particular, we investigate the time evolving binary correlations between any two of these quantities

    The impact of secondary ice production on Arctic stratocumulus

    In situ measurements of Arctic clouds frequently show that ice crystal number concentrations (ICNCs) are much higher than the number of available ice-nucleating particles (INPs), suggesting that secondary ice production (SIP) may be active. Here we use a Lagrangian parcel model (LPM) and a large-eddy simulation (LES) to investigate the impact of three SIP mechanisms (rime splintering, break-up from ice–ice collisions and drop shattering) on a summer Arctic stratocumulus case observed during the Aerosol-Cloud Coupling And Climate Interactions in the Arctic (ACCACIA) campaign. Primary ice alone cannot explain the observed ICNCs, and drop shattering is ineffective in the examined conditions. Only the combination of both rime splintering (RS) and collisional break-up (BR) can explain the observed ICNCs, since both of these mechanisms are weak when activated alone. In contrast to RS, BR is currently not represented in large-scale models; however our results indicate that this may also be a critical ice-multiplication mechanism. In general, low sensitivity of the ICNCs to the assumed INP, to the cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) conditions and also to the choice of BR parameterization is found. Finally, we show that a simplified treatment of SIP, using a LPM constrained by a LES and/or observations, provides a realistic yet computationally efficient way to study SIP effects on clouds. This method can eventually serve as a way to parameterize SIP processes in large-scale models

    The role of the CO2 laser in the management of laryngotracheal stenosis: a survey of 100 cases.

    Over the last decade, improvement of CO2 lasers with the microspot and ultrapulse technologies has broadened the indications for endoscopic CO2-laser resection of benign laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS). This article reviews 100 patients treated solely by endoscopic means for a LTS. There were 47 grade III, 41 grade II and 12 grade I stenoses according to the Myer-Cotton classification. The postoperative results show that the improvement to a nearly normal (>80% luminal size) airway declines from 92% (11/12 patients) for grade I to 46% (19/41 patients) for grade II and 13% (6/47 patients) for grade III stenoses. When compared to open surgery for more severe grades of stenosis (31 grade IV, 66 grade III and 3 grade II stenoses), the results of the endoscopy group is much less favorable: 36% of patients in the endoscopy group versus 76% of patients in the open surgery group were rehabilitated to a normal respiration without exertional dyspnea and 38% versus 5% patients remained tracheotomy dependent. However, if strict selection and therapeutic criteria are respected, a significant number of grade I and II stenoses, and to a lesser degree of grade III stenoses, can be improved to a nearly normal airway by endoscopic means only. The endoscopic treatment is potentially less invasive and risky and only needs a short hospital stay. To try this as a first treatment modality in a selected group of patients is worthwhile, provided that this endoscopic treatment is not repeated a second time, if the stenosis recurs to its initial grade after a primary CO2-laser treatment.     Rates and controls of nitrification in a large oligotrophic lake

    Recent discoveries have altered prevailing paradigms concerning the conditions under which nitrification takes place and the organisms responsible for nitrification in aquatic ecosystems. In Lake Superior, nitrate (NO-3) concentrations have increased fivefold in the past century. Although previous evidence indicated that most NO-3 is generated by nitrification within the lake, important questions remain concerning the magnitude and controls of nitrification, and which microbial groups are primarily responsible for this process. We measured water-column nitrification rates in the western basin of Lake Superior during five research cruises from November 2009 to March 2011. Using in situ bottle incubations at 10 depths, we quantified nitrification rates using both the oxidation of 15N-labeled ammonium (NH+4) and the uptake of 14C associated with nitrification. Average rates of NH+4 oxidation ranged from 18-34 nmol N L-1 d-1 across the five cruises, similar to values reported for the coastal ocean, and two orders of magnitude lower than values reported from other lakes. Low nitrification rates observed in the epilimnion corresponded to the absence of ammonium-oxidizing archaea and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. The measured rates of nitrification are \u3e 50-fold greater than the long-term NO-3 rise in the lake, indicating that N is actively cycling and that long-term change in this ecosystem is mediated by internal dynamics. © 2013, by the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography, Inc

    Scrub typhus in South India: clinical and laboratory manifestations, genetic variability, and outcome

    SummaryObjectivesThis study sought to document the clinical and laboratory manifestations, genetic variability, and outcomes of scrub typhus, an often severe infection caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, in South India.MethodsPatients admitted to a large teaching hospital with IgM ELISA-confirmed scrub typhus were evaluated. Clinical examination with a thorough search for an eschar, laboratory testing, chest X-ray, and outcome were documented and analyzed. Additionally, a 410-bp region of the 56-kDa type-specific antigen gene of O. tsutsugamushi was sequenced and compared with isolates from other regions of Asia.ResultsMost of the 154 patients evaluated presented with fever and non-specific symptoms. An eschar was found in 86 (55%) patients. Mild hepatic involvement was seen in most, with other organ involvement including respiratory, cardiovascular, and renal. Multi-organ dysfunction was noted in 59 (38.3%), and the fatality rate was 7.8%. Hypotension requiring vasoactive agents was found to be an independent predictor of mortality (p<0.001). The phylogeny of 26 samples showed 17 (65%) clustering with the Kato-like group and eight (31%) with the Karp-like group.ConclusionsThe presentation of scrub typhus can be variable, often non-specific, but with potentially severe multi-organ dysfunction. Prompt recognition is key to specific treatment and good outcomes. Further study of the circulating strains is essential for the development of a successful vaccine and sensitive point-of-care testing
