    In every country prices have risen sUbstantiaUy since the end of the war. In Ireland, as in six other European countries, consumer prices had almost doubled between 1948 and 1965--see Table 2. Is this situation of continuously rising prices in the indefinite future a fact of life which must be accepted and with which we must somehow cope, or does it mean that a sudden, and possibly catastrophic, fall in prices, like that of May 192o after World War I, is to be anticipated? History generally has a way of repeating itself and similarities are observable between our times and others, but with much longer time-lags between cause and effect in the more recent period. One might hope that, as governments nowadays have much greater control of their economies than in the past, and with the development of the social conscience, disastrous price falls can be avoided or mitigated.     The fate of an endothelium layer after preconditioning

    BackgroundA strategy in minimizing thrombotic events of vascular constructs is to seed the luminal surface with autologous endothelial cells (ECs). The task of seeding ECs can be achieved via bioreactors, which induce mechanical forces (shear stress, strain, pressure) onto the ECs. Although bioreactors can achieve a confluent layer of ECs in vitro, their acute response to blood remains unclear. Moreover, the necessary mechanical conditions that will increase EC adhesion and function remain unclear. We hypothesize that preconditioning seeded endothelium under physiological flow will enhance their retention and function.ObjectiveTo determine the role of varying preconditioning protocols on seeded ECs in vitro and in vivo.MethodsScaffolds derived from decelluarized arteries seeded with autologous ECs were preconditioned for 9 days. Three specific protocols, low steady shear stress (SS), high SS, and cyclic SS were investigated. After preconditioning, the seeded grafts were exposed to 15 minutes of blood via an ex vivo arteriovenous shunt model or alternately an in vivo arteriovenous bypass graft model.ResultsThe shunt model demonstrated ECs remained intact for all conditions. In the arteriovenous bypass model, only the cyclic preconditioned grafts remained intact, maintained morphology, and resisted the attachment of circulating blood elements such as platelets, red blood cells, and leukocytes. Western blotting analysis demonstrated an increase in the protein expression of eNOS and prostaglandin I synthase for the cyclic high shear stress-conditioned cells relative to cells conditioned with high shear stress alone.ConclusionCyclic preconditioning has been shown here to increase the ECs ability to resist blood flow-induced shear stress and the attachment of circulating blood elements, key attributes in minimizing thrombotic events. These studies may ultimately establish protocols for the formation of a more durable endothelial monolayer that may be useful in the context of small vessel arterial reconstruction.Clinical RelevanceThe importance of ECs toward patency has been demonstrated by the superior performance of endothelialized vein compared with prosthetic vascular graft materials. This article evaluates conditioning protocols for bioengineered vascular conduits to improve endothelial retention. This study describes approaches to improve bioengineered vessels as a potential alternative to conventional prosthetic vascular grafts

    A Merger Scenario for the Dynamics of Abell 665

    We present new redshift measurements for 55 galaxies in the vicinity of the rich galaxy cluster Abell 665. When combined with results from the literature, we have good velocity measurements for a sample of 77 confirmed cluster members from which we derive the cluster's redshift z=0.1829 +/- 0.0005 and line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 1390 +/- 120 km/s. Our analysis of the kinematical and spatial data for the subset of galaxies located within the central 750 kpc reveals only subtle evidence for substructure and non-Gaussianity in the velocity distribution. We find that the brightest cluster member is not moving significantly relative to the other galaxies near the center of the cluster. On the other hand, our deep ROSAT high resolution image of A665 shows strong evidence for isophotal twisting and centroid variation, thereby confirming previous suggestions of significant substructure in the hot X-ray--emitting intracluster gas. In light of this evident substructure, we have compared the optical velocity data with N-body simulations of head-on cluster mergers. We find that a merger of two similar mass subclusters (mass ratios of 1:1 or 1:2) seen close to the time of core-crossing produces velocity distributions that are consistent with that observed.Comment: 30 pages and 7 figures.     Sex differences in mathematics and reading achievement are inversely related: within- and across-nation assessment of 10 years of PISA data

