Mixture distribution modelling of the sensitivities of a digital 3-axis MEMS accelerometers large batch

    Get PDF
Huge quantities of low-cost analogue or digital MEMS sensors, in the order of millions per week, are produced by manufacturers. Their use is broad, from consumer electronic devices to Industry 4.0, Internet of Things and Smart Cities. In many cases, such sensors have to be calibrated by accredited laboratories to provide traceable measurements. However, at present, such a massive number of sensors cannot be calibrated and large-scale calibration systems and procedures are still missing. A first step to implementing these methods can be based on the distribution of the sensitivities of the large batches produced. Such distribution is also useful for sensor network end-users who need a single sensitivity, with the associated uncertainty, to be attributed to the whole network. Recently, a large batch of 100 digital 3-axis MEMS accelerometers was calibrated with a primary calibration system developed at INRiM and suitable for 3-axis accelerometers. Distributions of their sensitivities as a function of axis and frequency were analyzed and their non-normal behaviour was shown. However, in the preliminary phase of the study, the calibration uncertainties were not considered in these distributions. Therefore, in this paper, a mixture distribution modelling, based on Monte Carlo simulations and aimed at including the calibration uncertainties in the sensitivity distributions, is implemented and the resulting distributions are compared to the previous ones in histogram form. These distributions are also fitted with Johnson's unbounded and bimodal functions to get continuous distributions. This paper represents a further step towards the development of large-scale statistical calibration methods

Stability of a 4 degree of freedom rotor on electrodynamic passive magnetic bearings

Electrodynamic bearings exploit repulsive forces due to eddy currents to produce positive stiffness by passive means without violating the Earnshaw stability criterion. This remarkable characteristic makes this type of bearing a suitable alternative to active magnetic bearings in fields such as kinetic energy storage flywheels, turbo pumps, high speed compressors, among others. However, the suspension can become unstable due to rotating damping. To obtain deeper understanding of this instability phenomenon this paper presents the analysis of stability of a four degree of freedom (4dof) rotor supported by electrodynamic bearings. The 4dof rotor model is coupled to the dynamic model of the eddy current forces generated by the electrodynamic bearing and the stability of the complete system is analyzed. This model is used to study the stability of both cylindrical and conical whirling motion of the rotor. In addition to the well known cylindrical whirl instability the possible occurrence of conical instability is demonstrated. Finally the effects of two stabilization strategies are analyze

Accurate coil springs axial and transverse stiffness measurements with multicomponent testing machines

    Get PDF
Accurate characterization of coil springs, typically in terms of axial and transverse stiffness, is crucial in many applications, in particular in automotive engineering, such as suspensions, vibration reduction, seating, exhaust valves, gear engagement controls, transmission hose, fuel panels, car trunks, and engine hoods. These measurements are usually performed in spring testing machines along the vertical axis in quasi-static conditions. However, when springs are stressed along the main vertical axis, side forces, bending and torsion moments are generated, thus have to be evaluated. For this reason, a hexapod-shaped multicomponent force and moment transducer has been recently devised, realized and integrated into standard spring testing machines capable to measure the displacement along the main and transverse axes. In this way, forces, moments and displacement components generated by the springs can be measured and axial and transverse stiffness derived. In this work, two multicomponent spring testing machines with the hexapod-shaped force and moment transducer are described and measurements on different large coil springs are presented

Overcritical Rotation of a Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensate

The rotational motion of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate confined by a harmonic trap is investigated by solving the hydrodynamic equations of superfluids, with the irrotationality constraint for the velocity field. We point out the occurrence of an overcritical branch where the system can rotate with angular velocity larger than the oscillator frequencies. We show that in the case of isotropic trapping the system exhibits a bifurcation from an axisymmetric to a triaxial configuration, as a consequence of the interatomic forces. The dynamical stability of the rotational motion with respect to the dipole and quadrupole oscillations is explicitly discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 3 postscript figure

Lack of reliable clinical predictors to identify obstructive sleep apnea in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea is common among patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and may contribute to poor cardiovascular outcomes. However, obstructive sleep apnea is largely unrecognized in this population. We sought to identify the clinical predictors of obstructive sleep apnea among patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. METHODS: Consecutive patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy were recruited from a tertiary University Hospital and were evaluated using validated sleep questionnaires (Berlin and Epworth) and overnight portable monitoring. Ninety patients (males, 51%; age, 46±15 years; body mass index, 26.6±4.9 kg/m2) were included, and obstructive sleep apnea (respiratory disturbance index ≥15 events/h) was present in 37 patients (41%). RESULTS: Compared with the patients without obstructive sleep apnea, patients with obstructive sleep apnea were older and had higher body mass index, larger waist circumference, larger neck circumference, and higher prevalence of atrial fibrillation. Excessive daytime sleepiness (Epworth scale) was low and similar in the patients with and without obstructive sleep apnea, respectively. The only predictors of obstructive sleep apnea (using a logistic regression analysis) were age ≥45 years (odds ratio [OR], 4.46; 95% confidence interval [CI 95%], 1.47-13.54; p = 0.008) and the presence of atrial fibrillation [OR, 5.37; CI 95%, 1.43-20.12; p = 0.013]. CONCLUSION: Consistent clinical predictors of obstructive sleep apnea are lacking for patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which suggests that objective sleep evaluations should be considered in this population, particularly among elderly patients with atrial fibrillation

Along with the emergence of the covid-19 virus at the beginning of March 2020 in Indonesia, various sectors experienced obstacles, especially in the education sector where since the emergence of the covid-19 virus, the education sector had to undergo significant adjustments, namely by eliminating face-to-face learning and experiencing face-to-face learning adjustment into online learning or what can be called the Study From Home program. This study from home program had to be carried out simultaneously in all regions of Indonesia due to the spread of the Covid-19 virus, which was still high in cases at that time. The study from home program, which was initiated by the government, also involves the parents of the students who attend school. It seems to force parents to supervise when their children are doing online learning. In other words, parents have an important role in this online learning process, because with the assistance of parents when the child is studying online, the child will get an understanding of the material again from the parents who accompany them. Therefore, the role of parents in this study from home program is that they are required to master and operate technology related to the world of education or related to this home school program such as Zoom, Social Media, and Google Meet, etc. We can illustrate this by using descriptive qualitative research, namely by approaching parents and children in RW 32, Teluk Pucung Village, Bekasi City about how they feel and what the impact is after undergoing the online school program that continues to date. The result of this study is that the majority of parents in RW 32 Teluk Pucung Urban Village, Bekasi City understand their role as a companion for children when they are in online school. They are also able to operate online learning media (Google Classroom, Google Meet, Zoom, etc.) because the school provides education to parents regarding the media used during online learning. And for a small number of parents who do not know technology, they usually ask for help from relatives/neighbors to help their children in the online learning process

Search-Based Motion Planning for Performance Autonomous Driving

Driving on the limits of vehicle dynamics requires predictive planning of future vehicle states. In this work, a search-based motion planning is used to generate suitable reference trajectories of dynamic vehicle states with the goal to achieve the minimum lap time on slippery roads. The search-based approach enables to explicitly consider a nonlinear vehicle dynamics model as well as constraints on states and inputs so that even challenging scenarios can be achieved in a safe and optimal way. The algorithm performance is evaluated in simulated driving on a track with segments of different curvatures.Comment: Accepted to IAVSD 201
