Desarrollo académico infantil: donde la evolución se encuentra con la cultura

Schools are the interface between evolution and culture. They are the contexts in which children’s evolved learning and motivational biases intersect with the need to learn the vast array of evolutionarily-novel skills (e.g., reading) and knowledge (e.g., geometric concepts) needed to function as adults in modern societies. The rapid cross-generational accumulation of knowledge during the past several millennia has created a gap between children’s evolved learning and motivational biases and the types of learning needed to master evolutionarily-novel skills and knowledge. I provide a brief overview of these evolved learning and motivational biases, and place them in the context of children’s learning and motivation to learn in modern-day schools. Key words: evolution, development, cognitive development, academic learning.

The Irish Woollen and Worsted Industry, 1946-59 : A Study in Statistical Method. ESRI General Research Series Paper No. 7, July 1962

    Get PDF
The object of the present paper is to analyse in some detail the extensive statistical data provided in the annual Censuses of Industrial Production (CIP) conducted annually by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The Woollen and Worsted industry (hereinafter the "Industry") has been selected because, as compared with most other industries, it is relatively homogeneous in products and materials. The author has no special knowledge of the Industry’s problems except that which emerges from a study of the statistics. It is hoped that this paper will bring these problems into sharper focus and thus contribute something to their solution; and if this pilot effort be deemed successful in whole or in part the methods used could be extended to other industries

Quarterly Non-Agricultural Stock Statistics: A Pilot Inquiry. Quarterly Economic Commentary, January 1973

Annual statistics of changes in stocks of commodities, as an important element in national income accounts, have been available in Ireland for many years. The object of the present pilot inquiry is to ascertain if these statistics could be obtained at intervals more frequent than once a year. The test period selected was the calendar quarter, specifically dates at or near 31 December 1971 and 31 March 1972

One of the episodes in a long lifetime in statistics which, on recoiiection,,gives the writer most satisfaction was a forthright attack he delivered many years ago at ~a~Dublin Rotary Club Luncheon on Opini0n-type polls. The immediate provocation was a banner headline in a newspaper "XY Poll Does It Again"m in a UK general election. The argument ran that as XY prophesied that Labour would poll 49 per cent of the votes when the actual poll turned out to be 5o per cent (both figures imaginary) this represented an error of"only .I p e,rcent ."~ It was easy to point out the falsityof this claim: no one in his senses.wouldhave anticipated Labour’s polling as much as 55 per cent. oras little as 45 per cent~ a range of io per cent (and it might be less). The ;’i per cent error" should be related to this io per cent (or less) giving a real error of io per cent (or more), seriously raising the question of whether the XY poll had any value at all

Population Growth and Other Statistics of Middle-sized Irish Towns. General Research Series Paper No. 85, April 1976

    Get PDF
The basic aim of the study is the presentation of tables of comparative statistical data relating to 97 towns with population 5OO-1O,OOO in 1971 and analyses of such data. The exclusion of the four County Boroughs and Dun Laoghaire together with twelve other large towns and all small towns and villages, was to impart a degree of homogeneity to the inquiry, as regards function of town. The 97 towns range from Mullingar, the largest with a population of 9,245 to Cootehill with 1,542

Sexual Selection and the Evolution of Human Sex Differences

Darwin’s (1871) theory of sexual selection and the associated mechanisms of intrasexual competition (e.g., male-male competition) and intersexual choice (e.g., female choice of mates) have guided the scientific study of sex differences in hundreds of non-human species. These mechanisms and several recent advances in our understanding of the evolution and expression of sex differences in non-human species are described. The usefulness of this theory for approaching the study human sex differences is illustrated with discussion of patterns of women’s mate preferences and choices and with discussion of men’s one-on-one and coalitional competition. A comparison of these aspects of intersexual choice and intrasexual competition in humans and non-human species is provided, as is discussion of cultural variation in the expression of these behaviors. cultural influences (Maccoby & Jacklin, 1974)

C-DIFFERENTIALS AND GENERALIZED CRYPTOGRAPHIC PROPERTIES OF VECTORIAL BOOLEAN AND P-ARY FUNCTIONS

This dissertation investigates a newly defined cryptographic differential, called a c-differential, and its relevance to the nonlinear substitution boxes of modern symmetric block ciphers. We generalize the notions of perfect nonlinearity, bentness, and avalanche characteristics of vectorial Boolean and p-ary functions using the c-derivative and a new autocorrelation function, while capturing the original definitions as special cases (i.e., when c=1). We investigate the c-differential uniformity property of the inverse function over finite fields under several extended affine transformations. We demonstrate that c-differential properties do not hold in general across equivalence classes typically used in Boolean function analysis, and in some cases change significantly under slight perturbations. Thus, choosing certain affine equivalent functions that are easy to implement in hardware or software without checking their c-differential properties could potentially expose an encryption scheme to risk if a c-differential attack method is ever realized. We also extend the c-derivative and c-differential uniformity into higher order, investigate some of their properties, and analyze the behavior of the inverse function's second order c-differential uniformity. Finally, we analyze the substitution boxes of some recognizable ciphers along with certain extended affine equivalent variations and document their performance under c-differential uniformity.Commander, United States NavyApproved for public release.