    We analyzed one decade of data collected by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), including the mathematics and reading performance of nearly 1.5 million 15 year olds in 75 countries. Across nations, boys scored higher than girls in mathematics, but lower than girls in reading. The sex difference in reading was three times as large as in mathematics. There was considerable variation in the extent of the sex differences between nations. There are countries without a sex difference in mathematics performance, and in some countries girls scored higher than boys. Boys scored lower in reading in all nations in all four PISA assessments (2000, 2003, 2006, 2009). Contrary to several previous studies, we found no evidence that the sex differences were related to nations’ gender equality indicators. Further, paradoxically, sex differences in mathematics were consistently and strongly inversely correlated with sex differences in reading: Countries with a smaller sex difference in mathematics had a larger sex difference in reading and vice versa. We demonstrate that this was not merely a between-nation, but also a within-nation effect. This effect is related to relative changes in these sex differences across the performance continuum: We did not find a sex difference in mathematics among the lowest performing students, but this is where the sex difference in reading was largest. In contrast, the sex difference in mathematics was largest among the higher performing students, and this is where the sex difference in reading was smallest. The implication is that if policy makers decide that changes in these sex differences are desired, different approaches will be needed to achieve this for reading and mathematics. Interventions that focus on high-achieving girls in mathematics and on low achieving boys in reading are likely to yield the strongest educational benefits

    A quantitative assessment of shoot flammability for 60 tree and shrub species supports rankings based on expert opinion

    Fire is an important ecological disturbance in vegetated ecosystems across the globe, and also has considerable impacts on human infrastructure. Vegetation flammability is a key bottom-up control on fire regimes, and on the nature of individual fires. Although New Zealand (NZ) historically had low fire frequencies, anthropogenic fires have considerably impacted indigenous vegetation as humans used fire extensively to clear forests. Few studies of vegetation flammability have been undertaken in NZ, and only one has compared the flammability of indigenous plants; this was a qualitative assessment derived from expert opinion. We addressed this knowledge gap by measuring the flammability of terminal shoots from a range of trees and shrubs found in NZ. We quantified shoot flammability of 60 indigenous and exotic species, and compared our experimentally derived ranking with expert opinion. The most flammable species was the invasive exotic shrub Ulex europaeus, followed by Eucalyptus viminalis, Pomaderris kumeraho, Dacrydium cupressinum, and Lophozonia menziesii. Our experimentally derived ranking was strongly correlated with expert opinion, lending support to both methods. Our results are useful to ecologists seeking to understand how fires have and will influence NZ’s ecosystems, and for fire managers identifying high-risk landscapes, and low flammability species for ‘green firebreaks’

    Neonatal ureteral obstruction stimulates recruitment of renin-secreting renal cortical cells. Unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in the neonate increases ipsilateral renal renin gene expression, an effect which is mediated by renal nerves. To determine whether neonatal UUO alters the number of renal cortical cells secreting renin and whether this change is modulated by renal nerve activity, newborn Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to left UUO, right uninephrectomy, or sham operation and studied four weeks thereafter. To evaluate the importance of renal nerves in this response, an additional group of animals underwent chemical sympathectomy with guanethidine. Ureteral obstruction was associated with marked reduction in renal mass in the obstructed kidney and contralateral compensatory hypertrophy, changes which were not altered by sympathectomy. Renin messenger RNA and renal renin content were elevated in the obstructed kidney. The number of cells secreting renin, measured by the reverse hemolytic plaque assay, was markedly increased in the obstructed kidney (45 ± 18 plaques/slide vs. 11 ± 1 plaques/slide in sham animals), but not in the opposite kidney or following uninephrectomy. This effect was not significantly altered by sympathectomy. There was no change in the amount of renin secreted per cell or in the secretory response to Ca++. These results show that UUO results in recruitment of cells not previously secreting renin by a mechanism independent of renal nerve activity. This recruitment occurs without alteration of the quantity of renin secreted per cell or in the normal regulatory effect of Ca++ on renin secretion. An increase in the number of renin-secreting cells may contribute to the activation of the renin-angiotensin system, and thus to the vasoconstriction observed following ureteral obstruction
