Search for Free Decay of Negative Pions in Water and Light Materials
We report on a search for the free decay component of pi- stopped in water
and light materials. A non-zero value of this would be an indication of
anomalous nu_e contamination to the nu_e and nu_mu_bar production at
stopped-pion neutrino facilities. No free decay component of pi- was observed
in water, Beryllium, and Aluminum, for which upper limits were established at
8.2E-4, 3.2E-3, and 7.7E-3, respectively
Spectra of supernovae in the nebular phase
When supernovae enter the nebular phase after a few months, they reveal
spectral fingerprints of their deep interiors, glowing by radioactivity
produced in the explosion. We are given a unique opportunity to see what an
exploded star looks like inside. The line profiles and luminosities encode
information about physical conditions, explosive and hydrostatic
nucleosynthesis, and ejecta morphology, which link to the progenitor properties
and the explosion mechanism. Here, the fundamental properties of spectral
formation of supernovae in the nebular phase are reviewed. The formalism
between ejecta morphology and line profile shapes is derived, including effects
of scattering and absorption. Line luminosity expressions are derived in
various physical limits, with examples of applications from the literature. The
physical processes at work in the supernova ejecta, including gamma-ray
deposition, non-thermal electron degradation, ionization and excitation, and
radiative transfer are described and linked to the computation and application
of advanced spectral models. Some of the results derived so far from
nebular-phase supernova analysis are discussed.Comment: Book chapter for 'Handbook of Supernovae,' edited by Alsabti and

Inclusive Electron Scattering from Nuclei at
The inclusive A(e,e') cross section for was measured on H,
C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers from 1-7 (GeV/c). The scaling
behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y-scaling to
x-scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit -scaling,
reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX; 4 figures (postscript in .tar.Z file
Measurement of the Proton and Deuteron Spin Structure Functions g2 and Asymmetry A2
We have measured the spin structure functions g2p and g2d and the virtual
photon asymmetries A2p and A2d over the kinematic range 0.02 < x < 0.8 and 1.0
< Q^2 < 30(GeV/c)^2 by scattering 38.8 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons
from transversely polarized NH3 and 6LiD targets. The absolute value of A2 is
significantly smaller than the sqrt{R} positivity limit over the measured
range, while g2 is consistent with the twist-2 Wandzura-Wilczek calculation. We
obtain results for the twist-3 reduced matrix elements d2p, d2d and d2n. The
Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule integral - int(g2(x)dx) is reported for the range
0.02 < x < 0.8.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
Measurement of the Proton and Deuteron Spin Structure Function g_1 in the Resonance Region
We have measured the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g_1^p and
g_1^d in the region of the nucleon resonances for W^2 < 5 GeV^2 and and GeV^2 by inelastically scattering 9.7 GeV polarized
electrons off polarized and targets. We observe
significant structure in g_1^p in the resonance region. We have used the
present results, together with the deep-inelastic data at higher W^2, to
extract . This is the first
information on the low-Q^2 evolution of Gamma toward the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn
limit at Q^2 = 0.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
Measurements of the -Dependence of the Proton and Neutron Spin Structure Functions g1p and g1n
The structure functions g1p and g1n have been measured over the range 0.014 <
x < 0.9 and 1 < Q2 < 40 GeV2 using deep-inelastic scattering of 48 GeV
longitudinally polarized electrons from polarized protons and deuterons. We
find that the Q2 dependence of g1p (g1n) at fixed x is very similar to that of
the spin-averaged structure function F1p (F1n). From a NLO QCD fit to all
available data we find at
Q2=5 GeV2, in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule prediction of 0.182 \pm
0.005.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Physics Letters
Precision Determination of the Neutron Spin Structure Function g1n
We report on a precision measurement of the neutron spin structure function
using deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by polarized
^3He. For the kinematic range 0.014<x<0.7 and 1 (GeV/c)^2< Q^2< 17 (GeV/c)^2,
we obtain at an average . We find relatively large negative
values for at low . The results call into question the usual Regge
theory method for extrapolating to x=0 to find the full neutron integral
, needed for testing quark-parton model and QCD sum rules.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures To be published in Phys. Rev. Let

arrayMap: A Reference Resource for Genomic Copy Number Imbalances in Human Malignancies
Background: The delineation of genomic copy number abnormalities (CNAs) from
cancer samples has been instrumental for identification of tumor suppressor
genes and oncogenes and proven useful for clinical marker detection. An
increasing number of projects have mapped CNAs using high-resolution microarray
based techniques. So far, no single resource does provide a global collection
of readily accessible oncoge- nomic array data.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We here present arrayMap, a curated reference
database and bioinformatics resource targeting copy number profiling data in
human cancer. The arrayMap database provides a platform for meta-analysis and
systems level data integration of high-resolution oncogenomic CNA data. To
date, the resource incorporates more than 40,000 arrays in 224 cancer types
extracted from several resources, including the NCBI's Gene Expression Omnibus
(GEO), EBIs ArrayExpress (AE), The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), publication
supplements and direct submissions. For the majority of the included datasets,
probe level and integrated visualization facilitate gene level and genome wide
data re- view. Results from multi-case selections can be connected to
downstream data analysis and visualization tools.
Conclusions/Significance: To our knowledge, currently no data source provides
an extensive collection of high resolution oncogenomic CNA data which readily
could be used for genomic feature mining, across a representative range of
cancer entities. arrayMap represents our effort for providing a long term
platform for oncogenomic CNA data independent of specific platform
considerations or specific project dependence. The online database can be
accessed at http://www.arraymap.org.Comment: 17 pages, 5 inline figures, 3 tables, supplementary figures/tables

Precision measurement of the deuteron spin structure function
We report on a high-statistics measurement of the deuteron spin structure function g[sup d][sub 1] at a beam energy of 29 GeV in the kinematic range 0.029 < x < 0.8 and 1 < Q2 < 10 (GeV/c)2. The integral Gamma [sup d][sub 1] = (integral)[sup 1][sub 0]g[sup d][sub 1]dx evaluated at fixed Q2 = 3 (GeV/c)2 gives 0.042 ± 0.003(stat) ± 0.004(syst). Combining this result with our earlier measurement of g[sup p][sub 1], we find Gamma [sup p][sub 1]- Gamma [sup n][sub 1] = 0.163 ± 0.010(stat) ± 0.016(syst), which agrees with the prediction of the Bjorken sum rule with O( alpha [sup 3][sub s]) corrections, Gamma [sup p][sub 1]- Gamma [sup n][sub 1] = 0.171 ± 0.008. We find the quark contribution to the proton helicity to be Delta q = 0.30 ± 0.06
