    Sub-gap spectroscopy of thermally excited quasiparticles in a Nb contacted carbon nanotube quantum dot

    We present electronic transport measurements of a single wall carbon nanotube quantum dot coupled to Nb superconducting contacts. For temperatures comparable to the superconducting gap peculiar transport features are observed inside the Coulomb blockade and superconducting energy gap regions. The observed temperature dependence can be explained in terms of sequential tunneling processes involving thermally excited quasiparticles. In particular, these new channels give rise to two unusual conductance peaks at zero bias in the vicinity of the charge degeneracy point and allow to determine the degeneracy of the ground states involved in transport.     ContextVP: Fully Context-Aware Video Prediction

    Video prediction models based on convolutional networks, recurrent networks, and their combinations often result in blurry predictions. We identify an important contributing factor for imprecise predictions that has not been studied adequately in the literature: blind spots, i.e., lack of access to all relevant past information for accurately predicting the future. To address this issue, we introduce a fully context-aware architecture that captures the entire available past context for each pixel using Parallel Multi-Dimensional LSTM units and aggregates it using blending units. Our model outperforms a strong baseline network of 20 recurrent convolutional layers and yields state-of-the-art performance for next step prediction on three challenging real-world video datasets: Human 3.6M, Caltech Pedestrian, and UCF-101. Moreover, it does so with fewer parameters than several recently proposed models, and does not rely on deep convolutional networks, multi-scale architectures, separation of background and foreground modeling, motion flow learning, or adversarial training.     Elevated temperature clears chytrid fungus infections from tadpoles of the midwife toad, Alytes obstetricans

    The amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is sensitive to high temperature. Hence, exposing amphibians to high temperature may be a method to clear Bd infection. However, the effect of exposure to elevated temperature has never been tested in larval stages or temperate species.We experimentally exposed tadpoles of the toad Alytes obstetricans to low, medium and high temperatures and found that most, but not all, tadpoles lost the infection when exposed to temperatures higher than 26◦C for 5 days. Thus, exposure to elevated temperatures can be used to treat tadpoles against Bd infection

    Secondary phi meson peak as an indicator of QCD phase transition in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

    In a previous paper, we have shown that a double phi peak structure appears in the dilepton invariant mass spectrum if a first order QCD phase transition occurs in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. Furthermore, the transition temperature can be determined from the transverse momentum distribution of the low mass phi peak. In this work, we extend the study to the case that a smooth crossover occurs in the quark-gluon plasma to the hadronic matter transition. We find that the double phi peak structure still exists in the dilepton spectrum and thus remains a viable signal for the formation of the quark-gluon plasma in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.Comment: 8 pages, 9 uuencoded postscript figures included, Latex, LBL-3572

    Network Latency Adaptive Tempo in the Public Sound Objects System

    In recent years Computer Network-Music has increasingly captured the attention of the Computer Music Community. With the advent of Internet communication, geographical displacement amongst the participants of a computer mediated music performance achieved world wide extension. However, when established over long distance networks, this form of musical communication has a fundamental problem: network latency (or net-delay) is an impediment for real-time collaboration. From a recent study, carried out by the authors, a relation between network latency tolerance and Music Tempo was established. This result emerged from an experiment, in which simulated network latency conditions were applied to the performance of different musicians playing jazz standard tunes. The Public Sound Objects (PSOs) project is web-based shared musical space, which has been an experimental framework to implement and test different approaches for on-line music communication. This paper describe features implemented in the latest version of the PSOs system, including the notion of a network-music instrument incorporating latency as a software function, by dynamically adapting its tempo to the communication delay measured in real-time

    Low-energy electronic properties of clean CaRuO3_3: elusive Landau quasiparticles

    We have prepared high-quality epitaxial thin films of CaRuO3_3 with residual resistivity ratios up to 55. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the magnetoresistance and a T2T^2 temperature dependence in the electrical resistivity only below 1.5 K, whose coefficient is substantially suppressed in large magnetic fields, establish CaRuO3_3 as a Fermi liquid (FL) with anomalously low coherence scale. Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) T3/2T^{3/2} dependence is found between 2 and 25 K. The high sample quality allows access to the intrinsic electronic properties via THz spectroscopy. For frequencies below 0.6 THz, the conductivity is Drude-like and can be modeled by FL concepts, while for higher frequencies non-Drude behavior, inconsistent with FL predictions, is found. This establishes CaRuO3_3 as a prime example of optical NFL behavior in the THz range.Comment: 12 pages, 21 figures including supplemental materia

    X-ray Detection of the Primary Lens Galaxy Cluster of the Gravitational Lens System Q0957+561

    Analysis of several recent ROSAT HRI observations of the gravitationally lensed system Q0957+561 has led to the detection at the 3sigma level of the cluster lens containing the primary galaxy G1. The total mass was estimated by applying the equation of hydrostatic equilibrium to the detected hot intracluster gas for a range of cluster core radii, cluster sizes and for different values of the Hubble constant. X-ray estimates of the lensing cluster mass provide a means to determine the cluster contribution to the deflection of rays originating from the quasar Q0957+561. The present mass estimates were used to evaluate the convergence parameter kappa, the ratio of the local surface mass density of the cluster to the critical surface mass density for lensing. The convergence parameter, kappa, calculated in the vicinity of the lensed images, was found to range between 0.07 and 0.21, depending on the assumed cluster core radius and cluster extent. This range of uncertainty in kappa does not include possible systematic errors arising from the estimation of the cluster temperature through the use of the cluster luminosity-temperature relation and the assumption of spherical symmetry of the cluster gas. Applying this range of values of kappa to the lensing model of Grogin & Narayan (1996) for Q0957+561 but not accounting for uncertainties in that model yields a range of values for the Hubble constant:67<H_0<82 km s^-1 Mpc^-1, for a time delay of 1.1 years.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 25 pages, 9 figure

    Inclusive Particle Spectra at RHIC

    A simulation is performed of the recently reported data from PHOBOS at energies of 56 and 130 A GeV using the relativistic heavy ion cascade LUCIFER which had previously given a good description of the NA49 inclusive spectra at E=17.2 A GeV.
