The inclusion of electrospun nanofiber veils was revealed as an effective method for enhancing the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites. These veils will eventually allow the incorporation of nanomaterials not only for mechanical reinforcement but also in multifunctional applications. Therefore, this paper investigates the effect of electrospun nanofibrous veils made of polyamide 6 modified with TiO2 nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of a carbon-fiber/epoxy composite. The nanofibers were included in the carbon-fiber/epoxy composite as a single structure. The effect of positioning these veils in different composite positions was investigated. Compared to the reference, the use of unmodified and TiO2 modified veils increased the flexural stress at failure and the fracture toughness of composites. When TiO2 modified veils were incorporated, new antibacterial properties were achieved due to the photocatalytic properties of the veils, widening the application area of these composites. This research is funded by the ELKARTEK Programme, “ACTIMAT”, grupos de investigación del sistema universitario vasco (IT718-13), the Spanish government through the project TEC2015-63838-C3-1-R-OPTONANOSENS and from the Basque government through the project KK-2017/00089-µ4F

AbstractMatched unrelated donor (MUD) transplantation is the first alternative in the absence of a matched sibling donor. For patients without a suitable adult donor, we have adopted the dual stem cell transplantation protocol consisting of cord blood (CB) in combination with CD34+ cells from a third party HLA-mismatched donor. We analyzed the outcomes of patients undergoing both procedures in a single center. Starting in 2004, a total of 20 patients with high-risk disease underwent 22 dual transplants and 25 patients underwent myeloablative MUD transplantation. The 30-day cumulative incidence of neutrophil engraftment was similar in both groups (91% and 95%), with a median time to engraftment of 14 and 16 days, respectively. Grade II-IV acute graft-versus-host disease was more frequent in the MUD group (40% versus 5%). Except for a tendency toward a higher incidence of viral hemorrhagic cystitis in the dual transplantation group, posttransplantation infectious events were comparable in the 2 groups. The 3-year cumulative incidence rates of relapse (41% versus 44%) and nonrelapse mortality (30% versus 25%) were similar in the MUD and dual transplantation cohorts. Estimated 3-year overall survival and disease-free survival were 47% and 41%, respectively, with no survival advantage for either group. In our experience, dual transplantation offers survival rates comparable to those from myeloablative MUD transplantation with similar nonrelapse mortality rates

A Low Complexity Sum-Subtract Decoding Algorithm for Non-Binary LDPC Codes over GF(q)

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a low complexity Sum-Subtract decoder for non-binary LDPC codes defined over GF(q). The performance of this decoding algorithm is similar to that of the Fast Fourier Transform Sum-Product algorithm usually utilized for decoding non-binary LDPC codes. It is a simplified algorithm that can be easily implemented on programmable logic technology such as FPGA devices because of its use of only additions and subtractions, avoiding the use of quotients and products, and of float point arithmetic. The algorithm yields a very low complexity programmable logic implementation of an NB-LDPC decoder with an excellent BER performance.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ

Plan de negocio para la implementación de un centro de lavado de automóviles tipo autoservicio en la ciudad de Trujillo

    Get PDF

Evaluation of Minimal Residual Disease by Real-Time Quantitative PCR of Wilms’ Tumor 1 Expression in Patients with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia after Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation: Correlation with Flow Cytometry and Chimerism

    Get PDF
Relapse remains the main cause of treatment failure in patients with acute myelogeous leukemia (AML) after allogeneic hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT). The Wilms’ tumor 1 gene (WT1) is reportedly overexpressed in >90% of patients with AML and thus can be useful for minimal residual disease (MRD) monitoring. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of WT1 expression as a relapse predictor marker in patients with AML after SCT and compare it with flow cytometry (FC) and chimerism studies. WT1 expression was assessed retrospectively using quantitative RT-PCR in bone marrow and peripheral blood from 21 patients. Patients were classified according to WT1 dynamics posttransplantation. Eleven of the 21 patients had low and stable WT1 levels. All of these 11 patients showed complete chimerism and negative MRD by FC and remained in complete remission with a median follow-up of 27 months (range, 18-98 months). In contrast, 10 of 21 patients showed WT1 overexpression after SCT, and 9 of these 10 patients relapsed. The incidence of relapse differed significantly between the 2 groups of patients according to WT1 expression post-SCT (P = .00003). Relapse in the 9 patients occurred at a median of 314 days (range, 50-560 days). Interestingly, in these patients, relapse was first predicted by WT1 (with negative FC and complete chimerism) in 7 patients. WT1 overexpression was correlated with disease burden in patients with AML before and after allogeneic SCT. In patients who relapsed, both medullary and extramedullary relapse were better anticipated by WT1 overexpression compared with FC and chimerism

Understanding informal jewellery apprenticeship in Ghana: Nature, processes and challanges

    Get PDF
Context: The processes of acquiring education in jewellery in Ghana has been dominated by the informal apprenticeship system and it forms the backbone of the workforce of the jewellery industry in Ghana. However, the patronage of informal jewellery apprenticeship in Ghana in recent times has been on decline even though it has the potential of training human resources to transform Ghana’s precious mineral resources sector. This is based on the belief that jewellery trade and its training are shrouded in secrecy, in other words, the jewellery trade is considered to be a sacred profession where information on its operating systems are not allowed to be shared easily. It is believed to be associated with cult and magic, hence the reluctant to admit people who are from outside the family of particular jewellery enterprise. This study is sought to bring to fore the understanding nature, processes and challenges of the informal jewellery apprenticeship in Ghana. Approach: The study adopted the descriptive and phenomenology research designs (qualitative research methods). Jewellers who own a jewellery business and who are training other people through apprenticeships as well as people who are trained are observed and interviewed. A sample size was selected through purposive and convenience sampling techniques from four jewellery enterprises in Accra, Ghana. A thematic analysis plan was adopted to generate fndings of the study. Findings: The results show that for a person to train as a jeweller, s/he has to enrol by going through induction, futhremore fees (money and perishable items) are to be paid. The training content is driven by orders received by the master jeweller, thereby making it unstructured and lacking criteria for assessing the performance and progress of apprentice jewellers. Teaching and learning methods are usually on-the-job training that rely on demonstrations and observation. Conclusion: Informal jewellery apprenticeship in Ghana uses a fexible, cost-efective approach for transferring jewellery making skills from masters to apprentice jewellers, and it has substantial potential for improving skills training in the country. Sometimes the reluctant of some jeweller to train others is to keep the trade to family members only
